They share a retro-computing spirit, but the available specifications do not establish them as equivalent machines: the C64 Ultimate targets the original C64 ecosystem, and Vectron is a platform for hands-on 6502 computing.
How the two machines differ

|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A 6502-based home-computer project by Nick Bild, reported by Hackaday on October 3, 2026. The Plus revision moves the design from breadboard to PCB and adds RAM and GPIO ports; capacities are not stated. Hackaday | A product Commodore describes as replicating original C64 hardware using FPGA technology. Its listed core is an AMD Xilinx Artix-7. Commodore |
| How do you expand it? | With project add-ons, including documented VGA and text-mode cards. The reviewed report does not provide a complete system specification or bill of materials. Hackaday | It has built-in modern and classic connections, plus listed memory and integrated Ultimate-II+ functions. Commodore |
| What is the compatibility target? | The reviewed coverage does not establish C64 software compatibility or a complete list of supported peripherals. Hackaday | Original C64 software and peripherals. Commodore advertises “Over 99.9% compatible,” a manufacturer claim without independent per-title results in the cited material. Commodore |
| What is known about buying it? | The reviewed coverage does not establish current price, retail availability, warranty, or whether it is sold as a finished computer or kit. Hackaday | Commodore’s product page lists the C64 Ultimate for order. Current price and regional terms should be checked on that page. Commodore |
What the Vectron65 Plus offers
Vectron65 Plus is best understood as a homebrew 6502 computing project, rather than a documented drop-in replacement for a Commodore 64. Hackaday reports that the Plus revision replaces the earlier breadboard build with a PCB and adds RAM and GPIO ports. The report does not state the RAM capacity, processor clock speed, storage setup, operating environment, or a complete list of peripherals.

Display and text expansion
The reported add-ons include VGA cards capable of 640×480 output. Hackaday also describes a VGA Plus v2 card working with a Text Mode card to provide 40-column text, with a second 6502 handling that text output. These figures describe expansion-card capabilities, not a complete system specification or a guarantee that every configuration has the same display features. Read the Hackaday report.

The project’s appeal is therefore its modular, build-oriented approach: GPIO, a 6502 architecture, and optional display hardware give enthusiasts room to explore a custom system. The available coverage does not establish how difficult assembly is, which software libraries are available, or what a complete build costs.

What the Commodore 64 Ultimate offers
Commodore says the C64 Ultimate “replicates the original hardware on modern FPGA technology, right down to the chip level.” That is the manufacturer’s description. Its product page specifies an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 core and 128 MB of DDR2 memory, with allocations for system memory, REU, GeoRAM, and a RAM disk. See Commodore’s specifications.
Video, storage, and connections
For displays, the product page lists HDMI output up to 1080p at 50 Hz for PAL or 60 Hz for NTSC, as well as analog CVBS, S-Video, and RGB through an 8-pin DIN connection. For modern connectivity, it lists USB-A and USB-C, built-in Wi-Fi, 100 Mbps Ethernet, and an internal microSD slot.

Can the Commodore 64 Ultimate run original C64 software?
That is the product’s stated target. Commodore advertises compatibility with over 99.9% of original software and peripherals. Treat this as a vendor claim, not an independent test result or a guarantee that every title or device will work. The cited product information does not provide a per-title compatibility table or test methodology. Commodore’s compatibility statement.
Does Vectron65 Plus run Commodore 64 games?
The available Vectron coverage does not establish that it runs C64 software, nor does it document interchangeable compatibility with C64 peripherals. Its 6502 processor alone is not evidence of C64 software compatibility; the reviewed report describes a distinct project and its expansions. Hackaday’s Vectron coverage.
Which one is better for retro computing?
Choose the C64 Ultimate for a C64-focused setup
The C64 Ultimate is the evidence-supported choice if you want a preconfigured C64-style machine with HDMI, modern file-loading options, and classic ports for the original ecosystem. Its compatibility figure remains Commodore’s advertised claim, so users with a specific title or peripheral should verify that item rather than assume universal support.
Choose Vectron65 Plus for a 6502 project
Vectron65 Plus is the more relevant direction if your interest is building or experimenting with a homebrew 6502 computer, GPIO, or modular VGA and text output. The sources do not establish its finished-product status, build requirements, price, or compatibility with C64 software, so those should not be assumed.

The information available for the two projects is asymmetric. Commodore publishes a product specification and order listing; the Vectron report documents selected hardware revisions and add-ons, but not a complete specification or retail offer. There is no sound basis here for comparing speed, total cost, reliability, or value.
