The exact Composer commands, PHP runtime, artifact paths, and deployment steps depend on your application and Bamboo release; Atlassian’s Data Center documentation does not provide a validated, end-to-end PHP recipe. Confirm those details against your environment before adopting a pipeline.
What the pipeline should do
Think of the pipeline as a sequence of responsibilities rather than a fixed PHP template:
- A change in the source repository triggers a Bamboo build plan.
- A Bamboo agent checks out the code and runs the PHP project’s required checks.
- The successful build makes the output needed for release available to a deployment plan.
- The deployment plan releases that output to the intended environment, automatically or after a human-controlled gate.
Atlassian describes the relationship from repository commit to build and deployment, but does not prescribe PHP packaging conventions or a universal command sequence. See Atlassian’s explanation of the commit-to-deployment relationship.
Confirm your Bamboo and PHP environment
Before configuring tasks, record the Bamboo edition and release, the operating system and type of each build agent, the PHP version required by the application, the project’s Composer constraints, and the deployment destination. The Atlassian documentation cited here is labeled Data Center only; it does not establish current PHP, Composer, and Bamboo compatibility as a single matrix.

- Check the PHP and Composer requirements declared by the project, and make sure the actual agent can run the required versions.
- Decide which checks must pass before release, such as dependency installation, tests, or other project-specific validation. Derive the commands from the application’s own scripts and configuration.
- Identify which files or packaged output the deployment process needs. Validate their paths and handling in the target environment instead of assuming a PHP artifact convention.
- Confirm the intended Bamboo task types, Specs support, and deployment behavior against the installed Bamboo release.
Prepare the Bamboo agent
The agent is the machine or execution environment that runs the plan’s work. PHP tooling must actually be installed or otherwise made available there; naming a capability in Bamboo does not install PHP, Composer, or PHPUnit.
Atlassian’s Data Center documentation describes remote-agent capabilities configured through bamboo-capabilities.properties and lists executable capabilities including PHPUnit, Docker, and Git. Treat these as declarations of available executables, then verify the executable path and version on the specific agent that will run the plan. The capability list is documented at Atlassian’s default Bamboo capabilities reference.

Create the build plan and run project checks
Connect the repository to a build plan, choose the appropriate trigger for changes, and add tasks that carry out the checks your project requires. Bamboo supports native build, test, and deployment tasks as well as script tasks for command-line work; plugins may also be relevant where an integration is needed. Atlassian’s Bamboo configuration options describes these approaches, but does not give a PHP-specific task recipe.
Choose how commands run
- Native task: Use a Bamboo task when it covers the operation and integration you need.
- Script task: Use a script task when project-specific command-line steps are the clearest fit. Set its working directory and environment deliberately, and use commands verified against the project and agent.
- Plugin: Consider a plugin if a required integration is not covered by the available native tasks or scripts; confirm compatibility with your Bamboo release.
Do not copy a generic Composer or PHPUnit command into a production plan without checking the project’s own configuration. The official sources here do not validate a particular PHP runtime, Composer invocation, test command, or task configuration.

Make build output available for deployment
Decide what the application needs at release time, then configure the build and deployment plans around that output. Depending on the project, the deployable result and the files needed to produce it may differ; this documentation does not establish a standard PHP artifact layout.
- Identify the exact files or package the deployment process consumes.
- Configure the build to make those outputs available downstream using the artifact and plan features supported by your Bamboo version.
- Configure the deployment plan to use the intended build output and execute the release procedure for the target environment.
- Validate the paths, permissions, and deployment behavior in a non-production environment before relying on them for a release.
Configure deployment environments and release gates
Bamboo deployment projects associate releases with environments and results. A build can trigger a release, but a team may prefer a manual checkpoint before deployment. Atlassian documents an approval-like workaround: place a manual stage at the end of the source plan and configure the deployment trigger to run after that stage succeeds. This introduces a human action; it should not be described as native deployment approval. Confirm the behavior in your Bamboo release using Atlassian’s manual-stage deployment workflow guidance.

Automatic or manually gated deployment?
- Automatic trigger: Choose this when the release policy permits deployment after the required build succeeds without an additional human action.
- Manual-stage gate: Choose this when a person must decide whether the source plan can proceed to deployment. Account for the extra action and verify the trigger sequence on your installed version.
Choose UI configuration or YAML Specs
A UI-configured plan can suit teams that manage settings directly in Bamboo. YAML Specs can represent plans and deployments as configuration in a repository. The right choice depends on whether your Bamboo version supports the structure you intend to use, whether version-controlled configuration and reuse matter to the team, and how you will organize permissions.
Atlassian’s YAML Specs example was tested on Bamboo 9.6.1 and is supplied as-is; it is not proof that every example or structure works on another release. Atlassian also warns that a shared Specs repository can scan all plans and deployments it contains: one commit may trigger many plans, use agents, and delay builds. For the cited include example, plan definitions and permissions should be kept in separate files. Test the approach outside production and review Atlassian’s YAML Specs guidance against your release.

Common setup problems and how to investigate them
- The plan cannot find PHP, Composer, or a test executable: Check which agent ran the job, whether the required software is installed there, and whether the configured executable path matches that agent. A capability declaration alone does not install the tool.
- A command works locally but fails in Bamboo: Compare the agent OS, working directory, environment variables, executable versions, and repository contents with the assumptions made by the command. Correct the task or agent setup based on the project’s actual requirements.
- The deployment cannot find its input: Check which files the build produced, where they are located, and whether the deployment plan receives the intended output. Do not assume an artifact path not verified for your plan.
- A Specs change starts more plans than expected: Review the plans and deployments included in the shared Specs repository and the scanning or triggering behavior configured for it. Separate definitions and permissions where required by the cited include example, and test the effect before a production change.
- Deployment does not wait for a person, or does not start afterward: Check the manual stage’s position and the deployment trigger condition. The documented pattern relies on the stage succeeding before the trigger proceeds and must be verified for the installed release.

A Bamboo pipeline is for building and deploying software; if your release process also needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled individually. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
