For VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026, 16 teams begin in four GSL groups; the top two in each group reach an eight-team double-elimination playoff. Group and most playoff matches are best-of-three, while the lower final and grand final are best-of-five. Two losses eliminate a team. Riot’s published materials reviewed here do not specify the draw, playoff seeding and opening pairings, or group tiebreak rules, so those details should not be assumed.
How the 2026 Champions field is formed
Champions Shanghai is the 2026 season-ending global VALORANT event. It has 16 teams, with four representatives from each VCT territory: Americas, EMEA, Pacific, and China. In each territory, two places go to the top finishers in Stage 2 playoffs and two to Championship Point earners, according to Riot’s 2026 Champions Shanghai handbook and season overview.

How the group stage works
The 16 teams are divided into four GSL groups, with one team from each of the four territories in every group. Group matches are best-of-three, and the top two teams in each group advance to playoffs. The other two teams in each group are eliminated. Riot’s event guide puts the loss rule simply: “Lose two and you’re out.”

What happens in the playoffs
The eight group-stage qualifiers enter a double-elimination bracket. A team that loses once in playoffs has a route through the lower bracket; a second playoff loss eliminates it. Playoff matches are best-of-three except for the lower final and grand final, which are best-of-five.
Riot’s published format does not state the playoff seeds, opening-round pairings, or how group finishers are matched. It therefore does not establish that group winners receive a particular advantage or that any specific groups cross in the opening round. The announced format supports the bracket structure and match lengths, but not those matchup details.
