If a VHS cassette will not eject, turn the VCR off, unplug it, wait for the interval specified for your model, then reconnect power and press Eject once. Do not yank the cassette or pull on exposed tape. If the reset does not work, stop: internal manual removal is a model-specific service procedure, not a universal trick.
Try a safe power reset first

If the VCR is clicking, grinding, or moving the tape unpredictably, stop pressing Eject. Do not pull the cassette or any visible tape.

Leave it unplugged for the interval given by the manufacturer for your exact model. Sony’s U.S. support instructions specify 30 seconds; Dynabook/Toshiba specifies 2–3 minutes for the listed models. These are different model-specific instructions, not a universal standard. See Sony’s stuck-tape guidance and Dynabook/Toshiba’s guidance.

Reconnect power and press Eject once. If the cassette comes out, remove it gently; do not tug on loose tape.

If it remains stuck, stop and arrange service appropriate to the model. Sony warns that forcing a tape out can cause internal damage and directs users to service if the reset does not resolve the problem.

Why pulling or prying can make the problem worse
A cassette is held and moved by the VCR’s loading mechanism. If that mechanism has not returned to its eject position, pulling the cassette can damage internal parts or the tape. Sony’s warning is explicit: “There is a risk of hardware damage. If a tape is stuck in the VCR, do not try to forcibly remove it. Doing so can cause internal damage to the VCR.” Avoid inserting tools through the cassette slot or trying to grab exposed tape.

What manual removal means for a VCR
In service documentation, manual removal means mechanically unloading the deck so the cassette holder can be removed—not pulling a cassette through the slot. The procedure depends on the exact mechanism, including which parts must be removed and how the loading gears are moved.

JVC procedures apply only to specified models
The JVC service manual for HR-S3902US, HR-S3912UC, HR-S3912US, HR-S5902US, and HR-S5912UC describes disconnecting power, disassembling major parts, turning the loading-motor gear while controlling tape slack, removing the cassette-holder assembly, and winding the slack back into the cassette. The sequence is specific to those models. The manual is available through ManualMachine’s JVC service-manual copy.
Other mechanisms use different sequences
An Aiwa D33 video-mechanism manual preview describes a different approach involving removal of the loading motor, turning a gear to unsled the mechanism, using the capstan belt to take up slack, and turning the gear again to unload. That variation is why you should not turn a guessed gear or motor shaft in an unidentified VCR. The preview is hosted by eServiceInfo.

When internal work is not appropriate
Opening a VCR exposes delicate mechanical parts and internal electrical components. An incorrect sequence can damage the deck or cassette, and reassembly may introduce additional problems. Do not treat a screwdriver set or an online procedure for another model as a substitute for the exact service documentation.

If you cannot confirm the model-specific procedure, or are unsure how to perform it safely, stop and use a qualified technician.

For models covered by Dynabook/Toshiba’s guidance, the manufacturer directs users to authorized service if the tape remains stuck after the reset.
What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
The cited manufacturer instructions provide reset intervals and service escalation, while the service manuals demonstrate that internal unloading procedures vary. They do not establish a general success rate for power resets, a universal manual-eject sequence, or a statistic for damage caused by forceful removal. Treat a reset as a safe first attempt, not a guaranteed repair.
