Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before using a video doorbell, check what it sees, where it detects motion, whether it captures audio, who can access the account, and how long clips are kept. The controls vary by model, app, subscription, and region, so use the steps below as a checklist and verify the exact behavior in your device’s current settings.
1. Check the camera’s view and set privacy zones
Open live view and inspect the full frame. If the doorbell can see a neighbor’s window, yard, or an area of public space that you do not need to monitor, use a privacy zone to mask it where supported.

Do not assume masking also prevents motion detection. Ring says masked portions are concealed in live view and recordings, but motion may still be detected behind a mask and trigger an event. A camera move can also leave a Ring privacy zone misaligned. Arlo describes privacy zones as masking selected areas in live view and recordings, and distinguishes them from Activity Zones, which control detection areas. See Ring’s privacy feature instructions and Arlo’s Privacy Zones guidance.
2. Limit motion detection and alerts
Set motion or activity zones around the entrance and other areas you genuinely need to monitor. If available, review sensitivity, alert types, and schedules so the doorbell is not prompting you about unnecessary activity.
#1 Best Overall
- AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
A zone is not automatically a guarantee that activity elsewhere in the image is never processed. Google Nest says, “Activity Zones can help determine when your camera records something.” Its guidance also notes that an object partly inside a selected zone may be recorded. Check what your specific model’s zones control: recording, alerts, or both. See Google Nest’s Activity Zones guidance.
3. Decide whether the doorbell needs audio
Check separately whether microphone audio is streamed and whether sound is saved with event recordings. Turn off audio capture if you do not need it, and decide whether you still want two-way talk.

- Video Doorbell Camera for Complete Front Door and Entryway Protection: Monitor your front door with 2K video, person recognition, package detection, two-way audio, and IP65 weather resistance. Wired or wireless installation options.
- Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.
- Smart Alerts That Keep You Informed: Get notifications for package and pet detection, along with person and vehicle recognition. Intelligent detection helps reduce false alerts and keeps you connected wherever you are.
- Only Get Alerts That Matter: Set custom activity zones to monitor areas like your front door and pathway, and use privacy zones to block sensitive spaces while reducing unnecessary motion alerts for more meaningful notifications.
- Flexible Power for Easy Installation: Choose a wire-free setup with a rechargeable doorbell or hardwire to existing wiring for trickle charging and uninterrupted security.
For Ring, the current app instructions place the Audio Streaming and Recording control under the device’s Privacy Settings. Ring says this control requires a compatible subscription; supported devices can use “Activate Once” for temporary two-way talk. That menu and subscription condition apply to Ring, not every brand. Consult Ring’s instructions or your manufacturer’s current help page.
4. Secure the account and review who has access
- Use a unique password for the doorbell account.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever it is offered. Ring says two-factor authentication is required for all Ring accounts.
- Review shared users and household access, and remove people who no longer need it.
- Check the mobile app’s permissions and privacy settings as well as the doorbell’s own settings. The FTC recommends reviewing camera-app privacy settings and permissions in its consumer guidance on securing home security cameras.
These steps reduce avoidable exposure; they cannot guarantee that a cloud-connected device will never be compromised. Ring’s account and privacy information is at Ring Privacy.

5. Find out whether clips are saved, and for how long
Check whether your doorbell only streams live video, saves event clips, or offers a continuous recording option. Then review the plan tied to your account, the retention period, and how to delete recordings. Storage rules are service-specific and can change; the following examples are not industry-wide defaults.
| Service example | Recording and retention details |
|---|---|
| Ring | Ring says devices without a Protect plan do not record or store videos. Eligible motion-event videos for Protect plan holders, including free trials, can be stored for up to 180 days, depending on settings. A change to the retention duration applies to future recordings; it does not retroactively change existing clips. |
| Google Nest | Google says recordings are kept for the duration of the selected recording subscription period; the period varies by service. |
Before relying on a particular duration, verify your model, plan, settings, and country in Ring’s privacy information or Google Nest’s privacy and recording information.

- AI Detection Precision: Advanced AI intelligently identifies humans while filtering out unnecessary motion alerts.
- Clear Night Vision: Equipped with four IR LEDs, the camera captures detailed footage even in darkness.
- Two-Way Audio Support: Communicate with anyone at your door from anywhere using your smartphone.
- Real-Time Alerts: Be notified instantly when motion is detected or someone rings the bell.
- Encrypted Cloud Storage: Safely store your recordings with AES-128 encryption. With a cloud subscription, you can live view, save, and replay recorded videos. Without a cloud subscription, core features such as two-way audio, human detection, and real-time notifications remain available.
6. Treat familiar-face detection as an opt-in choice
If your doorbell offers face recognition or familiar-face detection, decide whether the feature is worth creating and maintaining a face library. Google documents familiar-face detection for eligible Nest setups; some related data may be handled on the device and some through Nest Aware. Availability and behavior depend on device, subscription, and region. If you do not need the feature, leave it off. Review the feature and its controls in Google Nest’s familiar-face detection guidance.

7. Recheck settings after changes
Revisit framing, privacy and motion zones, account users, alerts, and retention after you move the doorbell, change its angle, alter household access, replace network equipment, or update its software. In particular, inspect the live view after moving the camera: Ring warns that a moved device can cause a privacy zone to miss the intended area.
What to compare across doorbells
If you are choosing between devices, compare the actual privacy controls for the model and plan you expect to use—not just whether the product advertises “privacy zones.” Check these differences before deciding:
- Whether masking affects live view, recordings, thumbnails, and notifications.
- Whether motion can still trigger an event behind a privacy mask.
- Whether activity zones control detection, recording, alerts, or some combination.
- Whether audio streaming and audio recording can be disabled separately from two-way talk.
- What account protections and shared-user controls are available.
- Whether event or continuous recording requires a subscription, and how long clips are retained.
- Whether face recognition or similar enhanced detection is optional, and how its data is handled.
These distinctions matter because privacy masks, detection zones, account access, and cloud retention solve different problems. FTC’s May 2023 announcement about Ring described allegations involving employee surveillance and account-security failures, alongside a proposed order. That statement concerned the Ring matter and was not a finding about every brand or a description of current practices across the industry. See the FTC’s May 2023 announcement.
