What visual testing checks
A visual test captures a rendered page or component and compares it with a reference image, often called a baseline. A difference can reveal an unexpected layout shift, changed typography, a missing image, or another visible change even when a functional test still passes. Visual checks complement—not replace—tests of application behavior and accessibility.

The comparison is only useful when the captured state is intentional and repeatable. Content, animation, time-dependent elements, viewport size, browser rendering, and test data can all affect an image. Decide which differences matter and who can approve an updated baseline before relying on a failing comparison as evidence of a defect.

Playwright Test: built-in screenshot comparison
Playwright Test documents toHaveScreenshot() for capturing and comparing screenshots; its visual-comparison documentation identifies pixelmatch as the comparison library. This is a practical first option when Playwright is already part of your test suite and you want screenshot assertions in that flow. See the Playwright visual-comparison documentation for current setup and behavior.
#1 Best Overall
A basic test takes this form:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Use a representative, stable route and follow Playwright’s documentation for creating and updating baselines in your project. This framework-native workflow should not be assumed to provide the same hosted review or cross-browser service features as a specialist vendor.
Specialist services for a separate review workflow
Consider a dedicated service if your team needs a distinct visual review and approval process, or a particular integration or coverage model. These vendors describe different workflows; the official pages cited here do not establish a neutral head-to-head ranking or comparative performance result.

- Applitools Eyes: Applitools documents using Eyes with existing Playwright tests and describes visual checkpoints, Visual AI, dynamic-content handling, and cross-browser coverage as vendor capabilities. Evaluate those claims against your use case rather than treating them as independently benchmarked results. See Applitools web testing and its Playwright integration.
- Percy by BrowserStack: Percy’s official site describes its visual-testing service and supported SDK integrations, and identifies Percy as part of BrowserStack. Confirm the integrations and terms that apply to your project on Percy’s official site.
- Chromatic: Chromatic documents visual tests and a Playwright integration that extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities. Check the visual-test documentation and Playwright setup guide for the workflow relevant to your stack.
How to choose a tool
Compare tools against your actual test and review needs rather than feature lists alone. The relevant capabilities and limits can vary by product and plan; verify current details in the vendor documentation.

|---|---|
| Framework and CI | Does it fit the test framework and CI pipeline your team already runs? Can failures be investigated in the workflow developers use? |
| What you capture | Do you need full pages, individual components, or both? Which routes and states are important enough to baseline? |
| Browser and viewport coverage | Which browsers, viewport sizes, and devices must be represented? Confirm what the specific tool and plan support. |
| Rendering variation | How will dynamic content, animation, fonts, and other sources of changing pixels be controlled or handled? |
| Baseline review | How are diffs presented, who reviews them, and how are intentional changes approved? |
| Data handling | Where are screenshots and any test data processed, and does that meet your organization’s constraints? Confirm the vendor’s current terms and technical details. |
| Cost and limits | What are the current plan prices, usage limits, and coverage limits for the workflow you need? The cited materials do not establish comparable current pricing across these options. |
If you use Playwright and need assertions in your existing tests, evaluate Playwright’s screenshot comparison first. If you need a separate review service, shortlist specialist options based on the rows above and verify the integration, plan, and data-processing details directly with each provider.

Roll out visual checks without noisy diffs
- Pick representative routes or components. Begin with screens where visual regressions would matter to users; avoid trying to baseline every state at once.
- Make the captured state repeatable. Use controlled test data and consistent viewport and browser settings. Reduce avoidable changes from time-dependent content or animation where the chosen tool allows it.
- Establish an approved reference. Capture the intended appearance and agree on who can review and accept a changed baseline.
- Run checks in CI. Make the comparison part of the team’s normal test process, with enough context for someone to inspect a failure.
- Assign diff ownership. Decide who triages unexpected changes and who approves intentional design updates. A comparison without a review process can generate failures without resolving whether they are defects.
ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for capturing website screenshots
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a substitute for a visual-regression test suite or its baseline approval workflow. It can be useful when your process needs a clean screenshot capture endpoint: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s listed plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card, then $5 for 3,000 shots on Starter; every feature is available on every plan. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does visual testing replace functional testing?
No. It checks rendered appearance; functional tests check behavior. They catch different classes of problems.
Can I use visual testing with an existing Playwright suite?
Yes. Playwright Test documents built-in screenshot comparisons, and Applitools and Chromatic document Playwright integrations. Check each provider’s current setup instructions for your project.
