A brief freeze in Apex Legends can come from a local frame-rate stall, a background task or game-file problem, or a network hitch. Turn on the in-game Performance Display and check FPS, latency, and packet loss while it happens: an FPS drop with steady network readings points toward local performance; rising latency or packet loss points toward the connection or server. This is a useful troubleshooting split, not a definitive diagnosis.
What a one-second freeze can—and cannot—tell you
A short pause does not identify its cause. EA documents both local freezing and network lag, but its support guidance does not name a universal fault behind one-second freezes. A momentary rendering stall and a network delay can feel similar during a match, so use the readings at the time of the hitch rather than guessing from how it feels.

Check FPS, latency, and packet loss during the hitch
- Open Settings > Gameplay and enable Performance Display.
- Play until the freeze recurs, then note whether FPS falls, latency rises, or packet loss appears.
- If FPS drops while latency and packet loss stay steady, start with the local or platform steps below. If latency or packet loss rises, follow the network checks.
EA defines ping as the round-trip time for data and packet loss as data that fails to make the round trip; either can affect play. EA’s general guidance says under 50 ms is particularly good, under 100 ms will generally keep the game running well, and above 100 ms may begin to cause lag. If network readings spike
Check the data center and server status
- From the game’s launch screen, select the data center closest to your location. A farther server can mean more network travel and higher ping or packet loss.
- If all data centers show poor conditions, check EA server status and official PlayApex updates. Server load or server trouble can cause high ping or packet loss.
Check the local connection
Consider whether other people are sharing Wi-Fi, whether the router is distant or blocked, and whether background apps are using the connection. Restarting the router or testing with Ethernet may help isolate a wireless or connection issue. EA lists Ethernet for certain server-connectivity errors; it will not fix a local FPS drop, damaged game files, or a server outage.

If FPS drops while network readings stay steady
PC: try low-disruption checks first
- Close background apps that may be competing for system resources.
- If the hitch continues, try a clean boot to check whether background tasks are interfering.
- In the EA app, open Library > Apex Legends > Manage > Repair to check the game files.
- Test a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. EA lists these as troubleshooting options; they are not a guaranteed fix, and there is no need to assume both should be enabled together.
- If an error code specifically indicates a graphics-driver or installation problem, follow the instructions for that error, including updating graphics drivers where directed.
Reinstall the game only if repair and simpler steps do not help. EA’s general guidance also describes reinstalling as a troubleshooting option.
PlayStation or Xbox: use console-specific checks
- Install the latest system software, restart the console, and test with attached USB devices removed.
- EA’s PlayStation guidance includes a power cycle and reinstall; if you use external storage, test the game from internal storage.
- If the problem persists, note the platform, game version, whether the whole console locks up or only Apex, and any error code before contacting support. Do not assume a PlayStation-specific instruction applies identically to Xbox.
When PC specifications are relevant
EA describes its recommended PC baseline as intended for smooth 60 fps gameplay: 64-bit Windows 10, an Intel i5-3570K or equivalent, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290, 8 GB GPU RAM, and at least 75 GB of free disk space. This specification appears on EA’s Australia-localized requirements page, accessed in 2026; its original publication or update year is not stated. Meeting it does not rule out a freeze caused by software, network conditions, or another system issue. Check EA’s Apex Legends PC requirements for the current listing.
