If a UFC title fight ends in a draw, neither fighter wins; in documented UFC cases, the champion kept the belt. A no contest is a separate result that records no winner or loser, and documented UFC cases also show the champion retaining or being reinstated. But title retention should not be treated as an automatic rule for every possible case: the circumstances, commission ruling and UFC’s title decision matter.
Draw and no contest are different results
| Question | Draw | No contest |
|---|---|---|
| How does it happen? | Judges’ scores do not produce one winner. The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC) rules recognize unanimous, majority and split draws. | The bout is officially recorded without a winner or loser. One possible cause is an early stoppage for accidental injury before enough of the fight has elapsed to reach a scorecard decision; a commission can also change a result after review. |
| Is either fighter given a win? | No. A draw has no winner. | No. A no contest is neither a win nor a loss. |
| Does the champion keep the belt? | UFC’s Mason Fowler title-fight report records the champion retaining after a split draw. | UFC records show title retention or reinstatement in specific cases, but the outcome depends on the case. |
The ABC’s Unified Rules of MMA (August 2025) distinguish the scoring outcomes from a no contest. UFC’s Introduction to MMA also explains a draw as an outcome in which judges do not award the bout to either fighter.

Does the champion keep the belt after a draw?
In a documented UFC example, yes. At UFC BJJ 11, Mason Fowler retained the light heavyweight title after his bout with Nick Rodriguez was ruled a split draw, according to UFC’s event results. That establishes what happened in that bout; it does not by itself establish an exceptionless rule for every UFC title or every circumstance.
What happens to the title after a no contest?
There is no winner from whom the belt must automatically transfer. UFC examples show an incumbent retaining or being reinstated, but those examples turn on their specific circumstances and official decisions.

UFC 321: Aspinall retained at the time
UFC’s Tom Aspinall profile records that his bout with Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 was ruled a no contest after an accidental eye poke, and that Aspinall retained the heavyweight title at that time. The profile also records that he later vacated the title, so retention describes the immediate outcome of that bout, not his current championship status.
UFC 214: a commission changed the result
After UFC 214, the California State Athletic Commission overturned Jon Jones’s win over Daniel Cormier to a no contest in connection with a potential anti-doping policy violation. UFC announced on September 13, 2017: “As this was a title bout, Cormier will be reinstated as UFC light heavyweight champion.” The UFC statement illustrates that a result and title status can change after an event through regulatory review and UFC’s response.
Post-event review is not limited to title bouts: UFC reported that Pennsylvania’s commission reviewed Charles Oliveira versus Nik Lentz and changed the result to a no contest after an illegal knee (UFC’s report).

Yes. An accidental foul does not automatically make a fight a no contest. Under the ABC framework, an early stoppage before enough of the bout has elapsed to score can produce a no contest; after a qualifying later stoppage, the scorecards may instead produce a technical decision if a fighter is ahead. The applicable rules and commission’s ruling determine how a particular bout is classified.
Does a no contest count as a loss in UFC?
No. A no contest is not recorded as a win or a loss for either fighter. It is also not another name for a draw: a draw comes from the judges’ scoring, while a no contest is a distinct official classification.
