A value proposition explains who your business serves, what useful result customers get, and why your offer is a credible fit compared with their alternatives. To put one together, define a specific customer and need, identify a meaningful benefit and difference, then test the wording with customers and check that your business can deliver what it promises.

What a value proposition means

A value proposition is about the value customers receive from doing business with you—not just the product or service you sell. A list such as “we offer bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation” names services, but does not explain which customer they help, what improves for that customer, or why the business is a suitable choice.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) describes a value proposition in a lean business plan as a clear statement of the unique value a company brings to the market. In practice, it connects four things: a defined customer, a need or problem, a concrete benefit, and a credible reason the offer may be preferable to relevant alternatives. It does not have to claim that your business is objectively the best.

How to build a value proposition

Use the following sequence as a practical writing aid, not as an official SBA formula. Each step gives the next one something specific to build on.

#1 Best Overall
Income and Expense Log Book - Bookkeeping Record Book/Tracker
  • Income And Expense Log Book: This Income and Expense Record Book(8.5" x 10.5") is a necessary item for any small business owner or entrepreneur. It is an essential part of any business - helping you understand your overall earnings to determine if you are profitable.
  • Daily Tracking and Weekly Overview: let our log tell you if you are profitable today! There are two pages per week to help you you track your income and expenses. At the end of each day or week, you can note whether you made a profit or a loss for the day.
  • Clear P&L Statement For Your Business: This income and expense book makes it easy to see your expenses and how they fluctuate from time to time. This makes it easy for you to decide where you can cut back on expenses and assess your total annual net profit.
  • Main Features: Expense Review + Income Review + Weekly Pages + Summary of The Year + Twin-Wire Binding + Waterproof Cover + Rounded corner design + Thicker paper
  • Effective Organization: This budget book has a twin-wire binding and you can easily lay it flat at 180°. This effective design can help you work better and bring you great convenience in the process of using.
  1. Choose a customer group. Name a group specific enough that a person can recognize whether the offer is meant for them. “Local restaurants with fewer than 20 employees” is more useful for drafting than “everyone who needs business services.” The SBA recommends defining the target customer and considering the niche the business fills.
  2. Describe the customer’s need or problem. Be clear about the circumstance that makes the offer relevant. A customer may need to reduce a recurring task, solve a service-access problem, or reach a particular outcome. Avoid assuming that a problem matters just because it is inconvenient to you; check that customers recognize it.
  3. State the customer’s benefit. Describe what gets better for the customer in plain language. The product or service is the means; the outcome is the value. Replace a feature such as “online appointment booking” with the benefit it enables, if supported—for example, “customers can book outside business hours.”
  4. Identify a meaningful difference. Compare your offer with the alternatives that the same customer actually considers. A difference matters when it changes the customer’s outcome, convenience, experience, access, or perceived value. The SBA recommends examining competitors’ strengths and weaknesses and what customers pay for alternatives. Do not use claims such as “best” unless you can substantiate them.
  5. Write a concise first draft. A useful pattern is: For [specific customer] who needs [problem or desired outcome], [business or offering] provides [benefit] through [credible difference]. This is a suggested structure, not a required slogan. Keep the language clear enough that a prospective customer can understand it without explanation.
  6. Ask customers whether it is clear and relevant. The SBA identifies surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and in-depth interviews as direct-research methods. Ask what they think the offer does, whether the need matters to them, and what they would otherwise use. A small customer test or prototype can also help you learn before committing fully. Revise the customer, problem, benefit, or supporting proof if people misunderstand the offer or do not value the outcome.
  7. Check that the business can deliver. Make sure the promise is compatible with your resources, sales and service channels, customer relationships, costs, and revenue. A proposition that attracts customers but cannot be delivered consistently is not a sustainable business promise.

How to assess customer demand and alternatives

A proposition is stronger when it reflects the market customers face, rather than a difference the owner simply prefers. The SBA recommends researching demand, market size, economic indicators, customer location, market saturation, and prices customers pay for alternatives. General research can help establish context; direct research can answer questions about your particular customers.

For competitive analysis, focus on businesses and substitutes that serve the same customer segment and need. A nearby business in another category may not be a relevant competitor, while a do-it-yourself approach or postponing the purchase may be a real alternative. Compare your draft against the options a target customer would actually weigh.

Compare draft propositions with a decision checklist

When you have multiple versions, assess each against the same questions. This framework organizes the SBA’s market and competition guidance alongside the practical checks needed to make a promise credible.

  • Customer fit: Is the customer group defined clearly enough to identify?
  • Need fit: Does the statement address a need customers recognize as meaningful?
  • Benefit: Does it say what practical result the customer gets?
  • Differentiation: Is the difference relevant to that customer and distinct from alternatives?
  • Evidence: Do customer conversations, feedback, or observed behavior support the claim?
  • Price and access: Have you considered what alternatives cost and how customers reach or buy them?
  • Delivery feasibility: Can the business sustain the promise through its channels, resources, and cost structure?

Fit the proposition into the business model

A value proposition is not a standalone marketing line. In the SBA’s lean business plan, it sits alongside customer segments, customer relationships, channels, cost structure, and revenue streams. Those elements affect one another: the customers you choose influence how you reach and serve them, while the costs and revenue model affect whether the promised value can be maintained.

Where small-business owners can get feedback

If you want another person to review the proposition as part of a broader business plan, the SBA identifies SCORE and Small Business Development Centers among its resource partners and says they can provide free feedback. The SBA’s guidance is U.S.-oriented; owners elsewhere can look for equivalent local small-business advisory services.
