How to Monitor Domain Availability: Expiration Alerts and RDAP Checks

To monitor a domain you already own, track its expiration date, keep your registrar contact and payment details current, and use renewal reminders or auto-renewal. To watch a name you want, check its registration data through ICANN’s RDAP lookup or automate repeat checks with ICANN’s open-source command-line RDAP client. An expired domain is not necessarily available to register immediately.

How do I monitor domain availability?

First decide which situation you mean: protecting a domain you own from accidental expiration, or watching a name that someone else has registered. The first calls for renewal safeguards; the second calls for checking changes in registration data and understanding the release process.

RDAP is the current primary registration-data protocol for gTLDs. From 28 January 2025, gTLD registries and registrars must provide RDAP under the gTLD RDAP Profile; they are generally no longer required to provide WHOIS, with exceptions for .com, .name, and .post. ICANN Lookup can use RDAP and fall back to WHOIS if relevant RDAP information is unavailable. These details concern gTLDs; check the authoritative service for a country-code domain (ccTLD) rather than assuming coverage is identical. ICANN’s RDAP guidance describes the protocol and its role.

How can I get alerted before my domain expires?

  1. Find the registrar. Look up the domain using ICANN Lookup and note the registrar shown in its publicly available registration data. The ICANN Lookup client queries registry or registrar RDAP data in real time and may fall back to WHOIS when relevant RDAP data is unavailable.
  2. Record the expiration date. Keep it somewhere you will see it, and contact the registrar if you are unsure of the date or the account that controls the domain.
  3. Make registrar reminders deliverable. ICANN says registrars must send renewal reminders approximately one month and one week before expiration. Check that the registrar has a current email address and other contact details for you.
  4. Consider auto-renewal. Most registrars offer it. If you enable it, keep the payment method current and read the registrar’s terms, renewal price, and fee details; these vary by registrar.
  5. Use more than one safeguard if the domain matters. Registrar notices and auto-renewal depend on the account being reachable and payment working. A separate calendar reminder tied to the recorded expiration date can provide another prompt.

ICANN’s renewal and expiration FAQ covers reminders, auto-renewal, and the typical gTLD expiration process.

How do I check a name repeatedly with RDAP?

For a one-time check, use ICANN Lookup in a browser. For repeatable checks, ICANN also provides an open-source RDAP command-line client that can be scripted. The client is a way to query registration data; it does not itself establish a universal alert interval or guarantee that notifications will be delivered.

  1. Install and configure the RDAP client by following the instructions in ICANN’s RDAP resources.
  2. Run a lookup for each domain you want to watch, following the client’s command syntax and options.
  3. Save the result and compare it with the previous result. Decide which changes matter to you, such as a change in registration status or registrar information.
  4. Schedule the script at an interval appropriate to your needs, and send any change notification to a channel you monitor. Choose and test the schedule and notification method yourself; ICANN does not prescribe them.

RDAP responses expose registration data, not a promise that a name can be registered at that moment. A status change should prompt a fresh check with the relevant registrar or registry before you act.

When does an expired domain become available?

Expiration is a warning point, not a release time. In ICANN’s typical gTLD sequence, a deleted domain can be restored during a 30-day Redemption Grace Period. If it is not restored, it enters PendingDelete for five days; after that it is released first-come, first-served. The stated periods describe the typical gTLD lifecycle, not every TLD or registrar scenario. Registrar handling and terms can vary, so verify a specific name with its registrar and registry data. ICANN’s expiration FAQ explains the process.

For a name you want, keep checking its authoritative registration data rather than assuming that the listed expiration date is the date it will be released. Even after release, first-come, first-served means another person may register it before you do.

If you need a website screenshot as part of a separate monitoring workflow—for example, to capture how a page looks—ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API, not a domain-registration availability checker. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These screenshot features do not monitor domain registration or replace RDAP checks.
