Build a 15-Second Multi-Shot AI Video With Python: A Simple Timing Workflow

A practical workflow for pacing a 15-second AI video: assign shot lengths, trim generated clips, concatenate them with MoviePy, and check the export.

To make a 15-second AI video from multiple shots, plan shot durations that total 15 seconds, generate source clips, trim them to the timeline, then concatenate and export them with Python. For example, three shots lasting 4, 5, and 6 seconds add up to 15 seconds; that is one possible edit, not a universal pacing formula.

Plan the 15-second timeline before generating clips

Write down what happens in each shot and how long it should last. The key constraint is the finished edit: the individual generated clips do not need to be exactly as long as their final shots.

Shot Example duration Timeline Example visual action
1 4 seconds 0–4 seconds A person enters a room
2 5 seconds 4–9 seconds They notice an object on a table
3 6 seconds 9–15 seconds They pick it up and leave

The actions are illustrative. Choose lengths that serve the sequence and make the total exactly 15 seconds; the sources do not establish an ideal shot length or pacing curve for this format.

OpenAI’s Videos API reference lists generated durations of 4, 8, or 12 seconds for the models and options shown on that page when accessed in 2026. Those are source-generation choices, not a requirement that your finished shots use those lengths. Capabilities can change, so check the current reference before relying on a duration in code.

Generate clips, then trim them to each shot’s assigned time

Generate a suitable source clip for each shot. If a generated clip is longer than its assigned segment, select the portion you want in the final edit. The MoviePy clip reference documents subclipped(start_time, end_time) for selecting a clip segment.

For the example timeline, the first shot occupies 0–4 seconds, the second 4–9 seconds, and the third 9–15 seconds of the finished video. When trimming source files, each trim starts at a time within its own file; the clips are then placed one after another. Independently generated shots are separate source clips, so do not assume they will maintain visual continuity automatically.

Stitch the trimmed clips with MoviePy 2.x

The following example uses the current MoviePy 2.x-style imports and methods. Install MoviePy in your Python environment with pip install moviepy, then update the filenames and trim boundaries to match your generated clips. Each example trim below starts at the beginning of its source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
from moviepy import VideoFileClip, concatenate_videoclips

# Each tuple is (filename, trim start, trim end).
shots = [
    ("shot1.mp4", 0, 4),
    ("shot2.mp4", 0, 5),
    ("shot3.mp4", 0, 6),
]

clips = []
for filename, start, end in shots:
    source = VideoFileClip(filename)
    clips.append(source.subclipped(start, end))

final = concatenate_videoclips(clips, method="compose")
final.write_videofile("final_15_seconds.mp4", codec="libx264", audio_codec="aac")

final.close()
for clip in clips:
    clip.close()

MoviePy’s concatenation reference describes two approaches. chain passes frames through in sequence without correcting size differences; compose places clips on a common canvas and accommodates different input dimensions. The example uses compose so clips with mismatched dimensions can be combined, though it does not make their framing or aspect ratios identical.

Use documentation for the MoviePy major version installed in your environment. MoviePy 1.x examples use different imports and method conventions, so mixing a 1.x snippet with a 2.x installation can cause errors.

Check the exported video before sharing it

  • Runtime: Confirm the final file is 15 seconds. The three example trims total 4 + 5 + 6 seconds.
  • Shot boundaries: Watch each cut to make sure the previous action ends cleanly and the next begins at the intended moment.
  • Frame size and aspect ratio: Check whether the clips share dimensions and whether the composed output frames each shot as intended.
  • Audio: Listen across every cut. Check for abrupt changes, unexpected silence, or overlapping sound.
  • Transitions: Review the joins. Concatenating clips in sequence does not add dissolves or other transitions automatically.

OpenAI’s Sora 2 Prompting Guide puts the editorial choice this way: “Treat each shot as a creative unit, and you can either stitch them together in an edit or let them play out as a sequence in one go.” For a 15-second edit built from separate clips, trimming and joining gives you direct control over where each shot begins and ends.
