A good video game night starts with the group, not the game library: choose a title that fits your guests, verify its exact player and equipment requirements, and plan how people can join or take turns. Begin with the equipment you already have: a console or PC, a display, the game, enough compatible controllers, and power. Add internet access, accounts, subscriptions, or accessories only if the selected game and mode require them.

Check the specific title and mode rather than assuming the console’s maximum capacity tells you how many people can play. Local play on one screen, a local wireless room, and online play can have different limits and setup steps. Nintendo’s instructions for Mario Party Superstars, for example, distinguish offline play, local rooms, and online play; the host selects the player count and connects controllers, and an online room can use a passcode. Check these details for the exact game and mode
- How many players the mode supports, and whether that count includes the host.
- Whether everyone shares one console and screen or connects separate systems.
- How many controllers are needed, which types are supported, and whether they work with your console generation.
- Whether players need accounts, a subscription, internet access, or another copy of the game.
- How guests join, take turns, or enter a private room.

How many controllers do you need?
Use the player limit and controller instructions for the mode you plan to play—not the number of guests or the console’s theoretical capacity—as your starting point. Then check whether controllers can be shared, whether each player needs a full controller, and whether your available models are compatible. If the game supports fewer active players than you have guests, plan a rotation or teams instead of buying equipment on the assumption that every guest can play at once.
Requirements can also differ within one game. Nintendo describes Everybody 1-2-Switch! as playable in Joy-Con mode for up to 8 players, or in smart-device mode for up to 100 players for certain games. Those are Nintendo’s title-specific published limits, not general party-game capacities. Some games are available in only one mode; Joy-Con play may need extra accessories, while smart-device mode requires a Nintendo Account, a compatible smart device, and internet access. Match the activity to the guests’ ages, experience, group size, and preference for local or online play. For children or a mixed-age group, check the game’s rating and consider its in-game purchases and online communication features.
