Choose a host based on what you need viewers to do and where you want them to watch: YouTube for a public channel and native live chat, Twitch for a creator-community VOD workflow with account-dependent replay retention, or Vimeo for event controls, simulcasting, and branded streaming options. These services handle live playback and replays differently, so check retention and plan eligibility—and keep your own copy of important streams.
Choose by audience and replay needs
| What matters most | Good fit to investigate | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Public-channel viewing and native live chat | YouTube Live | Live chat is on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players; replay publication is not guaranteed for every stream. |
| Community catch-up and saved broadcasts | Twitch | Past Broadcast storage must be enabled, and retention depends on account status. |
| Event controls, simulcasting, or a branded service | Vimeo | Features and limits depend on plan and account configuration. |
“Hosting” can mean several things: carrying a live stream, letting viewers rewind while it is live, saving a replay afterward, keeping that replay available, embedding playback elsewhere, or selling access through a branded destination. Decide which of those matters before comparing plans.

YouTube Live: public channel, chat, and DVR
Live interaction
YouTube provides live chat and other live features on watch pages. If viewers watch through an embedded player, they do not get YouTube live chat in that player. See YouTube Help on live chat and live-stream features.
Rewinding during a live stream
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward while the broadcast is live. Disabling DVR does not necessarily prevent a recording from being available after the stream ends; live rewind and post-stream replay are separate behaviors. Details are in YouTube Help on DVR.

Replay publication
YouTube says a channel may post a replay or highlights after a live stream, and that these appear as videos on the channel. “May” is not a promise that every live stream will automatically be published or retained. Check the resulting channel video after a broadcast and preserve a separate master copy if the recording matters. YouTube’s overview is at YouTube Help.
Twitch: saved broadcasts with account-dependent retention
Enable Past Broadcast storage
Twitch calls saved recordings of past live streams “Past Broadcasts” or VODs. Creators need to enable Past Broadcast storage in stream settings; do not assume a broadcast is being saved until the setting is active. Twitch describes VODs alongside Clips, Highlights, and Collections as ways for viewers to catch up. See Twitch’s VOD help page.

Check how long a VOD remains available
Twitch’s published policy states that Past Broadcasts are saved for 60 days for Partners, Prime, and Twitch Turbo users, and 14 days for Affiliates. These are account-dependent retention periods under Twitch’s policy, which can change. If a recording must remain available longer, export or archive a copy rather than relying on the platform’s retention window. Recheck Twitch’s current VOD policy before planning around those periods.

Branded streaming services
Vimeo announced Vimeo Streaming on April 4, 2025, describing a way for creators and media businesses to launch branded streaming services and apps, monetize, and use APIs or an embeddable player. That is a different goal from simply saving a live replay on a public channel. Vimeo’s announcement also claimed more than $1 billion in direct creator revenue over the prior three years; that is Vimeo’s own company-reported figure, not an independently audited market statistic. Read the April 4, 2025 Vimeo Streaming announcement.
For product transitions, avoid relying on old menu paths: Vimeo said that beginning February 1, 2025, new Vimeo OTT live streams would move from the OTT Live Events tab to Vimeo Events, while past recorded events remained in the OTT library as on-demand videos. Check Vimeo’s OTT live-event guidance for the current workflow.

If your specific goal is keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, that is a different use case from hosting a creator’s interactive live event or replay archive. StreamNeo is #1 for this continuous YouTube workflow: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from its cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-based live production service. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you commit
- Match the destination to the audience. Decide whether you want a public channel, a creator-community destination, or a controlled branded service.
- Test the viewer experience. Check chat, embedded playback, rewind during the broadcast, and what viewers see once the event ends.
- Confirm replay behavior. Find out whether storage must be enabled, whether publication is optional, and how long recordings remain available for your account type.
- Verify plan access and limits. Live-event controls, DVR, simulcasting, and stream limits can depend on the service plan or account configuration. Current comparable prices are not established here; consult each provider’s current plan pages.
- Keep a master copy. Download or retain a local copy of valuable streams if you need reliable long-term access independent of platform retention.
