Streaming alone does not guarantee growth: rights costs, audience size, territory, production quality and reliable delivery all shape the result.
Why streaming belongs beside, not automatically instead of, broadcast
Linear television and streaming can reach different or overlapping audiences. Nielsen’s 2026 guide describes complementary audience profiles and recommends unified multi-platform planning. The practical implication is to distribute where rights permit and where the target audience is—not to put every event on every service by default.

Nielsen reported that sports events represented 29% of all ad-supported viewing in Q4 2025. That figure is a share of ad-supported viewing, not a measure of sports streaming alone. The same guide reported an 18% increase in NBA 2025–26 season viewership through January 2026, and counted 220 sports-related FAST channels, making sports the second-largest FAST genre. These are dated market indicators, not forecasts or guarantees for an individual league or event.
Streaming can add distribution choices: a league may use a broadcaster for broad reach, a direct service for a specific audience, a free ad-supported channel for discovery, or a mix shaped by its rights agreements. Assess whether each outlet adds viewers or simply moves existing viewers between platforms.

Make access and viewing straightforward
More destinations can mean more friction. In a June 2026 survey of 20,589 adults across 12 countries, commissioned by IBM and conducted by Morning Consult, 30% of surveyed fans were most likely to use subscription streaming for live sports, while 29% selected linear broadcast. The same survey found that 39% were frustrated by managing multiple sports subscriptions; among Gen Z respondents, the figure was 46% (IBM / Morning Consult).
Those findings point to a product and distribution challenge rather than a single technical fix. Make schedules easy to find, explain access and billing plainly, keep navigation consistent, and ensure scores and event information are accurate. Avoid making fans guess which service carries a match or whether access is included in an existing plan. The survey describes reported preferences and frustrations; it does not establish that any one design choice causes retention.
Reliability is equally consequential. A stream that stalls during a key play undermines the value of the event and can weaken the ad or subscription experience. Plan production, encoding, delivery capacity, monitoring and support for the scale and latency the event requires. Test the entire path—from venue feed to viewer playback—before selling inventory or promising access.

Give fans reasons to participate during the event
The live picture is only one part of a sports experience. Real-time scores, match information, live statistics and analytics can help fans follow play, while social features and app interactions can make the event more participatory. IBM’s commissioned June 2026 survey found that 30% of surveyed sports-app users said they used live statistics and analytics more than they had one to two years earlier. The result indicates reported change among app users, not a causal link between statistics and retention.

There is also activity around the event beyond viewing. In the same survey, 33% of surveyed sports-app users said they had bought tickets through a sports app during the prior year, 30% ordered food or beverages at an event, and 29% bought merchandise through an app. Disney Advertising’s Sports Unleashed page reports that 69% of sports streamers agreed streaming changed how they watched sports and 76% reported at least one digital activity while watching games; the page does not state a publication date. Together, these findings show opportunities to support participation and commerce, not proof that adding an app feature will increase sales.
Choose features that fit the sport and audience: live stats may serve a data-oriented fan base; ticketing and venue food ordering matter most when viewers can attend in person; merchandise links may fit a club with a strong identity. Rights, user consent, accessibility and the distraction cost of overlays or notifications should shape implementation.
Choose a monetization model that fits the rights
Sports operators can combine several revenue approaches, but each depends on the content rights, territory, audience scale and viewing experience. A model that works for a large recurring competition may not suit a small, occasional event.
| Model | How it can earn | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising | Sell ads around or within the stream, with inventory scaled to eligible audience reach and delivery. | Define ad load, placement, measurement and reporting. Interruptions can damage viewing if poorly timed; inventory value depends on actual audience and delivery. |
| Sponsorship | Sell association with the event through branded segments, overlays or other placements. | Set deliverables and exposure measurement before sale. Confirm that placements comply with rights and sponsorship agreements. |
| Subscription | Charge recurring fees for access to a service or package of events. | Clear access, billing and a compelling slate matter, especially when fans already manage multiple subscriptions. |
| Pay-per-view or event access | Charge for a particular event or a defined package. | Communicate price and access conditions before purchase; estimate likely demand against rights, production and delivery costs. |
| Highlights and replays | Monetize on-demand content through ads, sponsorship or paid access where rights allow. | Check replay, clip and territory rights separately. Fast availability and easy discovery can help fans return after the live event. |
These formats are available approaches, not guaranteed profit formulas. Dolby OptiView describes non-intrusive ad formats, sponsorship overlays and replay monetization (Dolby OptiView); Joymo and Pixellot describe sports-focused services with multiple monetization modes (Joymo; Pixellot). These are vendors’ descriptions of product capabilities, not independent evidence that those capabilities produce a particular business outcome.

