A stylized Viking house feels inhabited when its composition, materials, and props suggest a life beyond the frame. For Outstead, her MA final project, 3D environment artist Tulika Roy built around a clear focal point—the house—then used its setting and a few carefully placed objects to imply the story of two former adventurers settling into a quieter life.
Start with a story and a strong silhouette
Roy chose a Viking-house concept by Skylar Zhang because its shape was distinctive, especially the curved roof, yet manageable to reinterpret. She imagined two old friends who had left adventurous lives behind. The environment would hint at their shared past and present routine through objects and placement, rather than making characters the focus.

References helped her make practical choices about proportion, shape, materials, and detail. She gathered both realistic and stylized examples, looking at the overall house and landscape as well as individual props. That distinction matters: a reference can inform believable structure without dictating a realistic finish.

Roy began with a simple blockout in Unreal Engine to check scale and composition. She wanted the house to read first, so the path, fences, and low hills frame it and guide the eye. Open Nordic grassland leaves breathing room around the building; the hills break up the background without turning the setting into a dense forest.

This camera-first approach also helps decide where modeling and texturing effort will matter. Roy placed large elements such as the house and fences first, then considered smaller objects from the main camera view rather than distributing detail evenly across the scene.
Choose the roof method for the shape you need
Roy modeled most assets in Maya and used ZBrush for some finer details. She treated the house as the hero asset and adapted the concept rather than reproducing it unchanged. For the roof, she considered a Substance 3D Designer approach but chose modeled shingles to control their shape and appearance.
She made several shingle variations, then used MASH and a lattice to arrange and shape them across the roof. That choice prioritized direct control over the roof’s silhouette and surface. It is a tradeoff, not a universal rule: a procedural material may suit a different roof or production goal, but Roy wanted the shingles themselves to contribute to the form.

Build a consistent wood treatment, then personalize each asset
Roy’s trim-sheet workflow began as a substantial learning exercise. She learned the basics from a tutorial and combined them with a stylized wooden-plank approach that gave the trim more dimension. She also made a second color variation so wooden objects would not all repeat the same palette.
For the wood, she layered base color, shadows and darker areas, highlights and lighter highlights, then small areas of stronger color. This reflects advice she took from an 80 Level article by Alex Iveroth; it should be understood as Roy’s chosen art approach, not a formal color standard.
She converted the trim-sheet texture folder into a custom Smart Material in Substance 3D Painter. Applying it to pillars, doors, and gables gave those assets a consistent starting treatment and made it easier to reuse the same highlight and shadow colors. The Smart Material did not complete the assets on its own: Roy still painted details specific to each object.

Outside the 3D workflow, Roy used acrylic markers in her free time to explore how colors changed when layered. She described this as a way to better understand color interactions for texturing, not as a tool used to paint the 3D assets.

Roy used Unreal Engine’s Runtime Virtual Texture (RVT) to pass painted landscape color information into the grass material. As a result, grass could take on color variation from the ground beneath it, instead of reading as one flat color everywhere. This reduced the need to create a separate grass material for each landscape area. She added simple wind movement, keeping the motion subtle enough not to compete with the scene.
Foliage was new to her. She created flower base-color and alpha maps in Photoshop and assembled flowers from simple planes in Maya. She used a similar plane-based method for tree leaves. For the tree canopy’s stylized look, she followed a tutorial by Victoria Zavhorodnia and exposed material-instance parameters for adjustment. The interview does not give the tutorial title or technical settings, so those details should not be assumed.

Use props to suggest daily life, not fill empty space
Once the large forms were in place, Roy added smaller objects where they would be visible from the main camera. A bench, barrels, chest, helmet, and similar props make the house feel used and hint at its residents. Their value comes from the story and composition they support, not from maximizing the number of objects.
That restraint complements the open landscape. The house, path, fences, and selected props establish a readable scene, while unfilled areas preserve the quiet atmosphere Roy wanted.
Light for the camera and the intended mood
Roy used Unreal Engine for the final scene and render, with Ultra Dynamic Sky to help establish the sky and overall lighting. She tested lighting arrangements for a peaceful, cozy mood while keeping both the house and smaller details legible. Rather than trying to illuminate every part equally, she judged brightness through the main camera.

What the project’s timeline and challenges show
Roy reported a project duration of around two and a half months while balancing classes, a part-time job, and other commitments. That is her account of this student project, not a general production estimate.
After an unexpected interruption cost her time and confidence, she found that restarting mattered more than waiting to feel ready. As she put it, “One thing I learned from this was that sometimes the hardest part is simply starting.” Foliage was another task she had postponed because it was unfamiliar; once she began, it became one of the most rewarding parts. Her account points to a practical sequence: establish the blockout and priorities, then make a first pass at difficult elements and improve them iteratively.
