For an eligible payment to a personal profile, you can leave the purchase toggle off before sending. Once sent, a payment marked as a purchase cannot be untagged; if you selected the option by mistake, contact Venmo Support.
Turn off the purchase designation before sending
The choice described by Venmo is made per payment, not through a general account setting. When the option appears, leaving it off means you are not identifying that payment as a purchase. Venmo says Purchase Protection applies only if the transaction is eligible.

- In the Venmo app, tap Pay/Request and select the recipient’s personal profile.
- Enter the amount and payment note, then tap Pay.
- On the next screen, look below the payment method for the purchase toggle.
- Leave the toggle off if you do not want to identify the payment as a purchase. Review the payment details before sending.
The toggle may not appear for a particular payment. Venmo says not all payment activity is eligible, so the absence of the option does not indicate that a general protection setting has been changed. Venmo’s Buying from Personal Profiles instructions describe the payment-level choice.

If you already sent the payment
Venmo says a payment cannot be untagged or recategorized after it has been marked as a purchase. If you chose the toggle accidentally, contact Support through the app; Venmo says it may be able to return the fee. A purchase dispute is not a way to remove the designation. Venmo’s Buying and Selling on Venmo FAQ explains the restriction and the accidental-tag guidance.

Do not assume a completed payment can be canceled. Venmo says payments are generally sent to the recipient right away and cannot be canceled once sent. Pending-payment situations may have separate handling; check the transaction status and Venmo’s cancellation instructions for the specific case.
If the purchase itself went wrong
A problem with an item or service is different from accidentally marking a payment as a purchase. For an eligible purchase, Venmo encourages buyers to try resolving the issue with the seller. If an item did not arrive or a service was not provided, Venmo’s help instructions say to open the transaction from the Me tab, tap Need Help?, select the issue, provide the requested information, and submit it. Venmo investigates eligible purchases; whether you receive a refund depends on that investigation. See Venmo’s purchase help and FAQ.

Consider the trade-off before paying a stranger
Leaving the toggle off may matter when buying from someone you do not know. Venmo warns that scammers may ask buyers or sellers using personal profiles not to mark payments as purchases. Its guidance recommends buying from strangers through an approved business account or marking an eligible personal-profile payment as a purchase when the option is available. That does not mean every payment or item is protected; check the applicable eligibility terms in Venmo’s personal-profile guidance.
Purchase tagging can also affect what the recipient receives. Venmo’s FAQ gives an illustrative example of $98 received on a $100 payment tagged as a purchase, with the associated fee paid by the recipient. The FAQ does not state a publication year, and the example should not be treated as a universal or current fee for every transaction. Check Venmo’s fee information for the applicable terms.
