Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no universal winner: check availability at your exact address first, then compare the specific service offered. Verizon Fios is fiber and can provide near-symmetrical upload and download speeds on most plans; Verizon 5G Home is fixed wireless and should be judged by local eligibility and actual performance. Cox’s advertised cable gigabit tiers offer high downloads, but its surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig plans list uploads up to 35 Mbps. The right value depends on total ongoing cost, upload needs, data terms and equipment—not the download headline alone.
Start with the address, not the brand
Enter the service address in both providers’ availability checkers before comparing plans. Verizon says Fios is available in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, while 5G Home reaches more locations nationally; either way, eligibility is address-specific. Cox availability and offers are also address-specific. The services may not all be available at the same home.

Verizon’s availability page describes Fios as fiber and says most plans have near-symmetrical upload and download speeds. Use the local plan selector rather than treating a regional page as a nationwide rate card: Verizon’s Norfolk-area page, for example, lists local tiers and says its Fios prices include a $10 Auto Pay discount. That is a local example, not a price applicable everywhere.
Cox’s currently surfaced residential plans page presents Spectrum branding and describes service as fiber-powered with a coaxial connection to the premises. Check the provider identity, service description and offer shown for your address and account: Cox residential internet plans.

What the connection means for performance
| Service | Connection and advertised performance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Fios | Fiber; near-symmetrical upload and download speeds on most plans, according to Verizon | Useful to consider if you frequently upload large files, back up to the cloud, make video calls or create content. Check the tiers available at your address. |
| Verizon 5G Home | Fixed wireless; local eligibility and performance vary | It is not Fios. Confirm that the address qualifies and assess expected service for the location rather than assuming fiber-like performance. |
| Cox cable | The surfaced Cox 1 Gig and 2 Gig plan page lists uploads up to 35 Mbps | High advertised download capacity does not imply comparable upload capacity. Consider whether uploads are important to your household. |
These are provider descriptions and advertised maxima, not the results of an independent comparative speed test. Actual performance can vary by address, equipment, wireless conditions and household use. For a home with several people on calls, streaming and gaming at once, choose based on the activities happening simultaneously; the largest download tier is not automatically the best value.
Compare the real monthly cost
Prices shown on provider pages can depend on location, promotion, Auto Pay, mobile service, equipment and offer duration. Verizon’s 5G Home page advertises starting at $35 per month with Auto Pay and an eligible Verizon mobile phone plan. That is conditional pricing, not a universal stand-alone rate. The page lists three plan tiers, a router, no hidden equipment charges and plan-specific price guarantees; displayed promotions and perks have their own eligibility and redemption terms. Verify the terms at checkout on the Verizon 5G Home page.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Cox’s surfaced Gigabit plans page lists promotional starting prices for 1 Gig and 2 Gig offers. It says taxes and fees are excluded, no annual contract is required for the offers shown, and Panoramic WiFi equipment is included for a stated period. The page does not make those offers universal: confirm local eligibility and what the price becomes after the promotional or equipment-included period.
To compare fairly, use the same service address and write down the monthly bill after any promotion ends. Include taxes and fees, required equipment or rental charges, installation, Auto Pay or mobile-plan conditions, and how long any price guarantee lasts. A low starting price can be poor value if it relies on a bundle you do not want or rises substantially later.

Check data terms and equipment before ordering
Data use
Cox’s published data terms are not presented as one stable policy across the pages surfaced. Its coverage and service details describe a 1.25 TB monthly allowance, automatic 50 GB increments at $10 each above that allowance, and a $100 monthly maximum overage charge. A separate Cox data options page describes unlimited-data packages and conditions tied to qualifying Cox Mobile service and internet speed. These figures and conditions should not be assumed to apply to every current offer: confirm the exact allowance, overage terms or unlimited-data eligibility for the plan and bundle at your address.
Verizon’s plan terms also apply; read the details for the specific Fios or 5G Home offer rather than assuming every plan has identical usage rules.

Modems, routers and included Wi-Fi
Verizon’s 5G Home page says a router is included. Fios equipment terms vary by offer, so check the local plan details. Cox says a modem is required and recommends an approved cable modem; its support information says Gigablast and Ultimate service require DOCSIS 3.1. Compatibility depends on the service tier, so verify the modem against Cox’s current approved list and your exact plan before using your own. On the surfaced high-speed Cox offers, Panoramic WiFi is included for a stated period, so check whether an equipment charge applies afterward. Wi-Fi performance inside a home also depends on the equipment and home conditions.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Choose based on your household’s priorities
- Frequent uploads, cloud backups or video calls: If Fios is available, its near-symmetrical speeds on most plans may suit these tasks better than a Cox tier whose listed upload maximum is 35 Mbps. Compare the exact local tiers.
- High downloads and Cox is available: Cox’s surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig offers advertise high download speeds. Decide whether those downloads justify the price and whether the listed upload capacity fits your use.
- Considering Verizon 5G Home: Treat it as its own fixed-wireless option, not as a substitute name for Fios. Check eligibility and local performance expectations before choosing.
- Cost is the priority: Compare the post-promotion bill, required bundles, fees and ongoing equipment cost—not just the first advertised monthly price.
- Heavy or uncertain data use: Confirm the actual allowance or unlimited-data conditions for the specific offer, especially before relying on a general provider page.
A practical comparison checklist
- Check the exact address with Verizon and Cox; note whether Verizon offers Fios, 5G Home or both, and which Cox offer is actually shown.
- Record the connection type and the advertised download and upload speeds for each eligible plan.
- Ask for the monthly total after promotions, including taxes, fees, equipment and installation; note any Auto Pay or mobile-service requirement and price-guarantee duration.
- Confirm the plan’s data policy, including allowance, overage terms or the conditions for unlimited data.
- Check whether equipment is included temporarily or ongoing, and confirm compatibility if you plan to supply a Cox modem.
- Choose the least expensive eligible plan that fits your household’s real simultaneous use, including uploads—not simply the largest advertised download tier.
