Valve’s new Steam Controller pairs conventional thumbsticks with trackpads, gyro controls and four rear grip buttons, with Steam Input at the center of its design. Dot Esports reports a U.S. price of $99 and a May 4, 2026 launch date; that report does not establish current stock or pricing in other regions.
What is the new Steam Controller?
It is a Valve gamepad designed around Steam Input for playing Steam games on PC, laptops, Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and other devices. Valve’s Steam Controller product page describes its two trackpads as another way to control games designed for mouse and keyboard. That makes the layout broader than a conventional stick-and-button controller, though it does not guarantee that every game or device will use every control in the same way.

What controls and features does it add?
| Control or feature | What Valve specifies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbsticks | Two full-size TMR magnetic thumbsticks with capacitive touch | Familiar stick aiming and movement sit alongside touch-sensitive inputs. Valve describes TMR sticks as designed for improved feel, responsiveness and long-term reliability; this is a product claim, not an independent durability test. |
| Trackpads | Two 34.5 mm square trackpads, with haptic feedback and configurable click strength | They offer an alternative for mouse-oriented games and can provide additional configurable inputs. |
| Motion | Six-axis IMU for gyro input; capacitive touch on the sticks and two Grip Sense areas | Motion and touch can add input options when configured through Steam Input. |
| Rear controls | Four assignable grip buttons | Players can map extra commands to the grips rather than taking a thumb off a stick or trackpad. |
| Haptics | Four motors: two in the trackpads and two high-output motors in the grips | Haptic feedback is built into both the trackpad area and grips. |
These are Valve-published specifications, not comparative test results. Valve says specifications may change before availability.

How does it connect and charge?
The included Steam Controller Puck serves two purposes: it is the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter and the magnetic charging interface. Valve says one puck can support up to four controllers and connects to a PC over USB-C. The controller also supports Bluetooth and USB-C tethered play.
- 2.4GHz wireless: Connect through the puck.
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.2 is the minimum; Valve recommends Bluetooth 5.0 or higher.
- USB-C: Play with a wired connection.
Valve lists an 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery and estimates 35+ hours of gameplay. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent battery test; Valve notes that battery life is reduced when tracking Steam Frame.

Will it work with Steam Deck, PC and other devices?
Valve says the controller is designed for Steam games across PC, laptop, Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and other devices. The product page also specifies Bluetooth and wired USB-C connections, but compatibility in practice can depend on the game, operating system and input configuration. The broad device list should not be read as a claim that every feature works identically everywhere.
macOS limitation
Valve warns that some Steam titles relying on Apple’s Game Controller framework are not compatible on macOS. Its product page gives no resolution timeline, so macOS players should check the specific game’s compatibility rather than assume the controller removes that limitation.

Valve’s November 12, 2025 announcement of its new Steam hardware had said the hardware was expected to begin shipping in early 2026. It named the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, EU and Australia, with Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan served through KOMODO. That was an initial plan, not confirmation of present availability in each market.

- Consider it if you want Steam Input customization, gyro and rear-button options, or trackpads for games that benefit from mouse-like control.
- Think carefully if you want a straightforward conventional gamepad and are unlikely to use trackpads, motion or configurable grip controls.
- Check compatibility first if you play on macOS, especially titles that use Apple’s Game Controller framework.
The specifications establish an unusually broad set of control options, but they do not establish comparative comfort, performance, durability or value against other controllers. Those judgments depend on hands-on use and the games and devices you play.
