Skype’s consumer app was retired on May 5, 2025. The old Windows setting was Skype → More (…) → Settings → Messaging → Enable message rewrite suggestions, but it is no longer a supported way to configure messaging. Microsoft directs former consumer Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free. For AI rewriting today, use Teams’ Rewrite with Copilot; for ordinary word predictions, use Windows 11 text suggestions.
Microsoft’s retirement notice is available at Skype is retiring in May 2025.

The former Skype setting
An early-2024 third-party tutorial documented this path in Skype for Windows:

- Open Skype.
- Select More (…).
- Select Settings.
- Open Messaging.
- Find Enable message rewrite suggestions.
- Switch it On or Off.
- Close Settings and test the message composer.

What the switch controlled
- On: Skype could offer AI-generated alternatives or improvements while you drafted a message.
- Off: Those rewrite suggestions should stop appearing.
This was a writing-assistance feature. It was not Windows spell-checking, predictive typing, translation, suggested replies, or an automatic change to messages you had already sent. Those scope details describe the expected product behavior; Microsoft did not publish a current guarantee for every legacy build.
Can you still change it in Skype on Windows 11?
Not as a current, supported consumer-Skype workflow. Microsoft retired the consumer Skype app on May 5, 2025 and directs users to sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with their Skype credentials. Microsoft says contacts and chats transfer automatically during that migration.
An old installation might still show the legacy menu, but its presence does not mean the build or service is supported. Do not download an old installer to restore the toggle: unsupported software can create security, compatibility, and account-access problems. This retirement notice concerns consumer Skype; do not apply it to Skype for Business, which is a separate product.

Use Rewrite with Copilot in Microsoft Teams
Teams has a different, current feature called Rewrite with Copilot. Microsoft documents it for a Teams personal account used with a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription. Migration to Teams Free does not by itself establish eligibility.
In a Teams chat or community post:
- Type a draft in the compose box.
- Select Rewrite with Copilot beneath the compose box.
- Choose Rewrite, Proofread, or Adjust.
- Under Adjust, choose an available length or tone such as concise, longer, casual, professional, confident, or enthusiastic.
- Select X to reject the result, Adjust to generate another version, or Replace to put the result in the compose box.
- Review the wording and select Send yourself.
You can also select Edit on an existing message and invoke the rewrite controls. See Microsoft’s instructions at Rewrite your messages with Copilot in Microsoft Teams.
Because Copilot rewriting is a cloud-based AI service, avoid entering confidential, regulated, or sensitive text unless your personal or workplace rules allow it.

Turn Windows 11 text suggestions on or off
If you wanted words predicted as you type—not rewritten drafts—use Windows 11’s built-in text suggestions:

- Select Time & language.
- Select Typing.
- Turn Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard on or off.
- Adjust Multilingual text suggestions separately if needed.
These predictions can appear in apps such as Teams, Word, and a web browser. Microsoft’s current path is documented at Enable text suggestions in Windows.

Troubleshooting
“I don’t see Messaging in Skype.”
You may be using a post-retirement build, a different application such as Teams, Skype for Business, or a Skype release that never received the feature. Treat the old path as historical and use the Windows or Teams control that matches what you actually see.
“I moved to Teams, but there is no Rewrite button.”
- Your account may not have an eligible Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription.
- You may be signed in with a work or school account instead of a Teams personal account.
- The feature may not have rolled out to that client or account.
- You may be looking for suggested replies rather than Copilot rewriting.
Changing Windows typing settings or reinstalling Skype will not add a Teams Copilot control.

They operate at different layers. Windows text suggestions predict words during typing; Copilot rewriting changes a draft after you invoke it; suggested replies provide short response buttons. Disabling one does not necessarily disable the others.

Managed workplace device
An administrator can control Teams messaging policies, including suggested replies. If a control is unavailable on a work-managed device, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.
What to use instead of retired Skype
- Teams Free: Microsoft’s migration destination for consumer Skype users. Microsoft’s consumer Teams page is Teams for home.
- Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium: Relevant when you specifically want eligible Teams personal-account Copilot rewriting; availability remains subject to Microsoft’s account and feature rollout.
- Windows text suggestions: The free built-in choice when predictive typing is enough.
- Microsoft Copilot: A separate general-purpose rewriting experience, not a replacement Skype setting. See Microsoft Copilot for individuals.
- Third-party Teams extensions: Tools such as Tonero for Teams may add inline rewriting, but review their permissions, privacy terms, compatibility, and workplace approval before using them.
The Bottom Line
The Skype switch was real, but it belongs to a retired consumer app. Keep the old path only as a reference for legacy installations; use Teams Rewrite with Copilot for eligible accounts or Windows 11 text suggestions for predictive typing.
