How to Change the Ringtone and Notification Sound on an Android Phone

Use Android’s Sound & vibration settings to change call ringtones and default alerts, then check app categories, volume, silent modes and Do Not Disturb when a sound does not play.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On most current Android phones, change calls at Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone. Change the general alert sound at Settings → Sound & vibration → Default notification sound; some Pixel phones label this Notification. Menu names vary by manufacturer, model and Android version.

Change the ringtone for incoming calls

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration (or Sound).
  3. Tap Phone ringtone or Ringtone.
  4. Choose a sound and preview it.
  5. Tap Save if that button appears.

This changes the sound for ordinary incoming phone calls. It does not automatically change alarms, media, timers or an app’s separately configured notification sound. Google documents the general procedure at Android Help.

Change the default notification sound

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Default notification sound.
  4. Select a sound and tap Save, if shown.

On some current Pixel interfaces, use Settings → Sound & vibration → Notification, then select the sound and save it. See Google’s Pixel instructions at Change notification sounds and vibrations. This is a default; an app or notification category can override it.

Choosing a sound and making it loud enough are separate settings. Press a volume button, then tap the menu or three-dot control beside the slider to expand all controls.

Use a custom ringtone

Google’s documented computer-transfer method is:

  1. Connect the phone to a computer with a USB cable.
  2. Open the phone’s internal storage.
  3. Open (or create) the Ringtones folder.
  4. Copy a compatible audio file, such as an MP3, into that folder.
  5. Disconnect the phone.
  6. Return to Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone and select the file if it appears.

The phone must support the file format, and file-manager behavior differs by device. The Ringtones folder is for call ringtones; alarm sounds use different locations. A short, clearly audible clip is usually easier to recognize than a full song.

Can you use a custom notification sound?

There is no single custom-notification-file procedure that works on every Android phone or app. Put the audio file on the phone, open the relevant notification sound picker, and select it if it appears. If it does not, the device may require a Notifications folder, a supported format, or the app’s own sound picker. Google’s general documentation specifically establishes the Ringtones method, not one universal notification-folder rule.

Built-in sounds or ringtone apps?

Built-in sounds are the most predictable. Third-party ringtone apps are optional, not required; review permissions, advertising, subscriptions, privacy practices and licensing before installing one. Manual transfer gives you control without adding another app.

If the new sound does not play

  1. Raise the correct volume. Expand the volume panel and increase Ring volume or Notification volume, not just Media volume.
  2. Leave silent or vibrate mode. Switch the phone back to Ring.
  3. Check Do Not Disturb or Modes. On Pixel, swipe down, tap Modes and check Do Not Disturb. Modes can allow selected people, apps, alarms or other interruptions rather than blocking everything. See Pixel Modes and Do Not Disturb.
  4. Check app permission. Go to Settings → Notifications → App notifications → [app] and make sure notifications are allowed.
  5. Check the category. Open the app’s notification category and change a Silent category to one with a sound.
  6. Check audio routing. Bluetooth or another connected audio device can affect where some audio is heard.
  7. Reopen the picker or restart. After transferring a file, reopen the sound picker; if it still is not listed, restart the phone and verify the format and folder.

For missed-call checks, Google also recommends reviewing sound, mute and interruption settings at Pixel Phone Help.

If your Android phone has different menus

Use the Settings search field for ringtone, notification sound, sound or notification categories. Depending on the phone, you may see Sound instead of Sound & vibration, Ringtone instead of Phone ringtone, or a separate Notifications menu. Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus and other manufacturers add their own sound libraries and file pickers.

Older Android versions may combine call and notification volume, use a different volume-panel control, or place settings under Settings → Sound. Work-profile alerts can also have separate controls on supported devices: Settings → Sound & vibration → Advanced → Work profile sounds. Google’s Android guide covers these version and profile differences at Android Help.
