Choose a live-stream bitrate from the destination platform’s current recommendation for your exact resolution, frame rate and video codec. Then confirm your internet connection can sustain it and test with representative content before going live. There is no single best bitrate for every stream: platform guidance differs, and an incoming stream’s bitrate is not the same thing as a platform’s viewer-facing output bitrate.
What bitrate means for a live stream
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can preserve more image detail, particularly in fast or complex motion, but it also requires more upload capacity and does not by itself guarantee a better-looking stream. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder settings, connection stability and the destination platform all matter.

Use a platform’s ingest recommendation for the stream you are sending—not a figure for a different service or a transcoded rendition intended for viewers. YouTube, for example, receives an encoder feed and transcodes it into multiple output formats; its bitrate table describes the incoming stream.

| 360p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps |
These recommendations apply to YouTube Live ingest, not a guarantee of a particular viewer playback quality. Use the column matching the codec you actually send; do not carry an H.264 value over to H.265 or AV1 by assumption. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as supported video codecs, up to 60 fps.
Other encoder settings YouTube specifies
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
Check YouTube’s live encoder settings when configuring your software, since platform guidance can change.

How to choose and test your bitrate
- Choose the destination first. Find the current live-encoder guidance for the service you will stream to. Do not combine one platform’s resolution or codec assumptions with another platform’s bitrate numbers.
- Set resolution and frame rate for the content. Higher resolution generally calls for a higher bitrate. A higher frame rate also adds encoding workload. Choose a mode your source, encoder and audience connection can reasonably support.
- Match the codec. Select the recommendation for H.264, H.265 or AV1 as applicable. A codec’s efficiency does not make another codec’s listed bitrate interchangeable.
- Check real upload performance. Run an upload speed test on the connection and setup you will use. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” There is no universal upload-headroom percentage established by the cited guidance, so avoid treating a fixed margin as a rule.
- Test before the event. Use audio and movement similar to the actual stream. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Monitor stream health during the test and while live, and lower the selected mode if the connection cannot sustain it reliably.
Why platform bitrate figures are not interchangeable
YouTube Live: encoder ingest
YouTube’s table above covers the signal your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the incoming stream into multiple viewer output formats. That means the ingest bitrate should not be presented as a bitrate every viewer receives.
Twitch: use Twitch’s own broadcaster guidance
Twitch’s official broadcasting-guidelines result defines ingest bitrate as the data sent to Twitch and notes that higher resolution requires higher bitrate, while a higher frame rate requires more encoding power. A current numeric ceiling and full current codec rules are not established here, so check Twitch’s own broadcasting guidelines rather than borrowing YouTube’s numbers. Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting material also describes multiple client-side encodes and 2K streaming, with bitrate varying across renditions; confirm current availability and configuration on its official Enhanced Broadcasting page.

Google Cloud Live Stream API: input versus output
Google Cloud publishes separate recommendations for API input and output ladder renditions. Its Live Stream API best-practices page was updated September 24, 2026. The following figures are Google Cloud API guidance, not consumer platform limits:
| API signal or rendition | Video mode | H.264 | H.265 |

| Input recommendation | 720p25/30 | 8 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| Input recommendation | 720p50/60 | 15 Mbps | 13.5 Mbps |
| Input recommendation | 1080p50/60 | 20 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| Input recommendation | 2160p50/60 | 50 Mbps | 37.5 Mbps |
| Output ladder | 1080p25/30 | 6 Mbps | not stated |
| Output ladder | 1080p50/60 | 9 Mbps | not stated |
| Output ladder | 2160p25/30 | 15 Mbps | not stated |

Troubleshoot bitrate problems
- Stream drops, buffers or reports unstable health: The selected bitrate may exceed what the real upload connection can sustain consistently. Repeat the upload test on the streaming setup, then lower bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate and test again.
- Picture looks soft or breaks up during motion: Confirm the encoder is using the correct resolution, frame rate and codec recommendation for the destination. Test with motion like the actual program; a static test image may not reveal how the stream behaves in action.
- Encoder settings are rejected or differ from the platform’s expected mode: Verify the selected ingest protocol, codec, frame rate, CBR setting and keyframe interval against the destination’s current encoder page. For YouTube, use RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codec, CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds recommended, no more than four.
- Comparisons show contradictory bitrate numbers: Check whether the number is for a platform ingest signal, a cloud API input, or a transcoded output rendition. Those figures answer different questions and should not be substituted for each other.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
