Vibe Coding Explained: Where It Helps and Where It Can Fail

Vibe coding can help turn an idea into a prototype with less initial syntax work, but AI-generated software still needs verification—and people remain responsible for what they deploy.

Vibe coding is building software by telling a code-generating AI what you want, running what it produces, and refining it through conversation. In the stricter, original sense, the person accepts the generated code without closely reading or understanding it. The phrase is also used more broadly for AI-assisted programming that includes code review and debugging, so not every use of AI to write code is vibe coding in that strict sense.

What does vibe coding mean?

Microsoft Research describes the practice as developers writing code primarily through interaction with code-generating large language models rather than composing the code themselves. OpenSSF draws a sharper line: the user accepts generated code without reviewing or understanding it, then steers by observing results and asking for changes. The distinction matters because conversational AI assistance can include careful review, while the hands-off version does not.

Computer scientist Andrej Karpathy introduced the phrase in February 2025. The Associated Press reproduced his deliberately informal description of “fully giv[ing] in to the vibes” and forgetting the code exists; that captures the original hands-off flavor, not a recommendation to ignore what software does.

How does the workflow work?

  1. Describe the behavior. State what the program should do in ordinary language, rather than starting by writing each line of code.
  2. Ask an AI coding tool to generate or change code. The tool translates the request into a software implementation.
  3. Run the result. See whether it behaves as intended or produces errors.
  4. Report what happened and iterate. Ask for a fix or adjustment, then run the revised version.

The shift is in where effort goes: less initial attention to syntax, more to describing intent and judging the result. It does not transfer responsibility for deployed software to the AI.

What are the real advantages?

It can make a rough prototype easier to start

Instead of beginning with syntax, a user can describe an application-level goal and ask for an initial implementation. Twilio gives the example of asking an AI coding tool to create a voice application that plays an MP3 when someone calls a number. This can lower the initial friction between an idea and something to try; it does not establish that the finished software is reliable or ready to deploy.

Conversation makes experimentation iterative

A user can refine a request after seeing what the program does, which makes the approach useful for exploring possibilities. Microsoft Research’s account of trust in AI coding tools emphasizes that confidence develops contextually through iterative verification, not blanket acceptance.

It offers a way into software creation without starting with syntax

People who do not want to begin by learning programming syntax may find it easier to try an idea through a conversational interface. That is a potential benefit of the interaction style, not evidence that everyone can become a software engineer or that AI guarantees faster delivery.

What are the drawbacks and limits?

A demo can work even when its creator does not understand it

Under the strict definition, vibe coding involves accepting generated code without reviewing or understanding it. A visible success can therefore hide how the program works, which makes it harder to judge what it does or safely change it later.

Passing a quick test is not a quality or security review

A program that appears to work in a demonstration has not thereby been shown to be secure, dependable, or suitable for real users. Microsoft Research describes trust as something developed through verification; Twilio cautions against taking the approach beyond prototypes or low-risk side projects without addressing its risks.

People remain accountable for what they deploy

In an Associated Press report, Cat Wu, project manager of Claude Code, said the work shifts from “the nitty-gritty syntax” toward communicating a higher-level goal, while noting that responsibility remains with engineers. Less line-by-line coding does not mean no one is responsible for the resulting software.

Broad productivity claims are not established

Microsoft Research notes that early studies have begun, but much of the work focuses on artifacts or theory and has limited empirical backing. The evidence cited here does not establish a universal speed increase, adoption rate, or productivity percentage.

When is vibe coding a sensible choice?

It is most defensible when the goal is exploration, a personal experiment, or a prototype that can be discarded or rebuilt and where failure has little consequence. There is no universal line separating a safe project from an unsafe one. Judge the boundary by what could happen if the software fails, what data or access it handles, whether a knowledgeable person can inspect and test it, how long it must be maintained, and whether a prototype is enough.

For software that handles sensitive data, materially affects users, or needs to remain reliable, arrange deliberate verification and competent engineering review before deployment. That is prudent guidance based on the limits of accepting code without understanding it and the need to verify results, not a formal standard quoted by these sources.

What evidence can—and can’t—tell us

The sources establish a useful definition, describe the workflow, and identify reasons to verify code and be cautious about higher-risk uses. They do not provide a directly attributable original statistic that would support a specific productivity gain or adoption rate. Treat broad numerical claims about vibe coding with care unless they come with clear, relevant evidence.
