They are not two cleanly opposed coding methods. “Prompt-driven” describes how you communicate with an AI; “vibe coding” can mean anything from that broad conversational workflow to a narrower practice of accepting generated code without reading it. The more useful questions are how much context you provide, whether you inspect changes, and how rigorously you check the result.
What do “vibe coding” and “prompt-driven coding” mean?
Andrej Karpathy introduced “vibe coding” in February 2025 as a deliberately loose approach: describe what you want, run the AI-generated code, and keep prompting based on what happens, without necessarily reading the code itself. Martin Fowler uses the term in this narrower sense and distinguishes it from “agentic programming,” where AI generates code but a person reviews its structure and remains responsible for it. Fowler reproduces Karpathy’s description: “There’s a new kind of coding I call ‘vibe coding’, where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists.” Martin Fowler’s May 2026 analysis

Other sources use the label more broadly. Google Cloud and IBM describe conversational AI-assisted development that can include testing and review. That broader usage overlaps with practices Fowler would distinguish from vibe coding. The term therefore depends on who is using it.

“Prompt-driven coding” is not a precise counterpart. It generally describes giving an AI instructions and iterating on its output, but says nothing by itself about whether you read the code, provide repository context, run tests, or delegate a larger engineering workflow. IBM describes a progression from prompts toward supplying context and intent and orchestrating work. IBM’s explanation of vibe coding

What is the practical difference?
Rather than treating the labels as a yes-or-no choice, compare the actual workflow along these dimensions. They are useful questions, not a formally validated taxonomy.
| Dimension | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Code oversight | Do you accept generated code without inspecting it, or review the code and its changes? |
| Context | Does the AI receive only a short request, or relevant requirements, constraints, architecture, and repository conventions? |
| Scope | Are you making a disposable prototype, or building software intended for wider use? |
| Validation | Are you checking only whether the result appears to work, or also testing correctness, security, maintainability, and operational needs? |
| Cost of failure | What users, data, or systems could be affected if the code is wrong? |
A short conversational loop might be: describe a goal, generate code, run it, observe the result, give feedback, and repeat. Google Cloud describes this code-level cycle as well as a wider lifecycle that can extend from ideation and generation through validation and deployment. IBM likewise emphasizes iteration—state intent, generate, review, and refine—and the importance of context. Prompting is one part of the work, not a full description of the engineering process. Does AI coding make developers more productive?
There is no sound basis for a universal claim that AI coding makes every developer faster. A review preprint dated August 20, 2026, submitted to IEEE for possible publication, reports results that vary by study design and measure: a peer-reviewed field experiment found 26% more tasks per week; an independent randomized trial reported a 19% slowdown; and team-level telemetry showed 441% more time spent on code review. These are separate findings, not estimates to average into one productivity figure. The review points to differences in tasks, measurement methods, and time horizons as reasons results may diverge. The review preprint
Capability measures are not the same as workplace productivity. The Associated Press reported that Stanford researchers found AI tools solved nearly 72% of coding problems in 2024, up from just over 4% in 2023. That reported figure concerns solving coding problems; it does not establish that professional developers completed work faster. Associated Press report, September 29, 2025

A small qualitative study based on more than eight hours of recorded vibe-coding sessions observed participants switching among prompting, quick evaluation, application testing, and manual editing. Its authors argue that expertise is redistributed toward managing context and evaluating results rather than eliminated. The study describes observed behavior; it is not a broad productivity estimate. The recorded-session study
When is vibe coding appropriate, and when should you review the code?
Rapid prompting can be useful for exploring an idea or building disposable software. Fowler quotes Karpathy on that kind of use: “It’s not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing.” A prototype that runs is not evidence that it is secure, maintainable, or ready for production.

As the consequences of failure rise, so should the level of oversight. Software that handles sensitive information, serves many users, or is difficult to repair calls for careful code review and established engineering checks. IBM says production code still needs review, testing, dependency checking, security assessment, and compliance checks. Google Cloud also distinguishes exploratory use from responsible AI-assisted development in which the person reviews and tests the output and owns the final product. Fowler on risks and appropriate use
Before relying on generated code
- Provide relevant requirements, constraints, and project conventions, not just the desired visible outcome.
- Inspect generated changes so you can identify unintended behavior and understand what you will maintain.
- Run tests appropriate to the software and check dependencies, security, and compliance where relevant.
- Consider who or what could be affected by an error, and scale review accordingly.
Why the debate feels outdated
The labels bundle together several independent choices: how a developer talks to an AI, what context the AI receives, how much code the developer reviews, and how the result is validated. Someone can work conversationally while carefully reviewing every change; someone else can give detailed prompts and still accept unexamined output. Describing the workflow by those choices is more informative than arguing over which label applies.
