Keep it plugged into a nearby three-prong outlet: the ONT needs power for Fios services to work.
What the OPSU does
The ONT is the fiber termination equipment; it converts light signals on Verizon’s fiber network into electrical signals used by home equipment. The OPSU connects to a household electrical outlet and powers the ONT. It is neither a router nor a modem, and it is not itself a battery backup. Verizon’s installation guidance says a technician installs the ONT and power supply, with access to a three-prong outlet near the ONT; a separate Battery Backup Unit (BBU) is installed if ordered. Should you leave it plugged in?
Yes. Verizon says the ONT needs electricity for Fios services and instructs customers to keep its power supply plugged in. The OPSU’s indicator shows whether power is present: Verizon says it should be lit during normal operation, and its business support guidance describes the indicator as green. A dark light indicates that electricity is not flowing from the outlet to the ONT; it does not, by itself, prove the adapter has failed. See Verizon’s ONT support page.

- Do not assume the adapter is a universal, customer-replaceable part. Verizon’s cited support pages do not establish one OPSU model, output voltage or current, connector, or replacement part number for every installation.
Verizon describes the ONT as using very little power, comparing it qualitatively to a couple of night-lights; it does not give a measured wattage in that guidance.

What happens during a power outage?
The OPSU supplies ordinary power; outage backup is a separate, equipment-dependent arrangement. Verizon’s battery options support basic voice service, including emergency 911 dialing, according to the installed equipment. They do not keep Fios internet or TV running. The available backup choices and their stated limits differ:

Verizon’s battery-backup guidance says the suitable option depends on the equipment installed. These devices are not interchangeable with an OPSU replacement.

Replacing a battery or power supply
If you have a BBU
Verizon specifies a 12 V, 7.2 Ah sealed lead-acid battery for its BBU guidance and says a replacement can be purchased from Verizon or a third party. Before buying, check the battery label, terminals, and dimensions against the installed battery. That specification should not be treated as a universal fit for every BBU model.

Do not buy a generic adapter based only on the term “ONT power supply.” The cited Verizon guidance does not provide universal OPSU electrical or connector specifications. Check the label and model of the installed equipment or ask Verizon to confirm the correct replacement for that ONT.

- Identify the ONT and power arrangement installed at your home.
- Confirm with Verizon which backup device is compatible with that configuration.
- Decide whether basic voice service, rather than internet or TV, is the outage requirement.
- For an existing BBU, match the replacement battery to the installed unit’s label and physical fit; for PowerReserve, use the specified 12 fresh D-cell alkaline batteries.
