Vim on a Server: A Quick Start to Editing, Saving, and Quitting

A practical Vim quick start for server terminals: open a file, enter text, make a small change, undo, save, and quit.

To edit a file from a server terminal, run vim filename if Vim is available. Vim starts in Normal mode, where keys issue commands; press i to enter Insert mode and type. When you are done, press Esc, then type :wq and press Enter to save and quit.

How do you open a file with Vim on a server?

At the shell prompt, enter vim filename, replacing filename with the file’s name or path. For example, vim /etc/example.conf opens that path for editing. This is Vim’s documented common way to start editing one file from a terminal. Vim User Manual: The first steps in Vim

If the shell reports that vim is not found, use an editor installed on that system or ask the administrator which editor is available. Do not assume every server has Vim.

What do Vim’s modes mean?

Vim opens in Normal mode. In this mode, keys are commands for moving through and changing text, not characters to insert. To type text, switch to Insert mode. Press Esc to return to Normal mode; do this before entering a command such as save or quit.

How do you move around and make a small edit?

Use the arrow keys to move the cursor. Vim’s basic letter movements are h (left), j (down), k (up), and l (right). To insert text at the cursor, press i, type, and press Esc when finished. To remove a character under the cursor in Normal mode, press x.

For a first edit, keep the sequence simple:

  1. Move to the spot you want to change using the arrow keys or h, j, k, and l.
  2. Press i and type the text you want to add.
  3. Press Esc to return to Normal mode.
  4. If you need to remove a character, place the cursor on it and press x.

How do you undo, save, and quit?

These commands work from Normal mode. If you are typing, press Esc first.

  • u undoes the last change.
  • Ctrl-r redoes a change that you just undid.
  • :w writes (saves) the file and leaves Vim open.
  • :q quits when there are no unsaved changes.
  • :wq saves and quits.

To discard unsaved edits and quit, use :q!. The exclamation mark forces the quit instead of prompting you to save. Type a colon command in Normal mode, then press Enter.

Where can you practice or look up commands?

Vim’s built-in help, interactive tutor, and User Manual each serve a different purpose:

Resource Best for What it offers
:help Looking up a command or topic while Vim is open Extensive, cross-referenced help maintained with Vim. Use a topic after :help, such as :help undo. Vim documentation
Vim tutor Practicing beginner commands interactively The official help file points beginners to the tutor as a short interactive course. Official pages differ on its duration, so there is no single time estimate to rely on. Vim help: About the manuals · Vim README
User Manual Following a guided explanation from basic tasks onward A task-oriented guide that moves from simple to more complex material. Its first-steps chapter covers inserting, moving, deleting, undoing, getting out, and finding help. The first steps in Vim · User Manual contents

The first-steps chapter describes its goal plainly: “This chapter provides just enough information to edit a file with Vim. Not well or fast, but you can edit.” Treat this as a starting lesson, not a full command reference; a little practice makes the basic actions easier to remember.
