Vibe coding can get an idea into a runnable demo quickly. That demo shows that a particular path can work; it does not show that the application is ready for real users, real data, failures, or ongoing change. The Topgolf-to-Torrey Pines metaphor captures the gap: exploration can be accessible and rewarding, while production demands a much tougher standard of preparation and care.
What the golf metaphor means for software
Topgolf suggests an approachable, guided experience with immediate feedback. In a vibe-coding loop, someone describes an idea in natural language, an AI coding tool generates or changes code, and the person runs it and adjusts the prompt. A visible result can arrive quickly, making the approach useful for exploration and prototypes.

Torrey Pines stands for the more demanding work of serving people reliably. Production software has to behave acceptably beyond the creator’s demonstration: under relevant edge cases, misuse, failures, security threats, and future changes. The golf comparison is a metaphor, not a measurement of software quality.
A research review describes vibe coding as AI-assisted development in which a developer expresses intent in natural language and validates generated code by running it rather than reading it. The review emphasizes that findings vary by task and measurement method; it describes uneven capabilities, including stronger code generation than fault detection and documentation auditability. That is the review’s synthesis, not a rule for every model, developer, or application. Read the review on arXiv.

Can vibe coding produce production-grade software?
It can contribute to software that eventually serves production, but the method itself does not certify readiness. A successful demo is evidence that some intended behavior ran in the demonstrated conditions. It is not evidence that the implementation is correct across relevant cases, secure, reliable under expected operating conditions, or maintainable by a team.
There is no universal production-grade threshold. Thoughtworks explicitly notes that “production-grade is not a universally defined term.” The right bar depends on the application’s users, data, service expectations, and the consequences of failure. A disposable internal experiment and a service handling sensitive information should not be judged by the same risk tolerance. Thoughtworks’ account of its experiments and framing illustrates why functionality alone is not the whole question: its freeform System Update Planner experiment focused on functionality and said little about structure, while other experiments deliberately specified design heuristics, modularity, and testability and used continuous feedback. These practitioner experiments are examples, not broad statistical proof about AI-generated software.

Why a persuasive demo is not a production test
| Prototype loop | Production service |
|---|---|
| Optimize for making an idea visible and runnable quickly. | Define acceptable behavior, risk, and service expectations for real users. |
| Feedback often comes from prompt changes and a successful demonstration. | Feedback comes from tests, review, deployment controls, monitoring, incidents, and user outcomes. |
| A narrow happy path can be persuasive. | Consider relevant edge cases, misuse, failures, security, and operating conditions. |
| The creator may be the only person who understands the experiment. | An accountable team needs to be able to change and support the system over time. |
This is a practical comparison, not a formal standard. Its central distinction is that “it ran once” answers a narrower question than “can we responsibly operate and change it?”
Is vibe coding safe for production?
Not by default—and not inherently unsafe in every case. Safety depends on what the application does, what it can affect, and whether people have reviewed and validated it to a level appropriate to those risks. Generated code still needs human accountability, especially where security-sensitive behavior, important data, or consequential outcomes are involved.

Google Cloud describes an application lifecycle that moves from ideation and generation through iterative refinement, human testing and validation, and deployment. Its guide says: “Testing and validation: A human expert reviews the application for security, quality, and correctness.” Google Cloud also markets “vibe deploying” as a way to launch to a live, production-grade environment with a click or prompt. That describes deployment convenience; launching an application does not by itself establish that the particular application is fit for production. See Google Cloud’s application-lifecycle explanation.

Use a risk-appropriate readiness review rather than treating a checklist as a guarantee. For a small, low-consequence tool, proportionate checks may be enough; a service with sensitive data or serious consequences needs deeper scrutiny.

- Define the intended behavior and scope. State what the application should do, who will use it, and what data it handles. Make important constraints explicit so reviewers and tests can assess more than the visible happy path.
- Review the implementation and dependencies. Have a qualified person inspect the generated code and the components it relies on, with particular attention to security-sensitive behavior. A runnable result is not a substitute for understanding what the software does.
- Test beyond the demonstration. Check expected behavior and relevant edge and failure cases. Choose the depth of testing according to the application’s risks; a successful walkthrough alone covers only the paths exercised in that walkthrough.
- Plan deployment and recovery. Decide how changes are released and how to roll them back if they cause problems. Deployment is part of operating the application, not the finish line.
- Establish monitoring, maintenance, and ownership. Identify who is responsible for decisions and operation, how problems will be noticed, and who will maintain the service as requirements and dependencies change.
This framing synthesizes the review and lifecycle responsibilities described by Thoughtworks, Google Cloud, and Google’s SRE book catalog. The catalog describes Site Reliability Engineering as covering how SRE engages across the lifecycle to build, deploy, monitor, and maintain large software systems; it also lists The Site Reliability Workbook as a hands-on companion and Building Secure & Reliable Systems on secure design and operation of scalable systems.

Vibe coding is valuable when the goal is to explore an idea, make a concept concrete, or create a prototype that helps people discuss what should be built. Its speed and immediate feedback can make early experimentation more accessible.
The mistake is not using AI to make a first version. It is treating a convincing first version as proof that production engineering is complete. Keep the demo’s value, then separately decide what evidence, review, and operating practices the real application needs.
