It is not a separate fee for recovering your login or an outside account-recovery service. If Venmo says your account is frozen for a failed payment, use the app’s “Restore your account” prompts or visit venmo.com/recover in a computer browser.
What a Venmo recovery payment covers
When a payment funded through Venmo fails, Venmo may freeze the account and require repayment of the amount owed. The recovery payment settles that balance so the account can be restored. Use the recovery process only when Venmo identifies a failed-payment balance; recovering a password or login verification code is a different issue.

How to pay a failed-payment balance
- Open the recovery flow. In the Venmo app, follow the “Restore your account” prompts. Alternatively, use a computer browser to open venmo.com/recover.
- Choose a funding method and amount. Venmo says debit-card funding is the fastest option. If you cannot pay the full amount right away, edit the repayment amount before selecting Pay and submit a partial payment.
- Allow time for processing. Venmo says a bank-funded recovery payment may take up to five business days to process. The account remains frozen until recovery is complete, and Venmo says it will email you when the account is unfrozen.
Payments received into the account are automatically applied to the amount owed. Venmo does not state a processing estimate here for debit-card payments; it describes debit-card funding as the fastest method.
Check which problem you have
| What you’re seeing | What to do |
|---|---|
| Venmo says the account is frozen because a payment failed | Use “Restore your account” in the app or venmo.com/recover to repay the balance. |
| You cannot receive a login verification code on a new device | On the login screen, try “Other options” or “I don’t have access to this phone.” If those alternatives are unavailable, contact Venmo Support. |
| You see a transaction, transfer, or account change you did not authorize | Contact Venmo as soon as possible. Be ready to provide the transaction date and amount and, when applicable, the username paid. |
| A stranger sent you an unexpected payment | Do not return the money yourself or move it; contact Venmo Support. Check the payment in the app or on Venmo’s website rather than relying only on an email notification. |
Protect your account and contact Venmo safely
Venmo’s security guidance says, “Nobody at Venmo will ever contact you to request a password or verification code for your account.” Do not share either with someone claiming to help restore your account. Venmo says it requests identity documents through forms in the app, in-app chat, or a secure upload form linked from a help.venmo.com page—not by asking you to send documents directly by text or email.
