First check whether your TiVo is skipping by mistake or using SkipMode to jump over commercials. If playback is unintentionally jumping or dropping recorded content, check whether the affected shows use an over-the-air (OTA) antenna. For OTA recordings, secure the connections, check the signal reading, and inspect the antenna and coax path before replacing equipment.
Is TiVo skipping by mistake or skipping commercials?
A green SKIP icon beside a recording means the program is eligible for SkipMode; it does not indicate a playback fault. SkipMode can jump over commercials in selected recordings after they have aired. It does not work on live TV, and TiVo says local news and sports are excluded. Eligibility also depends on the device, TiVo experience version, channel, and program. TiVo’s SkipMode support page lists current compatibility details.

If you see the icon or have enabled automatic SkipMode, check its settings before troubleshooting reception. On a compatible DVR, go to Settings > User Preferences > SkipMode. A TiVo Mini takes the relevant settings from its host DVR. Automatic SkipMode requires TiVo Experience 4; it is unavailable on Premiere and mobile devices.

If there is no SKIP icon, or the picture jumps, freezes, or omits content unexpectedly, note whether the problem affects one recording or several, live TV or recordings, and OTA or cable reception. Those details help narrow down what to check; they do not, on their own, establish a cause.

Check whether OTA signal is involved
If the affected programs were recorded through an antenna, start with the signal path. TiVo says low or fluctuating OTA signal strength can cause skipping or recording problems. Its general guidance describes 80–99% as the signal-strength “sweet spot,” not a universal cutoff or guarantee: reception varies with location, transmitter power, weather, buildings, interference, and equipment. See TiVo’s OTA: Over-the-Air Antenna Essentials for its guidance.
- Secure the connections. Check that the DVR’s power connection and antenna cable are firmly connected.
- Check the signal reading. Use the signal-strength information available on your TiVo and compare it with TiVo’s general guidance. A low or fluctuating reading makes the antenna path worth investigating.
- Inspect the antenna and cable path. Check antenna position and the coaxial cable between the antenna and DVR. Also inspect any splitters, amplifiers, or other components installed in that path.
- Isolate a suspect component. If practical, adjust the antenna or swap one cable-path component at a time, then check whether the signal reading or playback changes. A replacement coaxial cable is worth considering only if the existing cable appears faulty or a swap helps identify it as the problem.
- Restart the DVR. A restart is a basic troubleshooting check. TiVo links to model-specific restart guidance; follow the instructions for your device.
If the problem remains
If the signal path checks out but playback still skips, contact TiVo Support or your signal or cable provider, depending on how the affected programs arrive. The available TiVo guidance supports checking OTA reception, but it does not identify a particular hardware repair, hard-drive failure, or network issue as the cause of an individual skipping symptom.
