A codec compresses and decodes video; a streaming protocol is the route that carries it to a platform. The right codec therefore depends on what your destination accepts through your chosen ingest protocol, as well as your latency, resolution, and HDR needs. For YouTube, Google currently lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS, H.264 or HEVC for HLS, and H.264 or VP9 for DASH.
Codec vs. streaming protocol: what’s the difference?
A codec is a method for encoding and decoding media. H.264, HEVC, and VP9 are video codecs; AAC is an audio codec. A protocol describes how a stream is delivered or ingested. A platform’s protocol determines which codecs it accepts on that route, so a codec choice cannot be made in isolation.
Codec names may also appear as identifiers in a playlist or manifest. The IETF HLS specification, for example, shows mp4a.40.2,avc1.4d401e for AAC-LC audio with H.264 Main Profile Level 3.0 video. These identifiers describe formats carried in the stream; they are not themselves a different codec choice.
YouTube Live codec support by ingest protocol
Google’s YouTube Live comparison lists the following combinations. This is a YouTube-specific matrix, not a universal compatibility guide for other streaming services.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingest protocol | Video codecs listed | Security and latency notes |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | H.264 | Unencrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| RTMPS | H.264 | Encrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Google describes RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. |
| HLS | H.264, HEVC | Encrypted; supports HDR, but is not suited to ultra-low latency. |
| DASH | H.264, VP9 | Encrypted; not suited to ultra-low latency. |
Google describes RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. HLS and DASH are segment-based and typically incur greater latency. The trade-off matters: a codec option available on one route may not be available on another, and a higher-latency route may not suit an interactive stream.
How to choose a codec for your stream
Start with the destination and ingest route
Check the current requirements for the platform and the specific ingest protocol you intend to use. For YouTube, use the matrix above as your starting point. Do not assume that its support for HEVC or VP9 carries over to another service.

Match the route to your latency target
For YouTube streams that need normal, low, or ultra-low latency, Google lists H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube HLS and DASH are not suited to ultra-low latency. If the event depends on fast audience interaction, account for the route’s latency before selecting an otherwise attractive codec.
Consider resolution and HDR requirements
YouTube lists HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH, and its HLS workflow supports HDR when using HEVC. That makes those routes relevant to some high-resolution or HDR workflows, but the codec label alone does not guarantee better results. Verify that the entire encoder-to-platform setup supports the format and that the latency trade-off works for the event.

Verify the encoder and playback chain
Confirm that your encoder can output the codec and settings required by the selected route, including any hardware-encoding option you plan to use. Also consider whether the devices receiving the stream support the format. Compatibility and encoding performance vary by implementation; there is no universal codec ranking that settles those questions for every setup.
YouTube HLS: format and HDR requirements
YouTube’s HLS ingest workflow has specific requirements beyond choosing H.264 or HEVC. Google’s HLS guide specifies:

For YouTube HLS, Google recommends media segments of one to four seconds and sets a five-second maximum. Shorter segments can reduce latency, but may increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency. This is a segment-duration trade-off for HLS, not evidence that one codec is better than another.
Google characterizes HLS ingestion as a choice for premium content that needs high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency. Apply that guidance to this YouTube HLS workflow, rather than treating it as a general recommendation for every platform or stream.

Common codec-selection problems and fixes
- Your encoder does not offer the codec: Check the selected ingest protocol and encoder configuration. YouTube’s listed combinations differ by protocol; for example, its RTMP and RTMPS rows list H.264, not HEVC or VP9.
- The platform rejects the stream: Recheck the destination’s current ingest requirements and confirm the codec is accepted on the chosen route. Do not rely on a platform’s support for a codec over a different protocol.
- An HLS stream is rejected: Check M2TS muxing, single-track AAC audio, the closed-GOP requirement, and the 60 fps ceiling, as well as the video codec. For HDR, verify HEVC and the specified color format requirements.
- Latency is too high: Reconsider whether a segment-based HLS or DASH route suits the event. For YouTube, Google lists RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for ultra-low latency; HLS and DASH are not.
- Viewers cannot play the stream reliably: Check the receiving-device and playback support for the format in use. The YouTube protocol comparison does not establish universal compatibility across all devices.
