Visual Effects Performance Settings: How to Make Windows Feel Faster

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows’ Visual Effects settings control interface animations, fades, shadows, transparency, thumbnails and text rendering. They can make an older or resource-constrained PC feel more responsive, but they are not a universal speed or gaming-FPS switch. The most useful approach is to test Adjust for best performance, then use Custom to restore readability and visual cues you need.

What Visual Effects Performance Settings do

These options are in the Windows Performance Options dialog. Depending on your Windows version, edition and feature update, the available checkboxes and wording can differ.

  • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing.
  • Animate taskbar and Start-menu behavior.
  • Fade or slide menus and tooltips.
  • Draw window shadows and translucent interface elements.
  • Show thumbnail previews instead of icons.
  • Smooth scrolling and window-dragging visuals.
  • Smooth the edges of screen fonts.

Turning off effects reduces some desktop rendering work and often improves perceived responsiveness—menus open more abruptly and windows react with less visual delay. It does not repair a failing drive, insufficient RAM, a runaway process or a slow application.

How to open the full Visual Effects panel

Use Start search

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. On the Visual Effects tab, choose a preset or select Custom.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.

Microsoft documents this route for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Windows performance guidance.

Use a Run command

Press Windows key + R, enter SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe, and press Enter. If that shortcut is not available on your build, enter sysdm.cpl, open Advanced, select Settings under Performance, and choose Visual Effects. Labels and access can be restricted by organizational policy.

What each preset means

Preset What it does Best for
Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer Windows automatically selects an effects configuration. A safe default when you do not want to tune individual options.
Adjust for best appearance Prioritizes animations, shadows, previews and other visual polish. Modern hardware where appearance matters more than snappy interaction.
Adjust for best performance Turns off most listed visual effects. A quick maximum-responsiveness test on an old or sluggish PC.
Custom Lets you choose each effect individually. The best long-term compromise for most people.

Microsoft specifically recommends Adjust for best performance when the goal is improved Windows responsiveness. Exact results depend on hardware, drivers, display configuration and the Windows build.

A faster desktop without making Windows hard to use

Rather than disabling everything permanently, start with cosmetic effects that provide little information:

  • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing.
  • Animations in the taskbar and Start menu.
  • Fade or slide menus into view.
  • Fade or slide ToolTips into view.
  • Show shadows under windows.
  • Transparency or translucent effects, where available.

Then keep the options that improve legibility or help you identify content:

  • Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
  • Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter.
  • Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
  • Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
  • Smooth edges of screen fonts for clearer text.
  • Show thumbnails instead of icons for visual file identification.
  • Show window contents while dragging if you need to see placement while moving a window.
  • Taskbar thumbnail previews and icon-label shadows when they improve navigation.

This custom approach avoids promising a fixed percentage gain. The usual benefit is a more immediate-feeling shell, not a measured increase in every workload.

Windows 11’s simpler visual-effects controls

For a narrower change, open Start → Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects. Turn off:

  • Animation effects, which removes many Windows transitions.
  • Transparency effects, which makes backgrounds more opaque and reduces translucent decoration.

These switches are convenient for reducing motion or visual distraction, but they do not expose every checkbox in the legacy Performance Options dialog. Windows builds may also surface transparency through Personalization settings. Microsoft explains these controls in its accessibility guidance.

Do these settings increase game FPS?

Usually, no meaningful or guaranteed increase should be expected. Visual Effects settings affect the Windows desktop shell; they do not replace a game’s graphics options. They may reduce a small amount of background rendering or make the desktop feel less busy, but a game that stutters is more likely limited by its own rendering workload, CPU, GPU, memory, drivers or background processes.

Microsoft lists visual-effects changes alongside broader checks such as startup apps, updates, storage and resource usage—not as a dedicated FPS solution.

Which computers benefit most?

System Likely approach
Older CPU or GPU Try best performance, then restore font smoothing and thumbnails through Custom.
Integrated graphics Disable animations, transparency and shadows if desktop transitions lag.
Low-RAM PC Use effects changes as a small shell optimization, while checking memory use and startup apps.
Battery-powered laptop Use Custom if needed, but also review background activity and power mode. The separate Windows Best performance power mode can increase heat and battery drain.
Modern desktop with no desktop lag Expect little or no noticeable difference.
Remote Desktop or virtual machine Results vary with host acceleration, guest settings, connection quality and policy.

Accessibility needs matter too: removing animation may reduce motion discomfort, while removing font smoothing or thumbnails can make the interface harder to read.

Test the change instead of guessing

  1. Note your current preset and any custom checkboxes.
  2. Apply Adjust for best performance as a diagnostic test.
  3. Open several File Explorer windows, switch applications and virtual desktops, resize and move windows, and open Start, taskbar previews and context menus.
  4. Reproduce the original delay while watching Task Manager for CPU, memory, disk and GPU usage.
  5. If the interface feels better, switch to Custom and restore the readability features you miss.

There is no universal improvement figure. The result depends on the bottleneck, Windows version, drivers, monitor setup and background software.

If Windows is still slow

Visual effects are only one possible cause. In Task Manager, inspect:

Do I need to restart Windows?

Usually no. Apply the settings; restart Windows Explorer or sign out and back in only if the interface does not update correctly.

Does this work on Windows 10?

Yes. Windows 10 and Windows 11 both provide the Performance Options Visual Effects dialog, although labels and available options can vary by build.

The Bottom Line

For most sluggish PCs, disable animations, fades, transparency and shadows first. Use Custom to keep font smoothing and thumbnails, and investigate Task Manager, storage, thermals, drivers or hardware if the desktop remains slow.
