Fire OS apps should not be assumed to work unchanged on Vega OS. Amazon describes Fire OS as an Android fork, while Vega is a Linux-based platform built around React Native and its own development tools. For viewers, the practical question is whether a particular app is available and supports the features they need on their exact Fire TV model—not just whether the device is called a Fire TV. Amazon’s device table currently lists the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and Fire TV Stick HD as Vega OS devices; many other listed Fire TV models use Fire OS.
What is the difference between Vega OS and Fire OS?
They are separate operating systems, not two names for the same Fire TV software. Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android and says Android apps will most likely run on Fire devices. Vega is Linux-based, uses React Native and has its own SDK, developer tools and app packaging. An app’s Android or Fire OS compatibility therefore does not, by itself, establish Vega compatibility.

| Question | Fire OS | Vega OS | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | Amazon describes it as a fork of Android. | Amazon describes it as Linux-based and built around React Native. | They have different app platforms; do not treat Vega as a Fire OS update. |
| App development | Android-based development, with Amazon-specific services and device requirements. | Vega SDK, Vega Developer Tools and Vega app packaging. | App availability depends on a version for the relevant platform. |
| Submission | Apps are submitted through the Amazon Appstore. | Vega apps are submitted as VPKG files through the Developer Console. | Developers need to provide a Vega binary as well as a Fire OS one to support both. |

Which Fire TV devices use Vega OS?
Check the full device model rather than infer the operating system from the Fire TV or Fire TV Stick name. Amazon’s published table maps individual models to their software. Its current examples include:

These are examples from Amazon’s published table, not a rule for every regional variant or future model. Amazon notes that device and build models can vary. Look up the full model in Amazon’s current device documentation before relying on an OS assumption.
Will Fire TV apps work on Vega OS?
Not automatically. Amazon’s Android compatibility statement concerns Fire devices running Fire OS; Amazon separately documents Vega-specific binaries and porting paths. The reviewed Amazon documentation does not provide a complete, current streaming-service inventory for Vega or a service-by-service feature comparison. A Fire OS app’s presence, login behavior or playback features cannot be inferred from the operating system name alone.

What viewers should verify
- Check the app’s current listing on the exact device, or the app publisher’s current support information.
- Confirm the features you rely on, such as playback, login, live TV, search or discovery, purchases and remote-control behavior.
- If a feature is essential, verify it with the publisher for the specific Vega model rather than assuming parity with the Fire OS version.
What does it take to port a Fire OS app to Vega?
It depends on how the original app was built. Amazon’s App Porting guide describes these routes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Starting point | Vega target | Documented implication |
|---|---|---|
| Fire OS WebView app | Vega WebView app | Porting path documented by Amazon. |
| Fire OS React Native app | React Native for Vega app | Porting path documented by Amazon. |
| Fire OS native Java/Kotlin app | React Native for Vega app | Amazon describes this as a full rewrite and says it requires the most manual review. |
| Web URL with no source code | Vega WebView app | Porting path documented by Amazon. |
The porting workflow can analyze source code, create a migration plan, generate code, build and validate an app, install it on a connected device or virtual device, and guide a developer through review. Its optional performance comparison can measure app launch time, UI fluidity and memory use. These are workflow capabilities, not guarantees that a port will match the original app’s performance or features.

Developers should review the generated migration guide and NextSteps file and test the result on physical hardware before treating it as production-ready.
Development hardware and tools
Amazon’s July 13, 2026 getting-started guide names a Fire TV Stick 4K Select as a real-hardware test device and also describes the Vega Virtual Device. The guide says Windows and WSL are not currently supported for the described Vega Developer Tools setup, and recommends physical hardware when beginning production app development. See Amazon’s Vega development guide for its setup details.

How do app listings and purchases work across both platforms?
Amazon documents two distribution approaches. A developer can put Fire OS and Vega binaries under one Developer Console listing or submit them as separate apps. The choice affects the customer-facing listing and purchase entitlements.
Recommended Free Tools
| Distribution approach | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
| One shared listing | Metadata is entered once, in-app purchase items are available to both versions, reviews are shown together, and customers see one app listing. Amazon says package names should match; apps using in-app purchases need Vega IAP libraries integrated. |
| Separate submissions | Metadata, purchase configuration, reviews and retail discovery are separate. An entitlement to the Fire OS app or its in-app purchase does not automatically transfer to a separately submitted Vega app. |
For a developer intending to support both platforms, the shared listing is the simpler documented route when its requirements fit the app. Amazon’s submission guidance specifies a VPKG binary and the com.amazon.category.main manifest category for Vega. Amazon marks much of its Vega documentation as open beta, so submission requirements may change.
Quick Recap
How to decide what applies to your Fire TV
- Identify the exact model. Use the device’s settings or model information; do not rely only on the product family name.
- Check its OS assignment. Match the full model against Amazon’s device table, allowing for regional or build-model differences.
- Check the named app. Use the device’s current Appstore listing or the publisher’s support information to confirm availability for that platform.
- Check required features. Verify app-specific functions with the publisher; a listing or OS match alone does not prove feature parity.
