Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallVisual testing for mobile apps checks whether a screen still renders as intended. In screenshot testing, the app captures a screen and compares it with an approved reference image, or baseline. Differences are reviewed to decide whether they reveal a regression or reflect an intentional design change; a mismatch alone does not prove the code is wrong.
A maintainable starting point is a small set of important screens, captured in repeatable states and compared under consistent conditions. Add device and configuration coverage only when it checks a distinct layout or rendering risk.

What mobile visual testing checks
Visual tests focus on rendered appearance: layout, spacing, typography, colors, component states, and other visible attributes. A screenshot test captures the current UI and compares it with an approved image called a baseline or golden. The comparison produces a difference that a developer or reviewer inspects.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis complements, rather than replaces, behavior tests. A behavior test can verify that a button responds correctly; a visual test can catch that the button is misplaced, clipped, or styled unexpectedly. Screenshot differences can also come from intended UI changes or capture-environment variation, so they need review before being treated as defects.

How to get started with screenshot tests
- Pick a few high-value screens. Start with screens where a visual regression would matter: for example, a core flow, a complex layout, or a reusable component. Keep the initial set deliberately small.
- Make each screen reproducible. Control test data and relevant app state. Use stable account states and content, and avoid uncontrolled animations, notifications, or transient content where possible.
- Choose how to render and capture. Decide whether a host-side renderer is enough for the UI under test or whether the test needs an emulator or physical device. Keep the capture environment consistent between baseline creation and later runs.
- Generate and review baselines. Capture the intended screen state, inspect the image, and save the approved reference in source control or an appropriate image service. A baseline should represent an intentional design, not simply the latest output.
- Run comparisons locally or in CI. Inspect the current image, the reference, and the difference view together. Investigate unexpected changes before updating any reference.
- Expand selectively. Add another screen, device, or configuration when it covers a distinct risk. Avoid creating combinations that add screenshots without useful new feedback.
Choose a testing approach
The right approach depends on what the test must render, how representative the result needs to be, and the execution time and maintenance the team can support. Android screenshot-testing guidance describes both host-side and instrumented options; Firebase Test Lab documents instrumented tests and device-matrix execution.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Host-side rendering | You want to render components without launching a full emulator or device. Android approaches include Layoutlib-based tools and Robolectric Native Graphics. | Rendering scope and fidelity depend on the tool and test. Layoutlib-oriented tools can be easier for static components; approaches integrated with Robolectric support broader scope. |
| Compose Preview Screenshot Testing | You build UI with Jetpack Compose and want to verify visual attributes using the official preview screenshot-testing option. | Use it for visual assertions, and retain separate tests for behavior and interaction. |
| Instrumented emulator or device tests | The test needs an app running in an Android environment, or you need to inspect rendering on selected virtual or physical configurations. | Execution and configuration management can take more effort than host-side rendering. Firebase Test Lab supports Android instrumentation tests and selected device configurations. |
When evaluating tools, compare execution environment, rendering engine, test scope, runtime, configuration coverage, reference-image storage, and how small rendering differences are handled. A hosted test service can broaden device coverage, but it is not required to learn the basic workflow.
Which screens and devices should you cover?
Rendered output can change with screen size, theme, font size, orientation, locale, OS version, and form factor. Android devices also include varied contexts such as tablets and foldables. Testing every combination can produce a large image set without a proportional gain in feedback.

Choose combinations that exercise different behavior in the layout or rendering, and record why each is included. For instance, a narrow phone and a tablet may expose different layout constraints; a second locale is useful when translated text could change wrapping. The point is not to test these examples universally, but to select configurations that represent risks in your own app.
A physical Android phone is one possible target, not a prerequisite for every screenshot approach. Host-side rendering and virtual devices are also options; Firebase Test Lab supports virtual configurations. The available guidance does not establish a required phone model or hardware specification.
Keep screenshots stable and useful
Control capture conditions
Rendering may vary between platforms, OS versions, libraries, and hardware. For pixel-perfect comparisons, use a consistent capture environment, such as the same CI environment for repeated runs. Keep app data and state deterministic, and suppress transient content. Sauce Labs’ vendor documentation specifically recommends disabling notifications before mobile visual tests; treat that as practical vendor guidance, not a universal standard.
Rank #3
Use tolerances carefully
Some comparison systems use percentage thresholds or more sophisticated difference handling to reduce noise. A broad tolerance can also hide a genuine visual error, while a strict comparison can flag harmless rendering variation. Tune thresholds against reviewed examples rather than assuming that more tolerance is always better.

Keep the baseline set focused
Image files accumulate, and binary assets can be awkward to manage in source control. Begin with a limited, high-value checked-in set. Revisit image storage if the collection becomes unwieldy, and avoid accepting every changed screenshot automatically: doing so can teach the suite to approve regressions.
Separate visual and functional assertions
Screenshot tests can be slower than equivalent behavior tests, and a single UI change can affect many images. Use screenshot comparisons to assert appearance, while keeping behavior tests for interactions and functionality. A smaller suite targeted at visible risk is generally easier to review and maintain than exhaustive combinations.

Troubleshoot common screenshot-test problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated diffs with no intentional UI change | Capture conditions have drifted, or the screen contains unstable data, animation, notifications, or transient content. | Compare OS, renderer, device configuration, app state, and test data with the baseline run. Stabilize the state and use a consistent environment. |
| Too many images to review or store | The suite covers redundant combinations or every available variable. | Remove cases that do not test a distinct risk. Keep a focused baseline set and reconsider storage if binary files become difficult to manage. |
| Real UI errors pass despite visible changes | The image-difference threshold may be too permissive, or baselines may be updated without review. | Review known examples of both harmless and meaningful differences, adjust comparison settings, and require intentional baseline review. |
| Instrumented capture includes unwanted notifications | System notifications can add content unrelated to the app under test. | Disable notifications for the capture where appropriate; this is also recommended in Sauce Labs’ vendor guidance. |
| Appium XCUITest viewport screenshot is unreliable | The XCUITest Driver documents a limitation specific to mobile: viewportScreenshot. |
For that driver method, its current documentation recommends getScreenshot instead. This note applies to the named API, not all screenshot capture. |
Or skip the browser setup
For screenshots of web pages used in a mobile workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. It is for website captures, not a replacement for native-app screenshot tests.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
