That does not mean every device supports VGA—or that every user keeps it for the same reason.
Why VGA is still used
VGA is an analog video connection with a familiar connector that has three rows of 15 pins, also called DE-15 or HD-15. Dell identifies classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, small businesses and home workspaces as settings where legacy equipment may remain in use. In those situations, VGA can provide a straightforward way to connect an older computer to a display or projector that accepts it. Manufacturer documentation shows that this is not merely a matter of old cables lying in a drawer. Ricoh’s projector compatibility information, updated July 6, 2026, lists VGA analog PC signal modes—including 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz—for applicable models. Vivitek’s legacy D5010-WNL specifications list two VGA inputs and a VGA output. These are model-specific examples, not evidence that every current projector includes VGA. Ricoh’s compatibility information and Vivitek’s D5010-WNL specifications illustrate why checking the exact model matters.

Nor does equipment documentation establish why any particular person keeps using VGA. It supports a narrower conclusion: compatibility with installed equipment can be a practical reason to keep a working setup, whether or not nostalgia also matters to some users.

What to check before connecting VGA
- Confirm both ports. A direct VGA cable is appropriate when the computer or other source and the display both have compatible VGA ports. Check the port on each device rather than relying on product age or appearance.
- Check the supported video mode. Resolution and refresh-rate support depend on the specific source and display. Consult their manuals or manufacturer compatibility tables; a mode listed for one projector is not guaranteed for another.
- Plan for audio separately. VGA carries video, not sound. If the presentation or video needs audio, use a separate audio connection supported by the devices.
- Consider the use case and picture quality. A working compatible setup may be sufficient for an office display or presentation. Do not assume that every converted signal will look identical to a native digital connection.
When the display has no VGA input
If the source outputs analog VGA but the display accepts only HDMI or another digital input, the signal has to be converted. A passive plug adapter does not itself translate analog video into a digital signal. Dell distinguishes such adapters from active converters, which perform the conversion and may be needed for this connection direction. Verify that a converter is designed for VGA source to the display’s input; the reverse direction is not interchangeable. Also check how audio will reach the display, since VGA itself carries none.
Conversion can have trade-offs. Barco states that its NGS-D320 does not support analog video input through a VGA port or the analog pins of its DVI port, and cautions that digitizing analog video can produce noise depending on the device. This is a model-specific limitation, but it is a useful reminder that an adapter cannot make unsupported input work and that converted image quality can vary. Barco’s NGS-D320 support note documents that limitation.

Keep the setup, convert it or replace equipment?

There is no universal cost or quality verdict that applies to every repair, conversion or replacement. Start with the equipment you already have: if it connects reliably and meets the job, age alone is not a technical reason to replace it. If it does not, use the manuals and compatibility listings to establish whether a cable, active converter or different display path can solve the specific mismatch.
