You do not need a VPN to use Google Home or Google Assistant. If you want VPN coverage for smart-home devices that cannot run a VPN app, you may be able to route them through a VPN client configured on your router—but that depends on your router’s firmware, the VPN provider’s supported protocol, and whether local discovery and control still work on your network.
Does Google Home need a VPN?
No. Google’s setup and connectivity guidance covers internet access, Wi-Fi, and local-network permissions; it does not specify a VPN as a requirement or promise that every VPN will work with every Nest or Home configuration. A VPN should not be expected to improve Assistant accuracy or make activity invisible to Google.

For ordinary setup and use, prioritize a compatible Wi-Fi network, a reliable internet connection, and the permissions the Home app needs. Google says most home Wi-Fi networks are compatible with Nest products, but captive-portal networks and enterprise 802.1x/RADIUS networks are incompatible. Mobile hotspots are not recommended because bandwidth, availability, or data limits may be an issue; public and open Wi-Fi networks carry security risks. Some Nest products support only 2.4 GHz. When a router VPN can cover smart-home devices
Many smart-home devices do not offer their own VPN app. A router running a VPN client can potentially route traffic from connected devices through a VPN tunnel, but it is an optional network configuration—not a Google Home feature or a guaranteed way to protect every device.

Before configuring or buying equipment, check these compatibility points:
- Your router’s firmware must support VPN client mode, not merely VPN passthrough or server functions.
- The router and VPN provider must support the same client protocol. NordVPN’s router instructions, for example, say the configuration may require OpenVPN client support; requirements vary by provider and router.
- Confirm the provider has current setup instructions for your exact router firmware. An ISP-issued router may not allow VPN configuration.
- Check whether the router can route only selected devices through the VPN, if you do not want all household traffic on the tunnel.
- After setup, test device discovery, pairing, casting, and control on your actual network. A VPN can change routing in ways that affect local-network communication.
Provider instructions are not evidence of Google Home-specific testing. Fix setup problems before changing your VPN setup
If the Home app cannot find or pair with a device, first check the local connection requirements. Google’s pairing guidance says the phone should be on the same Wi-Fi network as the Home or Nest device, Bluetooth should be enabled, and cellular data should be turned off while troubleshooting. On iOS 14 or later, allow local-network access for the Google Home or Nest app. Follow Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps.
iPhone or iPad VPN warning applies to setup
Google warns that some iOS VPN tunnels might interfere with setup of Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro. Its iOS setup troubleshooting page recommends turning off the VPN temporarily during setup, then turning it back on afterward. This is a specific setup warning, not a claim that VPNs always disrupt Google Home.

If pairing still fails, check the router’s VPN routing rules and whether the phone and smart-home device can communicate on the same local network. Google’s instructions for setting up Nest Wifi Pro or Nest Wifi provide the relevant device setup context.
Custom DNS is not a VPN
Changing DNS settings does not create an encrypted VPN tunnel. DNS translates domain names into network addresses; VPN routing carries traffic through a VPN connection. Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi can use automatic DNS, ISP DNS, or a custom DNS server. If a custom server is incorrect or unavailable, connected devices may lose internet access. Keep the Wi-Fi network secure
A VPN is not a substitute for securing the router itself. Google recommends a strong Wi-Fi password and current router firmware. Its security guidance also suggests reviewing port forwarding and considering removal of exposed rules for ports 8008, 8009, and 8443.
