No—if you mean the cable’s outer jacket. For ordinary balanced twisted-pair Ethernet cable, jacket color is not a standards-based indicator of speed, performance category, or intended use. Choose by the category and construction printed on the cable, not by whether it is blue, yellow, or another color.
What does Ethernet cable color tell you?
The outer jacket
The jacket is the visible covering around the cable. BICSI says there are no standards recommending jacket colors for balanced twisted-pair cable according to performance category or intended use, such as network, audio-visual, or voice. A particular color therefore does not establish a cable’s speed or category. BICSI’s standards FAQ also notes that organizations may use colors as optional identifiers.

A company or installer can assign colors to distinguish runs or purposes, but that is a local convention, not a universal code. If you rely on color to organize cabling, document the scheme and label the cables so the meaning is clear to others.
The wires inside the cable
The colored conductors inside a cable are different from its jacket color. In T568A and T568B termination schemes, conductor colors determine which wires connect to which pins in an RJ45 connector. They do not indicate the cable’s performance category. APC’s T568A and T568B pin sequences and Schneider Electric’s RJ45 wiring guide show the arrangements.

How should you choose an Ethernet cable?
When comparing patch cables or selecting bulk cable for a run, check the information that actually describes the cable and its intended installation:
- Category: Read the printed category marking, such as Cat 6. Do not infer it from the jacket color.
- Construction: Check shielding and other construction details against the requirements of the route and installation.
- Length and connectors: Make sure the cable reaches the destination and has connectors compatible with your equipment, or that bulk cable is suitable for the connectors and termination method you plan to use.
- Environment and route: Confirm that the cable is appropriate for where it will be installed. Jacket color alone does not establish that suitability.
- Color: Treat it as an aesthetic choice or a documented identification aid—not a performance specification.
The cited standards guidance concerns balanced twisted-pair cabling. It does not establish that jacket color is irrelevant for every cable family or local installation rule, so follow the applicable design and installation requirements for your project.

What do T568A and T568B mean?
T568A and T568B specify how the four colored wire pairs are arranged at an RJ45 connector. In the pin maps published by APC, the blue and brown pairs occupy the same listed pin positions in both schemes; the orange and green pairs exchange positions. The schemes refer to conductor-to-pin wiring, not the outer jacket.

Follow the wiring design and equipment instructions for your installation rather than assuming one scheme is universally required.

Does Ethernet cable color affect speed?
The available standards guidance does not assign speed or performance categories to jacket colors. A color may identify a cable under a site-specific scheme, but that only tells you what the installer or organization intended the color to mean. To identify the cable itself, look for its printed category and construction details.
