Choose solo if you want to set your own pace and play whenever you like. Choose co-op if you have friends who want to explore, build, and progress through the world together. Valheim officially supports both, and Iron Gate recommends playing with friends when possible—but that is the developer’s preference, not a sign that solo play is incomplete. For a group that cannot reliably meet at the same time, a persistent dedicated server can keep a world available when its usual host is offline.
What changes between solo and co-op?
The core activity is the same: gather resources, build, survive hostile environments, and fight the Forsaken. The main difference is whether you take on that loop alone or share it with other players, and how you arrange access to the world. You are choosing a way to organize play, not between a supported game mode and an unsupported one.

Iron Gate’s FAQ confirms that Valheim can be played as either single-player or co-op. Its 1.0 FAQ, dated July 1, 2026, describes the game as intended for 1–10 players. That is the official player range, not a recommendation that every world needs a large group. One player is within the stated range; a small group is, too.
Iron Gate puts its own preference plainly: “No, Valheim can be played either as a singleplayer or a co-op game.” The same FAQ adds, “But we would of course highly recommend you to play it with a few friends if possible!” Read those together: solo is supported, while playing with friends is the developer’s recommendation. Neither statement proves that every player will find co-op more enjoyable.

| What matters to you | Solo | Co-op |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | You choose when to play and how quickly to move through the game. | Your shared sessions depend on the group’s availability and preferences. |
| Company | You play without other players in the world. | You can share exploration, building, and progression with friends. |
| World access | You can play your own world on your schedule. | A player-hosted session is available when its host starts it; a dedicated server can provide a persistent world. |
| Difficulty comparison | Official sources do not quantify how difficulty compares with co-op. | Official sources do not establish that co-op is easier, faster, or less resource-intensive. |
The practical decision is therefore less about finding a universally “best” mode and more about what you want from your play sessions. If your top priority is playing on your own timetable, solo avoids coordinating with anyone else. If the shared experience is the point, co-op brings friends into exploration, building, and progression. If you want to play together but cannot be online together, the hosting choice becomes part of the decision.
When solo is the better fit
You want complete control of your schedule
Solo is the straightforward choice if your playtime is unpredictable or you do not want to coordinate sessions. You can stop and resume according to your own routine instead of waiting for friends or deciding together what to do next. This is particularly useful if you want to treat a session as something you can start when time allows, rather than an appointment with a group.

It does not depend on a claim that solo is quicker or easier; Iron Gate’s official sources do not compare those things. It follows from the simple fact that a solo session does not require other players to be available at the same time.
You prefer making decisions independently
Playing alone means you choose how to approach exploration, building, and progression without needing agreement from a group. That can suit players who want a self-directed experience. It does not mean the game has a separate solo campaign: the official FAQ describes Valheim as playable in either single-player or co-op.
Think about whether you enjoy having other people involved in routine choices as well as big milestones. In co-op, friends can share the world and its activities, but they also bring their own preferences about what to do during a session. Solo removes that coordination. That is a difference in how you want to spend your time, not evidence that either mode contains more complete content.
You do not need to set up shared access
If you are playing by yourself, you do not need to decide whether to use a player-hosted multiplayer session or a dedicated server for friends. Iron Gate’s FAQ says it does not provide official servers; that does not prevent solo play, which the game supports directly.

Player-hosted sessions are an official option for co-op, and a dedicated server is relevant only if your group wants the world to persist independently of a player-hosted session. If you do not need a shared world, that extra setup is not part of the solo-versus-co-op choice.
When co-op is the better fit
You want to share the game with friends
Co-op lets you explore, build, and pursue boss progression together. Iron Gate says it recommends playing with a few friends if possible. Treat that as the developer’s preference rather than a universal verdict: whether company improves the experience depends on what you enjoy.

For some players, the appeal is having company while working through the game’s loop; for others, independent pacing is more important. The sources support saying that co-op enables shared play, not that it automatically makes every activity better. If you already have friends who want to play, the useful question is whether you want to share the experience and can agree on how the world will be accessed.
Your group can agree on how to play
Before starting, it helps to discuss when people expect to play and how they want to handle the shared world. A group that enjoys making plans together may find co-op a natural fit. If members want to advance at very different times, decide whether one person will host sessions or whether persistent server access matters more.
That conversation is about expectations, not a technical requirement. A group can choose to meet for hosted sessions, or it can look into a persistent world if availability between group sessions matters. A server can address access when the host is away, but it does not decide what the group wants to build, when members should play, or how they want to coordinate progression. Those are group choices.
You are comfortable choosing a hosting arrangement
Valheim supports player-hosted peer-to-peer sessions as well as dedicated servers. A dedicated server is not required for co-op. The key distinction is availability: a player-hosted world is tied to the host running the session, while Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide describes a persistent world. For groups whose schedules do not overlap, persistence can make it easier to access the shared world at different times.
Iron Gate’s FAQ describes starting a public or private peer-to-peer session. In practical terms, a player-hosted session is a straightforward option when the host and friends expect to play together. The dedicated-server guide describes a different arrangement for a world that stays persistent. Neither option is presented by the sources as the mandatory way to play co-op.
For a group, the first question is not “Which server provider should we buy?” It is “Does the world need to be available when the person who starts the session is offline?” If the answer is no, player hosting may fit the group’s schedule. If yes, a dedicated server is an option to consider. Iron Gate does not provide official servers, and the cited guidance does not name a vendor as necessary or recommend one.

