VBScript is Microsoft’s scripting language; malware authors can use it through Windows Script Host and other interpreters. The broader and usually more accurate term is VBScript malware. A script should be called a virus only when it exhibits virus-like replication through a host or application.
What is a VBScript virus?
NIST classifies scripting viruses as interpreted malware: an operating-system service or application executes their source code. On Windows, Windows Script Host can execute VBScript. NIST describes the distinction this way: “Scripting viruses are very similar to macro viruses. The primary difference is that a macro virus is written in a language understood by a particular application, such as a word processor, whereas a scripting virus is written in a language understood by a service run by the OS.”

In everyday usage, “VBScript virus” often means any malicious .vbs file. That shorthand can be misleading:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- VBScript: a legitimate scripting language used for automation and administration.
- VBScript malware: the broad category, including downloaders, persistence tools, reconnaissance scripts and remote-access components.
- Virus: malware that replicates through a host program or application context.
- Worm: self-contained malware that self-propagates. It is not the same category as a virus in NIST terminology.
A .vbs extension alone does not prove that a file is malicious, and the absence of that extension does not make a script safe. Attackers can rename files, hide them, or use a legitimate interpreter to run code delivered by another file.

How do VBScript viruses spread?
Social engineering and attachments
Historically, attackers relied on convincing messages that persuaded people to open an attachment or run a script. Microsoft reported that VBS/LoveLetter infected millions of computers in 2000 and used the email subject line “ILOVEYOU.” That figure describes the 2000 outbreak; it is not a measure of current VBScript infections.
Messaging platforms and cloud-hosted payloads
In a campaign reported by Microsoft on March 31, 2026, users received malicious VBS files through WhatsApp. The observed chain created hidden folders, downloaded additional scripts from cloud-storage services and used other Windows tools to continue the intrusion. This is one documented campaign, not a universal recipe for every VBScript threat.

Other delivery routes
Microsoft’s Trojan:VBS/Turla description records spear-phishing, watering-hole attacks and re-registered expired domains among delivery methods. The KopiLuwak framework, first observed in 2016, used native interpreters and scripts for reconnaissance, encrypted data theft, additional payload delivery and registry-based persistence.
What can a malicious VBS file do?
The script is often only the first-stage component. In Microsoft’s 2026 campaign report, the observed activity included:

- Creating hidden directories and placing files inside them.
- Renaming copies of legitimate utilities such as

- Attempting to weaken User Account Control (UAC).
- Adding registry-based persistence so code could run again.
- Installing unsigned MSI packages associated with remote access.
Microsoft notes that renamed utilities may still contain embedded OriginalFileName metadata. File names and extensions therefore provide weak evidence by themselves. Investigators should examine the process tree, command line, parent process, download source, signature status, registry activity and network connections.
Is VBScript still supported in Windows?
Yes, but Microsoft is phasing it out rather than removing it everywhere at once. Under Microsoft’s deprecation plan, Windows 11 version 24H2 provides VBScript as a Feature on Demand and initially enables it by default. A later phase is intended to disable it by default, followed by removal from Windows. Microsoft’s announcement places the later transition around 2027 while describing the final-removal timing as to be determined.

That timeline does not establish one removal date for every Windows edition or release. Organizations should check the current Microsoft timeline and test which scripts, logon processes and administrative tools depend on VBScript before changing the feature state.
How to protect a PC from VBScript malware
For home users
- Do not open unexpected
.vbs, archive or installer attachments, even when they arrive through a familiar service such as email or WhatsApp. - Verify surprising messages through a separate channel rather than replying to the message or using its links.
- Keep Windows, Microsoft Defender or another reputable endpoint-protection product, and browser software up to date.
- If you ran a suspicious script, disconnect the device from networks when practical and contact qualified incident-response or IT support. Do not delete evidence before advice is given.
For organizations
Microsoft recommends layered controls focused on execution behavior:
Best Value
- AWARD WINNING Antivirus, anti-malware, anti-spyware & more
- 24/7 REAL TIME PROTECTION against emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses- without slowing you down.
- PROTECTS YOUR DEVICES ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS: Get cyber protection for your computers, smartphones, or tablets- Compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
- DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL INSTANTLY
- UNMATCHED THREAT DETECTION: We found malware on 40 percent of devices that already had a third-party antivirus installed.
- Restrict
wscript.exe,cscript.exeandmshta.exefrom untrusted paths using application-control or endpoint policies. - Alert on unusual command-line flags, hidden or renamed copies of Windows utilities, and unexpected utility execution.
- Monitor downloads from cloud services when they are followed by script execution or persistence changes.
- Audit registry modifications, repeated UAC-tampering attempts and unsigned MSI installation.
- Train users to treat unexpected attachments on familiar messaging platforms as suspicious.
- Correlate indicators with current threat intelligence; domains, file hashes and infrastructure can change.
These controls reduce exposure and improve detection, but no single restriction guarantees that every script-based intrusion will be blocked.
What to check when a VBS infection is suspected
- Preserve context: record the original message, attachment name, download URL, timestamps and the account that opened it.
- Contain the device: isolate it from corporate networks while preserving access needed for response.
- Review execution: inspect process trees and command lines for Windows Script Host,
cmd.exe,mshta.exe, renamed utilities or MSI installers. - Check persistence: examine relevant registry run locations, scheduled tasks, startup folders and newly created hidden directories.
- Look for follow-on activity: search for cloud downloads, outbound connections, credential access and remote-control software.
- Remediate with qualified help: reset credentials from a known-clean device and reimage systems when the scope or persistence cannot be confidently determined.
Are VBScript viruses still common?
There is no reliable current prevalence rate established by the cited sources. The evidence supports two narrower conclusions: VBScript-powered outbreaks have caused major historical damage, and VBScript remains a useful execution component in modern, multi-stage attacks. Current risk depends on delivery methods, endpoint controls, user behavior and the rest of the attacker’s toolchain—not simply on whether a file ends in .vbs.
The Bottom Line
VBScript is legitimate technology, but attackers can abuse its interpreters to launch downloads, persistence and remote access. Treat unexpected scripts as untrusted, monitor the surrounding behavior, and plan for Microsoft’s phased VBScript deprecation rather than assuming the feature has already disappeared.
