Visualping API: How to Create Website Monitors and Get Screenshot Change Alerts

Create Visualping monitors with the API, tune what they check, and use webhooks to deliver screenshot and change details to your application.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Visualping’s API to create and manage website monitors, then configure a webhook to push screenshot and change details to your application when a change is detected. The API sets up and manages monitoring; the webhook is the documented way to deliver a change event and its data to another service.

What the Visualping API does—and how it differs from a webhook

Visualping describes its API as a way to integrate monitoring into applications and workflows. It supports creating, updating, and deleting monitors, retrieving changes, and automating actions based on website changes. The API reference documents monitor operations; a webhook delivers a change event to an endpoint you control or to a supported automation service.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters: creating a monitor does not itself send a screenshot to your app. Configure a notification route, such as a webhook, to receive change data when Visualping detects an event. See the Visualping API reference and the webhook setup guide.

Get an API key and authenticate requests

  1. In Visualping, open Developer settings and create an API key. For a Business account, only an Admin can access Developer settings; ask an Admin to create a key or grant the needed role if you are a Viewer or Editor.
  2. Choose the narrowest sufficient scope. Keys can be scoped to an organization or workspace and assigned Read or Write access. Start with workspace scope and Read access where that is enough; creating monitors requires Write capability.
  3. Copy and securely store the key when it is created. Visualping shows it only once, and the help page states a maximum of five API keys per organization.
  4. Send the key as a Bearer token in the Authorization header for each request. Do not put it in the URL, where query strings may be logged or exposed by intermediaries.

For example, an authenticated request uses this header shape: Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. The API reference also describes email/password ID-token and refresh-token flows; use its current instructions if you need those alternatives, and protect those credentials as carefully as an API key.

Create a website monitor

The documented create-monitor endpoint is POST https://job.api.visualping.io/v2/jobs. The example below shows the request shape without claiming a particular response. Replace the URL and placeholder key, and include a workspaceId for a Business account.

curl -X POST "https://job.api.visualping.io/v2/jobs"
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{
    "url": "https://example.com/pricing",
    "description": "Watch pricing page",
    "mode": "VISUAL",
    "active": true,
    "interval": "60"
  }'

Use the field names and accepted values in the current API reference for your account and configuration. The reference lists these options as part of monitor creation:

  • url: the page to monitor; this is required.
  • description: a human-readable label for the monitor.
  • mode: VISUAL, WEB, TEXT, or ALL, according to which kinds of changes you want to monitor.
  • active: whether the monitor is active.
  • interval: the check frequency in minutes, expressed as a string. The listed default is 1440 minutes (once a day); documented examples include 5, 15, 30, 60, 360, 720, and 1440. Confirm which values are available for your account in the current reference.
  • Scope: monitor the full page or use crop coordinates, an XPath, or a CSS selector to focus on a region or element.
  • Before-check actions: configure supported preactions such as clicking or typing when the page must be prepared before it can be monitored.
  • Other configuration: the reference also lists triggers, keywords, schedules, notification settings, retention, and summary configuration.

Visualping supports monitoring visual, text, or code changes, and its product guidance describes monitoring either an entire page or a selected element. Choose capture scope based on what matters: a selector or crop can reduce noise from unrelated page changes, while full-page monitoring catches changes outside a narrowly selected area.

Choose a change trigger and check frequency

Set the interval according to how quickly you need to know about a change and how much checking your workflow requires. The API reference’s listed default is once per day; shorter intervals are also documented, but available settings may depend on the account. A very sensitive trigger or frequent checks can produce more alerts, so tune both against the importance of the page and the amount of noise you can handle.

Visualping’s trigger guide, edited January 30, 2025, lists these notification thresholds:

Trigger Documented threshold
Any Change Any detected change
Tiny Over 1%
Medium Over 10%
Major Over 25%
Gigantic Over 50%

These are Visualping’s published trigger categories, not guarantees of accuracy or universal thresholds for every monitoring mode. Select the trigger that suits your use case, then assess the events your workflow receives.