Use a player-hosted session when you play together
Iron Gate’s FAQ describes public and private peer-to-peer sessions. This is a practical starting point when one player can host and the group expects to play at the same time. Friends cannot access that session while its host is away, so the group should be comfortable with the host’s availability.
For a group that reliably meets together, this avoids setting up persistent access solely for the sake of having a shared world. It is also an official way to play with friends, so there is no need to assume that co-op requires a dedicated server. Decide whether the session should be public or private based on who you want to be able to join; Iron Gate’s FAQ confirms both session types, but it does not provide further privacy or access details.

Consider a dedicated server when access needs to persist
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide describes running a persistent world. That can suit a group that wants the world to remain available even when the usual player-host is not playing. It is an optional setup choice, not a prerequisite for multiplayer, and the official FAQ says Iron Gate does not provide official servers. The sources do not establish a particular hosting provider as necessary or recommended.
For a group with staggered schedules, persistence may be more useful than trying to find a single time everyone can attend. That is a practical implication of the two hosting descriptions, not a guarantee that every group will prefer the server approach. A persistent world addresses availability; it does not turn co-op into a scheduled activity automatically, and it does not resolve differences about how group members want to use the world.
The official dedicated-server guide also lists world-modifier configuration and support for crossplay through a server argument. Those details matter when setting up a server, but they are not reasons every group needs one. This comparison is about choosing a mode and access arrangement, so technical port and command-line instructions are better handled in a dedicated setup guide rather than treated as prerequisites here.
Do not assume persistence solves every group issue
A persistent world addresses whether the world can be available between sessions; it does not settle group expectations about who plays, what gets built, or how progression is shared. Agreeing on those expectations matters more than choosing a server type if the group wants a coordinated experience.
Likewise, a player-hosted session is not a lesser form of co-op simply because it is not persistent. It fits a different schedule: the host starts the session when the group is ready to play. Think of hosting as an availability decision. Choose the arrangement that fits your group rather than assuming that a dedicated server is the default or that paid hosting is required.
Playing with friends on different platforms
Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ, dated July 1, 2026, says crossplay is supported across platforms. The Crossplay FAQ, dated February 7, 2025, gives more specific joining and Xbox-server details. Platform setup can affect how you connect, so confirm the relevant options before the group commits to a shared world.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Crossplay answers whether people on different platforms can play together; it is not the same as moving a save file between platforms. If the group spans platforms, check both questions separately: how to join the session, and whether the save arrangement fits the person who may switch devices. The official guidance supports crossplay across platforms, but it does not promise universal save-file syncing.
Joining with a code
- Have the host start the world or server. For a dedicated server, crossplay must be enabled when required for players on different platforms.
- Get the join code. The Crossplay FAQ says the code can be copied from the pause menu.
- Share the code with your friend. Send it through a channel your group uses.
- Join the game. The friend enters the code through the game’s Join Game option.
These steps reflect the interface described in Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ dated February 7, 2025; labels or behavior may change in later game updates. The key practical point is that the FAQ describes a join-code route for connecting players on different platforms. It does not mean every platform issue is solved by the code: for a dedicated server, the relevant crossplay setting must also be enabled.

Xbox and dedicated servers
According to that Crossplay FAQ, an Xbox console cannot host a dedicated server. Xbox players can join a dedicated server if crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox side and the server. This is a hosting limitation for Xbox consoles, not a statement that Xbox players cannot take part in co-op.
If an Xbox player is part of the group, separate the question of hosting from the question of joining. The console limitation applies to running a dedicated server; the same FAQ explicitly says Xbox players can join one under the crossplay condition. The 1.0 FAQ’s broader statement is that crossplay is supported across platforms. For the exact Xbox server caveat, the Crossplay FAQ is the specific source, dated February 7, 2025.
What to know about saves across Xbox and PC
Crossplay and cross-platform save syncing are separate questions. Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ says a player can access saves between Xbox and PC when the PC version is launched through Microsoft Store. It also says there is no other cross-platform save-file synchronization. Do not assume a save will follow you between platforms outside that stated Microsoft Store PC/Xbox case.
This matters if your group plans to switch platforms or expects to continue the same save in more than one place. The supported case is specific: Xbox and PC when the PC game is launched through Microsoft Store. The FAQ does not support a broader promise that all PC storefronts or other platform combinations share saves. It is safest to treat the ability to join friends and the ability to carry a save between devices as two distinct checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is solo easier than co-op?
The official sources describe Valheim’s gameplay and supported player count, but do not provide a current measurement comparing solo and co-op difficulty. They do not establish that one mode is objectively easier, faster, or less grindy. Your decision should therefore rest on schedule, company, and world access—not on a promised difficulty advantage.
That distinction is important when comparing recommendations. Iron Gate’s preference for playing with friends is not a difficulty result, and the official range of 1–10 players is not evidence that a larger group will have a particular advantage. Iron Gate’s official sources do not quantify how workload or challenge changes by player count. Choose based on the kind of sessions you want, rather than expecting a guaranteed easier path from either mode.
A quick decision checklist
- Pick solo if you want independent pacing, flexible play times, and no coordination with a group.
- Pick co-op if you have friends who want to share exploration, building, and progression.
- Start with player hosting if your group expects to play together and one player can run the session.
- Look into a dedicated server if friends need the world to remain available when the player-host is offline.
- Check crossplay settings and save limitations if your group spans platforms or you plan to switch between Xbox and PC.
A simple way to apply the checklist is to answer these questions in order: Do you want to play alone or with friends? If with friends, can the host and group usually play at the same time? If not, does the world need to remain available between their sessions? Finally, if players use different platforms, have they checked crossplay and the save-file limitation separately? Those answers point to solo, a player-hosted session, or an optional persistent server without treating any one setup as universally best.
