virtme-ng for Faster Kernel Development: What It Automates and What It Doesn’t

virtme-ng streamlines the Linux kernel edit-build-boot-test loop with QEMU, but its speed depends on your setup and its minimal kernels do not replace hardware validation.

virtme-ng speeds up Linux kernel development mainly by shortening the setup between edits: its vng command can configure, build, boot, and test a kernel in a virtual machine without manually preparing a fresh disk image or test machine for each iteration. It does not establish a universal compile time. The project describes rebuilding in “a few minutes (rather than hours),” but does not provide a benchmark setup or independent measurement for that claim.

What virtme-ng does

The virtme-ng project describes its software as “a tool that allows to easily and quickly recompile and test a Linux kernel, starting from the source code.” It packages common development steps behind the vng command: generate a minimum bootable configuration when needed, build the kernel, and launch it in QEMU for testing.

The efficiency comes from the workflow as much as from compilation. Instead of repeatedly deploying a kernel to a separate machine or maintaining a full disk image for each test, developers can start a virtualized guest using their existing system as the basis for its filesystem.

The Linux Foundation’s description of a mentorship session published on 2024-10-02 says the approach uses QEMU/KVM, virtiofs, and overlayfs to boot a recompiled kernel in a virtualized copy-on-write snapshot. That explains the intended setup; it is not an independent performance benchmark. See the virtme-ng project README.

Does virtme-ng make kernel compilation faster?

It can make the overall edit-build-boot-test loop easier and faster by automating configuration and startup, and by avoiding repeated deployment steps. The project’s qualitative claim of rebuilding in minutes rather than hours is not tied to stated hardware, kernel configuration, build conditions, or a controlled comparison. Treat it as a description of the project’s goal, not a guaranteed duration or measured speedup.

Build time still depends on the source tree, configuration, available CPU and memory, storage, and whether the build runs with hardware-assisted virtualization or software emulation. virtme-ng-generated kernels also omit many features to reduce build time. A shorter build of that configuration is not equivalent to compiling every feature enabled in a production kernel.

Build and boot a kernel from a source checkout

For a basic local workflow, run the build and then start the virtual machine from the kernel source checkout:

  1. Build the kernel with vng --build. If there is no .config, virtme-ng can generate a minimum configuration intended to boot the test guest.

  2. Start the guest with vng. The command launches the built kernel in QEMU.

  3. Alternatively, combine the actions and select a source revision with vng --build --commit <tag>.

  4. For tests that need to run inside the guest, use the command-passing options supported by your installed version of vng.

CLI options can change between releases. Check vng --help and the documentation for the version you installed before relying on a particular option or command sequence.

Choose a workflow that fits the test

Use a custom configuration or existing kernel

A generated minimum configuration is convenient for a quick boot, but tests often depend on particular kernel options or subsystems. Supply a project-specific kernel configuration when coverage matters. The README also documents running prebuilt kernels and choosing output directories, which can help separate builds or reuse an existing artifact.

Build on another machine

The --build-host option lets the build run on a remote Linux machine rather than consuming local CPU and memory. The README also shows an optional execution prefix, such as a remote chroot command. This can be useful when a developer workstation is resource-constrained or a team has a prepared build or CI environment; it does not require a particular hosting provider.

Use caching or another architecture

The README demonstrates CCache and cross-architecture builds. Cross-architecture testing requires an appropriate root filesystem, and the result still needs to match the architecture and environment relevant to the test. Consult the installed version’s documentation for the exact options and prerequisites.

What you need to run virtme-ng

The project README lists Python 3.8 or newer and QEMU, recommending QEMU 1.6 or later. It recommends KVM for a much better experience; KVM requires hardware virtualization or nested virtualization when running inside a virtual machine. Without KVM, QEMU may use software emulation, with substantially different performance. Optional statically linked BusyBox support depends on the selected options, and virtiofsd 1.7.0 or newer is described as an optional way to improve guest filesystem performance. Dependencies and supported versions may change, so verify the current README for your operating system and virtme-ng release.

Filesystem isolation and its limits

In the documented copy-on-write setup, changes made to the guest filesystem do not affect the host filesystem. This isolation makes it practical to try changes in a disposable guest. It is a statement about filesystem behavior in that setup, not a guarantee that every possible host risk is eliminated; virtme-ng is still running virtualization software on the host.

When virtme-ng is—and isn’t—the right test

Use virtme-ng for rapid kernel development checks that benefit from a repeatable virtual boot and test environment. Before treating a result as meaningful, check that the selected configuration includes the features your test exercises. The project labels systemd support experimental and also describes snap support as experimental.

A passing test does not establish behavior that depends on omitted kernel features, a particular physical device, or the target machine’s full hardware and kernel configuration. virtme-ng complements, rather than replaces, integration testing on representative hardware and release validation.

How to judge whether it fits your workflow

For a kernel developer whose main bottleneck is repeatedly preparing a test environment, virtme-ng offers a practical way to streamline iteration. It is less conclusive when the test depends on the complete production configuration or real hardware, and its speed should be assessed on the developer’s own build and virtualization setup.
