This is a common starting point—not a proven universal optimum. Follow the instructions for your exact model and adjust the camera angle if your stairs, approach, wiring or nearby wall changes what it can see.
What mounting height do manufacturers recommend?
Recommendations vary by model and manufacturer. The figures below are installation guidance, not results from controlled tests comparing doorbells.

How to choose and verify the mounting position
- Check the exact model’s manual. If it agrees, use roughly 4 feet (1.2 metres) as your initial target. Measure from the ground to the mounting position.
- Preview the view before drilling. Hold or temporarily position the doorbell and inspect its live view. Look for the visitor’s face, the doorstep or package area, and the part of the approach where you want motion alerts. Google advises checking for obstructions and reviewing live or recorded video; eufy also recommends checking live view before choosing a location.
- Clear the intended scene. Keep plants, decorations and other objects from blocking the view. A nearby side wall in the frame can reflect infrared light and blur night vision on the cited eufy model, according to eufy’s positioning guidance.
- Correct the angle if needed. If wiring fixes the doorbell higher than the target, or stairs, siding, a path or an adjacent wall make the view poor, consider a compatible wedge or corner mount. Ring describes these accessories for vertical or horizontal correction. The E340 guide specifies a 15-degree wedge. Check model compatibility and whether the hardware is already included before buying.
- Review real event clips after installation. If alerts miss the area you care about, first correct the framing and then review the detection settings available for your model. Google notes that motion in obstructed areas will not generate alerts.
Adjust for stairs, high wiring and nearby walls
If the existing wiring is above 4 feet
You may not need to relocate the wiring. If the exact model’s instructions allow it, use a compatible angled wedge to point the camera down toward the approach and doorstep. Ring specifically recommends a wedge when wiring is higher than its suggested height; confirm the advice against your own model’s manual.

If the door opens onto stairs or a raised landing
Preview the camera from the intended mounting position and adjust its vertical angle so the relevant approach and doorstep stay in frame. Ring identifies stairs and elevation changes as situations where a wedge may help. A 4-foot measurement alone cannot account for the height of your landing or the direction people approach from.
If a side wall is close to the doorbell
Try to keep the nearby wall out of the camera’s frame if the layout allows. eufy warns that, for its cited positioning guidance, a side wall in view can reflect infrared light and blur night vision.

Is 5 feet too high?
Not necessarily. The cited sources establish no universal cutoff: Swann’s suggested range reaches 5.2 feet, while several other manufacturers recommend about 4 feet. Follow your model’s instructions, then judge the framing with live view and recorded clips. If a higher position leaves the doorstep or approach poorly framed, correct the angle with compatible hardware where the manual permits.

Why height alone cannot guarantee motion alerts
Mounting height is only one part of placement. Field of view, camera angle, obstructions and device-specific detection behavior also affect what the doorbell can capture and alert on. The manufacturer recommendations cited here are not comparative detection tests, so a particular height should not be treated as a guarantee against missed alerts. For example, Reolink’s guidance discusses side-to-side sensitivity in a broader section about its battery cameras’ PIR sensors; that statement should not be generalized to every video doorbell.
