It can scaffold far more than an implementation file—exports, tests, stories, metadata, documentation plumbing, registries, and website examples—but it does not make the product and interaction decisions engineers still need to review.
The workflow is described in Vellira’s September 5, 2026 article by Roman Bakurov. Its central question is: what do you know about a component before generation that should drive every repeatable surface?

What does Vellira’s component generator do?
It treats component generation as a plan for a component’s repository surfaces, not merely as a way to write a source file. The generator takes declared intent, resolves targets, and creates repeatable structures around the implementation. That can make component setup more consistent and reviewable, provided the inputs accurately describe the component.
The approach depends on an important distinction: structural work can be generated deterministically, while product semantics, detailed interaction design, and final API decisions remain engineering work. A scaffold is a starting point, not proof that a component is ready to ship.

What information can drive generation?
The documented command is pnpm create:component. Its positional inputs identify a component name, platform, layer, and category; optional inputs describe its reusable profile and structure. The article lists platforms web, native, and both, and layers primitives, components, and patterns.
Categories include action, form, navigation, overlay, feedback, data display, layout, and utility. Structural inputs can include a profile, control kind, capabilities, public parts, icons, tokens, and token strategy. The reusable profiles listed are base, form-control, compound, and overlay.
This explicit model matters because architectural structure should not be inferred from a component’s name. A name-based rule can mistake a product-specific choice for a universal pattern; declared inputs make the intended structure visible in the plan.

Example: a compound Tabs component
Tabs illustrates why a profile can be more informative than a name heuristic. A compound Tabs component may expose Root, List, Trigger, and Content parts, and declare capabilities such as controlled and uncontrolled state, keyboard behavior, and focus management. Those declarations can then shape the generated files and baseline review evidence.
The generator can repeat the structure implied by those inputs. It cannot determine on its own which state model best fits a product, what the public API should promise, or how nuanced interaction should work in every context.
How does the generation pipeline work?
1. Describe intent
The command captures the component’s identity and architectural choices through positional and optional inputs. Inspection and safety options described in the article include --dry-run, --check, and --force. Their roles differ: previewing a plan, checking generated freshness, and authorizing regeneration are not interchangeable actions.
2. Resolve platform targets
For both, the generator plans separate React and React Native targets, under paths such as packages/react/... and packages/react-native/.... The targets share component identity and high-level intent, but they need not share implementation details.

That separation is useful because browser and native runtimes do not have identical presentation, focus, portal, or accessibility mechanics. A browser-oriented keyboard or DOM assumption should not be copied mechanically into a native component. The generator can preserve the shared intent while allowing each platform to have appropriate APIs, styles, tests, accessibility semantics, and interaction behavior.
3. Generate repository and website surfaces
Depending on profile and platform, the generated repository surface may include:
- Component implementation, public types, local exports, and package or layer exports.
- Tests and machine-readable test contracts, plus starter stories.
- Platform styles, compound-part directories, tokens, and shared form-control types.
- Metadata, documentation contracts, API-documentation targets, and updates to registries or public API contracts.
The top-level generator can also invoke a website component-page generator. The documented website outputs include usage and component examples, accessibility content, API data, a playground schema and UI, React and React Native demos, and component-catalog registration. Which surfaces are produced depends on the declared structure and target.
4. Derive review evidence from intent
Baseline tests are generated from the profile, control kind, effective capabilities, and target platform. This ties the initial test contract to what the component claims to be, rather than applying one generic test template to every component.
For example, a Tabs component’s declared parts and keyboard or focus capabilities call for different evidence from a form Input’s control behavior. Platform differences matter here too: browser-specific keyboard requirements should not automatically become native test requirements. Generated tests establish a baseline; engineers still need to add meaningful edge cases and verify the behavior the product actually requires.

How does it guard against unsafe or stale changes?
Generation modifies a repository, so the plan needs boundaries. The documented safeguards aim to validate targets and required resources before writing, protect existing work, and make regeneration predictable.
- Existing targets: targets are rejected by default.
--forceexplicitly authorizes regeneration. - Preflight validation: checks can cover package barrels and registries, valid profile-and-parts combinations, required compound Root parts, requested canonical icons and tokens, and target conflicts.
- Missing resources: a missing requested resource should block the plan rather than cause the generator to substitute a guess.
- Preview:
--dry-runvalidates and reports planned creates and updates without writing them. - Manual work: regeneration is designed to preserve manually owned tests instead of treating every test file as disposable output.
- Stable output: canonical ordering, duplicate detection, and stable serialization help keep generated changes consistent.
- Freshness checks: check modes can let CI detect generated output that is stale relative to its inputs.
These are the safeguards described for the workflow; their value depends on the generator’s ownership rules being clear enough that engineers know which files it may rewrite.
What should engineers still review?
Deterministic generation is best suited to repeatable repository structure. It does not replace the decisions that make a component correct for its users and product. Engineers retain responsibility for:

- Component-specific accessibility details and complex interaction behavior.
- Visual refinement and platform-appropriate presentation.
- Meaningful edge-case tests beyond the generated baseline.
This boundary is the practical test of a useful generator: it should reduce repetitive setup without disguising unfinished design work as a completed component. As Bakurov puts it, “The component implementation still matters. But it no longer has to carry the entire burden of ‘done.’”
How to assess this generation approach
For a team evaluating a component generator, the useful comparison is not simply how many files it creates. Consider whether the workflow:
- Models profiles, capabilities, controls, and parts explicitly instead of relying on component-name rules.
- Shares high-level intent across platforms without assuming one implementation fits React and React Native.
- Covers exports, tests and contracts, stories, documentation, metadata, tokens, registries, and website examples—not just implementation files.
- Validates before mutation, defines overwrite behavior, preserves manual work, and supports previews and freshness checks.
- Clearly distinguishes generated scaffolding from decisions engineers must make and verify.
Vellira’s published description presents that broader workflow and its intended boundaries, but reports no measured time savings, defect reduction, or other performance results. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the breadth of generated output alone.
