Then refresh the license token, confirm that the subscription is still assigned and active, and check for tenant or identity issues. A generic activation key is not the usual fix: Visual Studio IDE subscription access is verified by signing in.
1. Confirm you are using the assigned account
The wrong sign-in identity is a common reason Visual Studio cannot see or verify a subscription. Check the exact email address in the subscription assignment or welcome email, then make sure that is the identity signed in to Visual Studio. This matters if you have both a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account, even when their email addresses look similar. Microsoft’s sign-in guidance and “>subscription guidance explain how subscription access is associated with an account.
If the subscriptions portal opens but shows the wrong subscription, select the intended subscription from the portal’s subscription list. If an employer-provided subscription is missing, ask the subscription administrator to verify that it is assigned to your sign-in identity and remains active. It may have been assigned to another email, expired, or been unassigned or reassigned.
2. Refresh a stale license token
A stale-license warning does not by itself mean your subscription has expired. Visual Studio may need to refresh its license token if you have not used the IDE or connected to the internet for an extended period, or if you signed out. Microsoft’s license update guidance says to re-enter the credentials for the account associated with the subscription.

- In Visual Studio, open File > Account Settings.
- Check which account is signed in and review the license details and any stale-license notice.
- Sign in again with the subscription-assigned account and complete any requested authentication.
Visual Studio can warn before a token becomes stale; Account Settings can also show how many days remain. If your organization uses Conditional Access or multifactor authentication, its policies may affect account state or license recognition. If your account is associated with several Microsoft Entra tenants, Microsoft suggests filtering out nonessential tenants: open File > Account Settings > … > Apply filter.
3. Check whether the subscription is actually expired
Use File > Account Settings to inspect the license details before treating a sign-in failure as an expired subscription. A stale token is a refresh issue; an expired subscription means the account no longer has the relevant access rights. Microsoft’s documented options for an expired trial or subscription are to renew it, sign in with another account that has an applicable subscription, or enter an applicable product key.

Expiry does not affect every benefit in the same way. Under the applicable licensing terms, many subscriptions provide eligible users perpetual rights to the IDE version they already have, but that right does not include updates to future Visual Studio versions. Other subscription benefits may end or remain available only for their remaining term. Check the terms for your subscription rather than assuming every benefit continues.
4. Do not look for a generic Visual Studio IDE key
For subscription-based Visual Studio IDE access, signing in with the assigned account is the verification method. Microsoft says product keys for the IDE are not available through the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal. Visual Studio 2026 also does not require a product key; access is by signing in with the assigned subscription account. See Microsoft’s product-key guidance for the IDE.

Product keys may still apply to other eligible software included with a subscription, earlier Visual Studio versions, or certain organization-managed deployment scenarios. Microsoft lists software such as Windows, Windows Server, Office client applications, and Expression Studio among products that may require keys. A key for one of those products is separate from unlocking the Visual Studio IDE. Microsoft’s subscription product-key page describes those cases.
5. Check tenant, alias, and identity issues
Even with the right subscription, identity configuration can prevent access. Microsoft documents problems involving deleted identities and email aliases that differ from the sign-in identity assigned to the subscription. The cited Microsoft guidance also says the subscription portals and Visual Studio IDE do not support GCC High or private-cloud tenants. If you recently changed jobs, had an account deleted or renamed, or use an alias, ask your organization’s administrator to confirm the tenant is supported and identify the exact sign-in identity assigned to the subscription. Avoid renaming an account or creating a personal Microsoft account with a work address as a workaround until the administrator confirms the right approach. See Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting page.

6. Contact the support team that handles the problem
For account access, subscription assignment, sales, or billing questions, use Visual Studio Subscriptions support. For a technical problem with the IDE itself, use Visual Studio technical support. Some subscriptions include a limited number of technical support incidents; availability depends on the benefits attached to your subscription.
