A former contributor says the service shut down in May 2018, while OnMSFT reported invitation and beta activity in 2019. Those conflicting historical reports do not prove that Bing Distill remains available in 2026, and no verifiable current Microsoft status page or endpoint is established.
What Bing Distill was
Bing Distill was a Microsoft community-answer feature connected to questions people asked through Bing. Microsoft’s June 2015 news archive lists “Bing Distill and Bing Listens” as ways for students and teachers at E2 to send ideas to Bing.

A contemporaneous post reproducing Bing-team material described Distill as invitation-only. Participants could respond to questions being asked on Bing and vote on answers. The Microsoft archive confirms the feature’s existence and education-event context; the more detailed description of user functions comes from reproduced Microsoft copy rather than a complete, standalone product specification.

The available evidence does not establish that it is active today. The clearest shutdown claim comes from James Lenihan III, who identifies himself on LinkedIn as a former Microsoft Bing Distill contributor and says the service was shut down in May 2018. That is firsthand retrospective evidence, but it is self-published and not an official Microsoft closure announcement.
#1 Best Overall
The timeline is complicated by two OnMSFT reports from 2019:
| Date | What was reported | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| June 2015 | Microsoft’s archive named Bing Distill and Bing Listens in an E2 education-event entry. | Confirms the feature existed. |
| May 2018 | Former contributor James Lenihan III said Distill was shut down. | A firsthand shutdown claim, not an official closure notice. |
| August 2019 | OnMSFT said the website was live and users could request an invitation. | Shows a Distill-branded invitation flow was reported at that time. |
| October 2019 | OnMSFT reported that invitations were being sent for a beta. | Shows reported beta activity, but not continuous operation after 2018 or availability now. |
Because the 2019 reports do not document what happened afterward, they cannot be used as evidence that Distill survived into 2026. The most accurate answer is therefore: Bing Distill is not verified as alive.

Why the 2019 invitations do not settle the question
A short-lived relaunch, private beta, or invitation experiment could explain why a former contributor described a 2018 shutdown and a technology publication later observed invitations. None of the cited material establishes that the beta became a maintained public service. There is also no identified official Microsoft announcement confirming a permanent relaunch or a current service status.
An invitation email reproduced by OnMSFT described Distill as “a community where people come together to create high-quality, accurate, unbiased, and trustworthy answers to questions millions of people ask.” The wording was signed by the Bing Distill Team. “Millions” is promotional language in that email, not a measured user or question count.

Do not confuse Distill with Bing’s later summarization features
Microsoft’s 2023 Bing guide uses distill as an ordinary verb for summarizing information. That wording describes newer Bing behavior; it is not evidence that the historical, named community feature called Bing Distill was revived.
When you see a current Bing page or guide discussing the ability to distill information, check whether “distill” is a lowercase descriptive term or the proper name Bing Distill. The two references are not interchangeable.
Quick Recap

What readers can conclude
- Bing Distill was a real, invitation-based community feature associated with Bing questions.
- Microsoft documented its existence in June 2015, particularly in an education-event context.
- A former contributor reports a May 2018 shutdown, but Microsoft has not been cited as publishing an official closure notice.
- OnMSFT reported invitation and beta activity in 2019; that evidence does not demonstrate current operation.
- As of 2026, the cited evidence does not verify an active Bing Distill service or a reliable public sign-up route.
How to evaluate claims that it is “alive”
- Check the date. A 2019 invitation, screenshot, or cached post describes historical activity, not present availability.
- Look for an official Microsoft source. A current Microsoft support page, product announcement, or working Microsoft-controlled endpoint would be stronger evidence than an old invitation email.
- Confirm the product name. References to Bing summarizing or distilling information may concern newer Bing features rather than the Distill community.
- Treat access claims cautiously. An isolated invitation or archived page does not show that the service is broadly open, maintained, or operating continuously.
