The interface is often called a virtual tape library (VTL), though vendors do not use VTS and VTL uniformly.
What a virtual tape server is
A physical tape library uses tape drives and cartridges, often with robotic equipment to move media. A VTS emulates some or all of those tape-library functions so a host or backup application can work with logical drives, volumes, and sometimes a media changer. The virtual cartridges are not necessarily physical tape: their data may reside on disk, in a local cache, on physical tape behind the system, or in cloud object or archive storage.

For example, Dell describes its VTL as an emulation of a physical tape library on a disk-based system. IBM’s TS7700 documentation describes disk modules used as cache alongside emulated tape drives that appear to a host like physical drives. These are examples of particular product architectures, not a universal VTS design. Dell DR Series System Administrator Guide: Understanding VTL; IBM TS7700 overview.

The terms overlap, but they do not have one fixed meaning across vendors. VTL often refers to the logical library interface presented to backup software; VTS can refer to the system that implements that interface or to a named product. IBM Storage Protect, for instance, describes a VTL library in terms of a SCSI-controlled media changer. When evaluating a product, use its documentation to establish what it means by VTS or VTL and which devices and protocols it presents. IBM Storage Protect: Virtual tape library.
#1 Best Overall
- Number of Cartridge Slots: 8 slots provide ample capacity for organizing and storing multiple tape cartridges efficiently
- Drive Type: LTO technology ensures reliable and high-performance data storage and retrieval for enterprise environments
- Native Storage Capacity: 360 TB native capacity delivers extensive storage space for long-term data retention and backup requirements
- Encryption: Built-in encryption capability protects sensitive data against unauthorized access even if tapes are lost or stolen
- Formats Supported: LTO-6 (Read/Write) and LTO-9 compatibility provides flexible media options for various backup and archival needs
What happens when backup software writes data
- The host sees tape-like devices. The VTS exposes virtual drives and volumes, and may expose a media changer. The backup application communicates with these devices using the interfaces supported by that system.
- The application writes to a virtual volume. From the backup software’s perspective, the operation can fit an existing tape-oriented workflow, provided the application, drive and media types, changer, protocol, and software version are supported together.
- The VTS places data on its backend. Depending on the design, data may be held on disk or cache, transferred to attached physical tape, or stored in cloud object storage. The name “virtual tape” does not tell you which one.
- Restore availability follows the backend and tier. Data on an online cache or storage tier may be accessible differently from data moved to an archive tier. A restore may require an archive recall step, so check the product’s retrieval workflow rather than assuming every virtual cartridge is immediately online.
A cloud example is AWS Tape Gateway: it presents virtual tapes through an iSCSI VTL interface, stores data locally as it is written, then asynchronously uploads it to virtual tapes in Amazon S3. Tapes can also be moved to an archive tier. That is AWS’s described service architecture, not a behavior that applies to every VTS. AWS Storage Gateway: How Tape Gateway works.
How to assess a VTS for your environment
Check these points before treating a virtual tape system as a drop-in replacement for an existing library:
Rank #2
- High Capacity Storage: Provides 30TB recording capacity for extensive data archiving
- Long-Term Archival: 30-year archival life ensures data preservation for decades
- Secure Data Protection: Barium Ferrite technology provides reliable data security
- Professional Grade: Meets demanding requirements for business-critical information storage
- Cost Efficient: Reduces per-gigabyte storage costs compared to disk-based solutions
- Backend and data path: Identify whether data is stored on disk or cache, copied to physical tape, placed in cloud object storage, or moved to an archive tier.
- Backup-software compatibility: Verify support for the exact backup application and version, emulated drive and media types, media changer, and connection protocol. Compatibility depends on the specific configuration; IBM documents conditions for Storage Protect VTL operation.
- Restore and archive procedure: Find out where recent data resides, how archived volumes are recalled, what operational steps are required, and what availability expectations apply to each storage tier.
- Operational ownership: Establish who provisions and monitors the appliance, gateway, or cloud service and who handles protection, maintenance, and recovery procedures.
Do not assume that a product’s support for “VTL” covers every combination of backup software, drive type, changer, and version. Confirm the support matrix and configuration guidance for the exact systems you plan to use.
What a VTS changes—and what it does not
A VTS can preserve tape-based backup workflows while replacing or supplementing the physical-media layer with disk or cloud storage. IBM describes improved availability and quicker backup among benefits of IBM i virtual tape; those are product-specific claims, not guaranteed results for every virtual tape server. IBM i: Virtual tape.

Virtualization also does not automatically make stored data offline, instantly restorable, or equivalent to an isolated physical tape copy. Those characteristics depend on the backend, storage tier, and operating procedures. For cloud-backed virtual tapes, check how caching, archiving, and recall work for the selected service and tier. Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Choose Quantum LTO Ultrium Media - Quantum’s LTO Ultrium media is manufactured to the highest industry standards for quality and reliability—ensuring high performance and durability, whether used for primary backup or long-term archive
- Quantum LTO Ultrium Media Offers High Storage Capacity - Up to 18 TB native and up to 45 TB compressed based on 2.5:1 compression (LTO-9, LTO-8, LTO-7, and LTO-6) or 2:1 compression (other LTO)
- High Performance - A high-durability non-contact IC memory chip up to 16 KB is built in; this contributes to significant improvement in tape library access and health reporting
- Compliant With All Media Integrity Analysis Utilities - Advanced Media Usage Reports provide a view of the media condition for an entire media pool used within a specific tape library - even those in off-site storage. Extended Data Life Management (EDLM) is designed to ensure the media integrity of cartridges placed in archival/vaulted storage. When your critical data is involved, it’s important to have a complete health record of all your media.
- Secure Your Data - Quantum’s LTO media offering supports your comprehensive, “edge-to-core” backup, recovery, and archive strategy. LTO combined with Quantum's most secure tape libraries can mitigate the risks of a cyber attack such as ransomware, and meet long-term archive requirements by providing a physical air gap, greater density, and better performance.
