Audio streaming sends playable sound to your device over an internet connection as you listen. To get started, you need a supported phone, computer, tablet or other player, a streaming app, internet access for live playback, and headphones or speakers. The service’s quality setting, your connection, and the path from your device to your speakers all affect playback, data use, and whether lossless audio reaches your ears intact.
What happens when you press play?
The app obtains audio over your device’s internet connection and prepares incoming sound for playback. That short preparation is called buffering: the player gathers enough audio to help keep playback going while more arrives. If the connection becomes weak or unstable, playback may pause or stutter. Spotify says its app uses some of the device’s bandwidth to play music without buffering and adjusts audio quality by default to help prevent stuttering. Exact delivery systems and buffer sizes vary and are not established here.

What do you need to listen?
- A compatible playback device, such as a phone, tablet, or computer.
- A streaming app or service.
- An internet connection for live listening. Home Wi-Fi can help avoid using mobile data.
- Headphones or speakers, built in or connected to the device.
That is enough for ordinary streaming. Special equipment is only relevant if you specifically want to preserve a lossless playback path.

How quality, compression, and data fit together
Audio codecs encode sound for storage or transmission. Lossy compression reduces the amount of audio data and can reduce file size; lossless compression reduces size while preserving the encoded audio data. A service may offer different formats and quality settings. Apple identifies ALAC as its lossless compression technology; Spotify documents a lossless option up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC.
Spotify’s published settings illustrate one provider’s quality scale—not an industry-wide standard. Spotify Support, accessed October 3, 2026, lists approximate equivalents of 24 kbit/s for Low, 96 kbit/s for Normal, 160 kbit/s for High, and 320 kbit/s for Very High, as well as lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. The service says higher streaming quality uses more data. Its default quality setting adjusts audio quality to help reduce stuttering.

Higher-quality and lossless playback can use significantly more data. Apple says lossless streaming over cellular or Wi-Fi uses significantly more data, and Spotify recommends strong Wi-Fi for lossless streaming. There is no single data-per-hour figure established here that applies to all services and settings, so check your app’s data controls and monitor your own usage if you have a mobile-data limit.
What “lossless” does—and does not—guarantee
Lossless describes how the audio is compressed; it does not guarantee that every link from the service to your ears preserves that quality. Your device, the selected service setting, and the connection to your headphones or speakers all matter. Spotify says connection methods such as Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can affect whether lossless quality is supported. For its smoothest lossless experience, Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers, or a non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect connection. Its September 10, 2025 announcement says Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for its lossless signal to reach the device without compression. Apple likewise identifies a wired connection to headphones, receivers, or powered speakers for lossless playback. These are provider-specific recommendations, not a claim that every device or wireless connection behaves the same way.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Wired headphones compatible with your device are one option if you want to explore lossless playback. Depending on the device and headphones, you may also need a suitable cable or adapter; the right connector depends on your equipment. Wired gear is not required for regular audio streaming.
Nor does a lossless label prove that every listener will hear a difference. The published provider guidance establishes formats, settings, and connection recommendations, not a universal audible benefit.

How to choose a service and setting
- Check the format and availability. Look for the codecs and quality levels offered, whether lossless is included, and whether the option is available for your plan and region.
- Check the whole playback path. Consider your phone or computer, headphones or speakers, and how they connect. A setting offered by a service may not be supported all the way through your equipment.
- Balance data use and reliability. Higher settings use more data. If playback stutters, try a more stable connection or a lower quality setting; if you have a data cap, use Wi-Fi or the service’s available download feature.
- Compare the parts that matter to you. Catalog, price, subscription terms, and offline-download limits vary by service and region. Confirm current details with the provider; a complete service and plan comparison is not established here.
- Choose by listening and circumstances. Use the highest setting that sounds satisfactory and plays reliably on your connection. Do not assume every listener will perceive a difference between lossy and lossless audio.
When a YouTube channel needs to stay live
Music listening in a streaming app is different from keeping a YouTube channel continuously live with prerecorded video. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists as a 24/7 YouTube live stream; it is not a music-listening service and does not stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without leaving a computer or home connection on, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card. To try it, start at StreamNeo’s free trial.

Common playback problems

- Mobile data runs higher than expected: A higher quality setting consumes more data. Check the app’s quality controls, use Wi-Fi where practical, or use offline downloads if your service supports them.
- Lossless is selected but your setup may not support it end to end: Check the provider’s guidance for your playback device and connection type. Bluetooth, wired connections, and network playback can have different limits.
- Offline playback is unavailable: Download support and its terms vary by service. Confirm that your plan, device, and selected content are eligible in the provider’s current information.
