Everyday Insurance Standard is a sum-insured contents policy for Australian strata owners, not a substitute for the owners corporation’s insurance of the building and common property. CHOICE’s accessible review lists a $20 million legal-liability limit and several optional covers, but the limits and exclusions need to be checked against the current policy documents before you decide whether the cover fits.
What this policy is—and what it is not
CHOICE describes Everyday Insurance Standard as a contents policy provided by Everyday Insurance and underwritten by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. CHOICE also describes it as a white-label Hollard policy and says its cover is identical to policies sold by Australian Seniors and Real Insurance. That description is CHOICE’s, not an independent comparison of policy terms.

For a strata lot, personal contents insurance is separate from insurance arranged by the owners corporation for the building and common property. Check who is responsible for fixtures and improvements: CHOICE says permanent fixtures are covered under this policy only when they are not insurable by the body corporate. Owners corporation insurance obligations also vary by state; Consumer Affairs Victoria’s guidance applies to Victoria and should not be treated as a nationwide statement of law.
What cover does the review list?
The policy uses a nominated sum insured for contents. CHOICE’s review page lists the following limits and features; they are summaries, not confirmation that a particular claim will be accepted. Check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and your policy schedule for the operative terms.

Where theft and absence conditions matter
CHOICE lists theft cover but identifies exclusions that can change the answer in a strata setting. Its visible examples include theft by residents; some theft from common or public areas, or from unenclosed parking at multi-residency sites; and theft connected with a business, profession or occupation. Check the exact location and circumstances in the PDS rather than assuming that theft is covered wherever belongings are kept.

The review says insurer approval is required if the home will be unoccupied for more than 60 days. It also describes conditions such as keeping the garden tidy, stopping regular mail or newspaper delivery, and arranging weekly checks. If an extended absence is planned, confirm the requirement and obtain any necessary approval before leaving.

How claims and settlement are described
CHOICE says out-of-hours claims can be lodged online or by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It describes settlement options as repair, replacement or payment of replacement value, with the applicable sums insured and sublimits still applying. The accessible review does not establish how a specific claim would be assessed, so use the current policy wording and ask the insurer about any unclear scenario before relying on a particular settlement method.

What to check before choosing
- Confirm the boundary with strata insurance. Ask the owners corporation or strata manager what the building policy covers, especially for fixtures and improvements, then identify any gap that your personal contents policy would need to fill.
- Set a realistic contents sum insured. Check how the policy expects you to value contents and whether your chosen sum insured is enough for the belongings you would need to replace.
- Read exclusions against your living arrangements. Pay particular attention to theft involving residents, shared or public areas, unenclosed parking, and business-related property.
- Check optional cover and per-item caps. If you need portable cover, motor-burnout cover or spoiled-food cover, confirm that the option is selected and that its limits suit the items or loss you have in mind.
- Compare the full contract and price. Review the current PDS, schedule, excesses, settlement basis and premium. CHOICE’s accessible page does not show its expert rating, full evaluation or cost, so it does not support a value-for-money verdict or price comparison.
How this differs from owners corporation strata insurance
ASIC’s streamlined PDS process concerns certain residential strata placements involving multiple insurers: the lead insurer prepares a PDS, while a supplementary PDS identifies the other insurers’ participation and risk shares. ASIC says whether an owners corporation is a retail or wholesale client must be determined case by case. These rules relate to owners-corporation placements; they are not a finding about this individual contents policy.
AFCA identifies residential strata as a class covered by the General Insurance Code of Practice, whose latest version is effective from 1 July 2021. AFCA describes residential strata title insurance as cover for an owners corporation. If you have a complaint about a consumer insurance policy and remain unhappy after contacting the insurer, ASIC points consumers toward AFCA.

Market availability also depends on location and property characteristics. The ACCC says its insurance monitoring role concluded on 30 June 2026 and that insurance is mainly regulated by ASIC and APRA. It has described availability and affordability concerns for some strata properties in northern Australia, influenced by factors including location, size, age and construction materials. That market context does not establish the price or availability of Everyday Insurance Standard for any particular owner.
