When Fatt Coder’s SEO-analysis side project reached the Indie Hackers front page, its multi-step workflow could take up to 45 seconds—longer than the 30-second edge connection cutoff the author encountered. The reported fix was to run the analysis asynchronously with ctx.waitUntil() and have the frontend poll for completion every two seconds. That changed how long the user-facing request had to stay open; it is not evidence that every viral app needs more servers or a rewrite.
Why the request timed out
As described by Fatt Coder in a DEV Community article dated October 6, 2026, the tool took a keyword, scraped the top ten Google results, retrieved Domain Rank values through DataForSEO, and asked an LLM to identify content gaps. The author reported that the full chain could take up to 45 seconds, while Cloudflare and the edge network cut off the connection at 30 seconds. A request that waits for every external call and the model response can therefore outlive the window allowed for that request.

The reported figures describe this project, not a universal Cloudflare limit or a reproduced test. The available article result does not establish the workload’s concurrency, a measured before-and-after latency, or a load-test result.

Instead of making the browser wait for the entire analysis inside one request, the author moved the long-running work into asynchronous processing with ctx.waitUntil(). The frontend then polled every two seconds to learn whether the analysis had completed. The author said the timeout was gone.

That is a useful separation of concerns: the initial interaction need not remain open for the duration of a slow job. But the account does not specify durable job storage, retry behavior, cancellation, or how results are recovered if background work fails. Those are implementation questions to answer for your own workload, not guarantees established by this case.
Choose the intervention that matches the bottleneck
Async processing addresses how long a user-facing request waits; it does not automatically reduce the total compute, external API usage, or cost of the work. Other scaling measures address different constraints. AWS’s stepwise guidance recommends identifying the bottleneck before adding capacity, and describes options such as CDN delivery, caching, read replicas for read-heavy workloads, queues for deferred work, and scaling servers when earlier measures are insufficient. Read replicas can return stale data while replication catches up.

| Option | What it addresses | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous job processing | Long work that need not finish inside the initiating request | Job durability, retries, cancellation, result retrieval, and operational complexity |
| CDN or caching | Repeated delivery of eligible content, potentially avoiding an origin request on a cache hit | Whether content is cacheable and fresh enough; dynamic or personalized work may not benefit |
| Rate limiting | Excessive or abusive requests to costly routes | Limits must fit real clients and traffic; overly strict rules can block legitimate use |
| Added origin capacity | Insufficient compute or serving capacity after other bottlenecks are addressed | Cost and whether the constrained component is actually the origin |
AWS’s 2018 article puts the sequencing principle plainly: “Take things one step at a time when scaling and you may find horizontal scaling isn’t the right choice, after all.” Its service examples are guidance, not a current product checklist or a prescription to adopt a particular stack.

Trace one operation end to end and record how long each stage takes: scraping, external data retrieval, model processing, and any database or result-writing work. Separate time spent waiting on dependencies from time spent using your own compute. This helps distinguish a slow dependency from an overloaded application and shows whether async processing, caching, limits, or added capacity addresses the actual delay.

- Record total duration as well as per-step timing.
- Observe request volume and concurrency during normal and peak periods.
- Track failures and timeouts by route and dependency, rather than treating every failure as a capacity problem.
- After a change, verify completion rates and user-visible wait behavior under representative traffic; do not infer reliability from a single successful request.
Protect expensive endpoints deliberately
Cloudflare’s rate-limiting guidance notes that API requests can put significant strain on an application backend when they are expensive to compute or serve. Its guidance describes rules shaped around the route, HTTP method, and a meaningful client identifier, such as a key, cookie, or request field. Set thresholds from observed traffic and the service’s acceptable behavior, rather than copying an example limit; feature availability can also depend on plan or add-ons.
A CDN helps, but it is not a cure for every outage
A CDN can reduce origin work when it serves eligible content from cache. Cloudflare’s August 22, 2025 incident report explains that cached content can be delivered without contacting the origin, but also documents a traffic surge involving cached objects that saturated links between Cloudflare and AWS us-east-1. Caching can reduce one dependency without removing every network dependency or preventing all failures. A dynamic, personalized, or computationally expensive endpoint may still need application-level changes.

What the viral moment does—and does not—show
The author’s account is a useful example of a slow, multi-service request hitting an execution boundary and being reworked as a background job. It does not establish a quantified post-fix speedup, a capacity figure, or that the application handled 100,000 users. Indie Hackers discussions use questions such as “How to scale my side project to handle 100k users?” and “How to avoid first traffic surge crash”; those are community concerns, not measurements of this project’s traffic.

For a small project, the practical response is to locate the bottleneck, make long work asynchronous when it can safely be deferred, and add traffic controls or capacity only where observations justify them. The right architecture depends on the job’s reliability needs and the system’s measured constraints.
