Vanilla JavaScript PWA for a School Marketplace: What Aksara-Mart’s Build Shows

Aksara-Mart’s author reports a small gzipped payload and fast first render, but the figures are not independently verified. Here’s what its vanilla JavaScript PWA does—and doesn’t—prove about performance.

Aksara-Mart’s author reports building the school marketplace with vanilla JavaScript, modular CSS and Progressive Web App techniques, citing a gzipped JavaScript-and-CSS payload below 48 KB and a First Contentful Paint of about 320 ms on school 4G. Those are project-reported figures, not independently verified benchmarks—and they do not show that frameworks are inherently slow. The more useful lesson is how payload, navigation, caching, devices and implementation choices work together when students have budget Android phones and crowded Wi-Fi.

What Aksara-Mart built—and what its performance figures mean

In his DEV Community article, Achmad Junaedi says the team “threw out all third-party frontend frameworks” and built the interface with “pure Vanilla JavaScript, modern modular CSS, and Progressive Web App (PWA) standards.” He describes a multi-file project containing an HTML shell, modular JavaScript and CSS, a service worker, and a web app manifest. The service worker caches app-shell resources so the catalog can open in areas with poor connectivity.

Junaedi reports a combined gzipped JavaScript and CSS payload below 48 KB, First Contentful Paint (FCP) around 320 ms on school 4G, and “Instantaneous” Time to Interactive (TTI). These are claims in the project article, not independently validated test results. The retrieved article information does not establish a test device, repeated-run method, or publication year for the figures. “Instantaneous” is qualitative wording, not a precise TTI measurement. Read Junaedi’s Aksara-Mart account.

The numbers are useful as a description of what the author says the project achieved, but they cannot establish that vanilla JavaScript caused the result. The source does not compare Aksara-Mart with a framework-based version under controlled conditions, holding features, device, browser, network, cache state and measurement method constant.

What a PWA adds—and what it does not require

A Progressive Web App is a web application that can use web capabilities to support installation and, depending on its design, offline use or background behavior. A service worker is commonly used to enable offline experiences, but MDN notes that it is not a prerequisite for installing a PWA. Nor does “PWA” mean “vanilla JavaScript”: it describes capabilities and delivery patterns, not a rule against frameworks.

For a school marketplace, the practical aim is to keep essential parts of the experience usable when connectivity is unreliable. An app shell can provide the interface structure while cached resources load; data that must be current—such as availability or prices—needs a deliberate freshness strategy rather than being treated like static code. MDN’s PWA overview explains the broad capabilities and the role of service workers.

Teacher Created Resources SpellChecked Card Game (EP66111)
  • Spellchecked is a fun way for the whole family to help young learners improve their spelling. Each box contains 200 Spelling cards and 8 Spellchecker cards, which are keys that players can use to check each other’s answers. An easy-to-follow instruction sheet is included.
  • The Spelling cards are divided into 8 color-coded decks and 4 ability levels. Players choose a deck to play. Each card shows a familiar image, gives the first letter of the word, and asks the player to identify the image and spell the word for points.
  • If the player cannot spell the word correctly, the card is turned over to reveal three possible spellings. If the player can choose the correct spelling, they receive a lesser amount of points. The first player to reach 30 points is the winner.
  • Spellchecked helps young learners recognize spelling patterns, use critical-thinking strategies, and learn from misspellings. The game plays to young learners’ strengths in identifying images and choosing a correct spelling from three possibilities.
  • For anyone ages 8 and over in groups of 2–8 players. Play it with 3rd graders or 6th graders. Play it with friends or aunts or grandparents. The more advanced the level, the tougher the words are to spell and the correct answers are worth fewer points.

Why the JavaScript choice alone does not decide speed

Frameworks can add runtime or bundle overhead, but the amount depends on what an application ships and how it is built. Performance also depends on rendering and navigation architecture, the work done before a user can interact, network conditions, caching, and the quality of the implementation. A small initial bundle is valuable, but it is only one part of the user experience.

The Ele.me case study from web.dev illustrates why architecture matters. It discusses multi-page versus single-page navigation, critical-resource preloading and service-worker precaching. For Ele.me’s own site, the case study reports loading-time reductions of 11.6% on precached pages and 6.35% on average across pages. Those are Ele.me-specific results; they are not evidence that vanilla JavaScript produces those gains or that the same improvements will occur in another marketplace. Read the Ele.me PWA case study.

How to compare a vanilla build with a framework build

A meaningful comparison changes the implementation approach while keeping the user journey and test conditions as consistent as possible. Otherwise, a faster result may reflect a smaller feature set, a warmer cache, a better network or a different device rather than the choice of framework.

  1. Match the experience. Test the same screens, content, interactions and data in both versions.
  2. Fix the conditions. Use the same representative phone, browser and network profile, and record whether each run starts with an empty or populated cache.
  3. Report what is shipped. Separate JavaScript and CSS payloads, state whether sizes are compressed, and distinguish first visits from repeat visits.
  4. Measure useful milestones. Record meaningful rendering and interaction timings with a defined method. Avoid labels such as “instant” unless they correspond to a stated threshold.
  5. Check the broader product. Assess navigation, deep links, offline behavior, browser and device compatibility, accessibility, and the ongoing effort required to maintain the code.

MDN’s PWA best practices include adapting across browsers and devices, supporting offline use and deep links, making the app fast, and ensuring accessibility. Those criteria matter alongside bundle size: a fast first render is not a good trade if users cannot navigate the catalog reliably or use it with assistive technology.

When vanilla JavaScript is a sensible fit

A vanilla implementation can suit a focused interface when the team can keep the code understandable, deliver only what the experience needs, and provide the routing, state handling and accessibility features the product requires. Modular files and a small app shell may help keep responsibilities clear, but “no framework” does not automatically mean less code, easier maintenance or better performance.

A framework may be the better choice when its conventions and ecosystem help a team build and maintain a larger application. The decision should follow the product’s requirements and the team’s ability to ship a fast, accessible experience—not a blanket assumption that one approach always wins. Aksara-Mart is a useful example of one author-reported implementation for a constrained school setting, not a controlled verdict on frameworks as a category.
