The City of Vicksburg, Mississippi, says a ransomware incident temporarily shut down its computer systems. In an October 1, 2026 notice, the city said 911, police, fire and utility services remained operational, but in-person utility payments could be delayed. The city has not published a restoration timetable or determined whether personal or confidential information was compromised.
What happened in Vicksburg?
The city identified the incident as ransomware and said it activated its response protocols. It is working with external cybersecurity specialists and other partners to investigate and restore systems securely. The public notice does not say when the intrusion began or when systems are expected to return.

Are 911, police, fire and utility services still operating?
Yes. The city said critical services—including 911, police, fire and utility services—were not affected and remained operational. The computer-system shutdown should not be confused with a reported interruption to those services.

Can residents pay utility bills, and will late fees apply?
Residents trying to pay utility bills in person may encounter delays. The city said it would not impose penalties or terminate services while its system is offline. Its notice does not specify which alternative payment methods are available, so check current city updates before attempting to pay another way.

Was personal information exposed?
That has not been determined. The city is investigating whether personal or confidential information connected to current or former customers, contractors, vendors, employees or affiliated business partners was accessed or acquired without authorization. Mayor Willis Thompson said in a statement quoted by WLBT: “At this time, the investigation is ongoing, and the City has not reached a final determination regarding what information, if any, may have been accessed or acquired without authorization.”
The city said it would contact affected people and provide protective resources if it establishes that information was compromised. At this stage, the city has not confirmed a data breach.

When will the computer systems be restored?
The city has not provided an estimated restoration time. It says it is working to restore systems securely, but the incident notice does not explain how long the shutdown will last. The available reporting also does not establish the initial access method, identify a responsible group, or say whether a ransom demand was made.
For updates on service and payment arrangements, refer to the city’s current public notices rather than relying on an assumed restoration date or unconfirmed payment instructions.