Commercial scale should be assessed against real operating economics. For example, Fubo’s 2024 Form 10-K reported advertising revenue of approximately $115.2 million in 2024 and $115.4 million in 2023 (Fubo’s filing). That is a company-specific result, not an industry benchmark or a forecast for a league, club or smaller operator.
Plan sponsor inventory and measurement before launch
Set measurement definitions before promising sponsor exposure. Agree on what counts as a delivered impression, how viewability or completion will be reported, what territories are included, and how results will be reconciled across platforms. Separate audience reach from commercial outcomes: a larger audience does not automatically mean more revenue if the rights, ad load or costs do not support it.
- Audience: unique reach and viewing by platform, territory and event.
- Engagement: watch time, return behavior, use of live features and replay consumption.
- Subscriptions and access: conversion, renewals, churn and event-purchase completion.
- Advertising: delivered inventory, completion and other agreed campaign measures.
- Sponsorship: placement delivery, exposure and post-event reporting.
- Economics: revenue after rights, production, platform, delivery and support costs.
Fubo says it uses engagement and content-consumption data to inform merchandising, advertising, retention and content decisions in its 2024 filing. LIGR describes event-linked sponsor placements and post-broadcast reporting (LIGR). These examples illustrate measurement and activation capabilities; they do not establish a universal measurement standard or prove a return.

- Reach: Which audience can each outlet address, and how much incremental reach is plausible rather than duplicated?
- Rights and territory: Are live, replay, highlight and commercial rights available for the relevant locations and windows?
- Revenue flexibility: Does the approach support the intended mix of ads, sponsorship, subscriptions, event sales or replay revenue?
- Viewing quality: What interruption level, latency, accessibility and playback reliability can the operation support?
- Measurement: Can audience, ad delivery and sponsor reporting be defined and compared consistently?
- Operating scale: What production staff, latency, delivery capacity, support and contingency arrangements are needed?
There is no evidence-based universal winner: the right combination depends on the rights package, geography, expected audience and operating budget. Vendors such as Joymo, Pixellot, Dolby OptiView and LIGR describe relevant sports OTT, ad and sponsorship capabilities, but their product pages should be read as vendor claims rather than independent outcome comparisons.
Build a practical growth plan
- Map rights first. List live, replay, highlight, territory, platform and sponsorship restrictions. Resolve conflicts before choosing distribution or selling access.
- Identify the audience and unmet need. Establish who the event is for, where those fans currently watch, and whether the priority is new reach, easier access, deeper engagement or revenue.
- Choose a distribution mix. Use linear and streaming in complementary ways where rights and economics permit. Define what each outlet is expected to add.
- Design the experience. Make schedules, access, billing and live information easy to understand. Add only the live features and transactions that suit the sport and audience.
- Select revenue models deliberately. Estimate rights, production and delivery costs alongside likely audience and revenue; do not rely on vendor feature lists as profitability evidence.
- Set metrics and sponsor terms. Agree on measurement definitions, reporting cadence and post-event delivery before commitments are made.
- Test and refine. Rehearse the stream and support workflow, measure audience and commercial outcomes, then adjust distribution, features and monetization based on results.
What this means for a club producing its own stream
A club or rights-holder creating its own feed needs a production path that can deliver a stable stream to the chosen service. A live streaming video encoder may be part of that setup; it is not a universal requirement. OTTEngine lists RTMP ingest from hardware encoders among its platform features (OTTEngine). Choose equipment and workflow against the event’s production needs, platform requirements and support capacity rather than assuming every operator needs a particular device.