Deliver screenshot and change data with a webhook

To have change results pushed to an application, set up a webhook from the monitor’s Notifications settings. The help guide edited September 30, 2026 describes this setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Get a receiving endpoint URL from your application or automation platform.
  2. Open the monitor’s Notifications settings and choose Webhook.
  3. Enter the endpoint URL and use Test to send a sample payload; confirm the receiving service accepts it.

Visualping names Zapier, n8n, Microsoft Power Automate, Make, Integrately, and Workato as webhook destinations. It also describes formats for Slack, Teams, Discord, and Google Chat. Your receiving system should handle the event as JSON and should not assume every optional field will be present.

What a change payload can contain

The documented payload schema includes the page URL, job identifiers, UTC detection time, links to original and current screenshots, a visual preview, prior and current HTML snapshots, the visual change percentage, added and removed text, and a dashboard link. Some values depend on monitor settings or event conditions. Labels, PDF download links, AI importance, extracted data, and error details are examples of conditional fields.

In particular, extracted_data is not a general feature guaranteed on every plan: the guide says custom data extraction requires a Solutions plan and support configuration. Build your consumer to tolerate absent optional fields, and use the webhook guide’s schema for the fields relevant to your workflow.

List monitors and retrieve changes

The API reference documents GET https://job.api.visualping.io/v2/jobs for listing jobs. Its filters include active state, monitoring mode, frequency, event, date, URL or description search, and labels. The help overview confirms that the API can also update and delete monitors and retrieve changes, but do not assume endpoint paths or request shapes for those operations from the create/list examples here: consult the current reference for the exact operation you need.

Security, rate limits, and operational cautions

  • Keep credentials out of client-side code and logs. Use a server-side secret store and rotate access through Visualping’s key management if a key is exposed.
  • Use least privilege. A read-only key is not sufficient to create monitors; use Write access only for workflows that need it.
  • Do not extrapolate a rate limit. The public reference specifies 200 requests per rolling one-minute window for GET https://job.api.visualping.io/v2/jobs/get-diff. It does not establish that same limit for every endpoint. It says unlisted endpoints have no fixed published limit, while sustained abusive volume may still be restricted.
  • Check the current reference before relying on endpoint details. The reviewed public reference is on the develop branch and does not establish a numbered API version or a general stability guarantee.
  • Design for conditional data and delayed events. Treat the webhook schema as a set of available fields rather than assuming every notification contains every screenshot, extraction, or diagnostic value.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

  • Monitor creation is rejected: confirm the key has Write capability, the request uses the documented endpoint and JSON fields, and Business-account requests include workspaceId.
  • Authentication fails: check that the key is valid, the header is exactly Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY, and the key has not been exposed or revoked. Do not move it into a query parameter.
  • No webhook arrives: verify the monitor’s Notifications setting points to the intended endpoint, use the guide’s Test action, and check the receiving service’s request logs and JSON handling.
  • A field is missing from a payload: optional fields are conditional. Confirm the associated feature is configured; custom extracted data, for example, requires Solutions-plan access and support configuration.
  • Too many or too few notifications: adjust the trigger threshold, monitored mode, capture scope, or check interval to match the changes that matter. Percentage categories are notification thresholds, not accuracy guarantees.
  • A request is throttled: if you are calling the documented diff endpoint, respect its published rolling-window limit. Do not assume that figure applies to unrelated endpoints; check the current reference for applicable guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot directly rather than a Visualping change-monitor workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: its API removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; consult the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get a screenshot when a website changes?

Create a Visualping monitor, configure a webhook in its Notifications settings, and have your endpoint process the change event’s screenshot links and other available fields.

Can I use a read-only Visualping API key to create a monitor?

No. The create-monitor operation requires Write capability; use a key with the necessary permission.
