The Intricate Key is crafted rather than dropped. You must find a Mould, smelt five Bloodgold Ingots, cast the key at a level 4 Black Forge, then finish it with five Liquid Frost in a Frost Foundry. A Grappling Hook is also required because the Gates of Mörkhalla sit above ground level on a tower.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The exact number of keys needed is not consistent across current guide and wiki snippets. Some accounts describe one key for an entrance, while others say three keys are consumed as you move through Mörkhalla. Plan your materials, but verify the rule against the wiki or your current patch before spending rare Bloodgold.

The route crosses several Deep North systems, so gather the materials in stages instead of searching for a single chest containing the key. The finished item is produced in two crafting steps: a Black Forge creates Cast: Intricate Key, and a Frost Foundry turns that cast into the usable Intricate Key.
| Requirement | Amount or level | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Mould | 1 | Eyeless Ones, Elakings without a lantern, or breakable rubble in the Winding Tunnels |
| Bloodgold Ingot | 5 | Smelted from Petrified Tissue taken from petrified Gammeltrolls |
| Liquid Frost | 5 | Made by converting Ice in a Frigid Kiln |
| Black Forge | Level 4 | Required to cast the key |
| Frost Foundry | Required | Finishes the cast with Liquid Frost |
| Grappling Hook | 1 | Needed to reach the raised Mörkhalla entrance |
The recipe figures above are reported by wiki and guide snippets for the Deep North content associated with Valheim 1.0. The current patch was not independently verified, so check your in-game recipe and the current wiki if a station rejects an ingredient or shows a different cost.
Step 1: Find the Mould
The Mould is the gating item for the entire process. It is not a guaranteed drop, so entering the Deep North with only one possible source can leave you waiting for a random drop. You have three reported routes.
Defeat Eyeless Ones
Eyeless Ones can drop the Mould. This is the most direct combat route if you are already fighting these enemies while exploring the Deep North. Because the drop is not guaranteed, bring enough supplies to continue searching rather than assuming the first encounter will provide it.
Look for an Elaking without a lantern
Elakings that do not carry a lantern are also reported as Mould carriers. Check the enemy’s equipment before relying on this route; the lantern distinction matters in the available drop information. As with Eyeless Ones, the item is a chance drop, not a quest reward.
Clear the Winding Tunnels
The Winding Tunnels provide a second type of search: the Mould can appear when you break wooden rubble and debris along tunnel walls and floors. A Valheim Wiki entry associated with Weird Gloop reports a 13.8% chance from wardrobe shafts and a 12.0% chance from rubble piles. Those percentages are snippet-level figures and are not guaranteed per dungeon, world or run.

Clearing the tunnels is therefore a time-versus-combat decision. If you are already inside, destroy every breakable pile and inspect the tunnel edges rather than stopping after the obvious route. If you are choosing where to spend time, compare the predictable work of clearing rubble with the risk of searching for a suitable enemy and winning the drop.
Mould-finding checklist
- Search both tunnel floors and wall-side debris; do not inspect only containers.
- Break wardrobe shafts and rubble piles because they have separate reported chances.
- Keep the Mould in your inventory until the Black Forge cast is complete.
- Do not assume a failed first clear means the dungeon is bugged; the item is not guaranteed.
Step 2: Reach the Gates of Mörkhalla
The entrance is raised high on a Mörkhalla tower. A Grappling Hook is required to reach it, so obtain one before making the trip with your forging materials. The hook is a traversal requirement, not an ingredient in the key recipe.
Prepare the approach
- Carry the Grappling Hook in an accessible inventory slot before you climb.
- Locate the tower and identify the elevated entrance rather than searching at ground level for a conventional doorway.
- Use the hook to gain the height needed to stand at the gate.
If you can see the tower but cannot interact with the entrance, check your position first: the gate is not placed at the base. A missing Grappling Hook is the expected reason you cannot complete the approach.
Step 3: Produce five Bloodgold Ingots
Bloodgold is the metal portion of the recipe. You need five Bloodgold Ingots, and each is smelted from Petrified Tissue. The tissue is taken from petrified Gammeltrolls, so this stage requires a separate Deep North resource run.

From Petrified Tissue to ingots
- Collect Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls.
- Use the appropriate smelting setup to turn the tissue into Bloodgold Ingots.
- Continue until you have five ingots, not merely five pieces of tissue.
Do not count raw Petrified Tissue as finished Bloodgold when checking the key recipe. The Black Forge accepts the ingot form. If the recipe remains unavailable, confirm that all five units are processed ingots and that the forge has reached level 4.
Step 4: Cast the Intricate Key at a level 4 Black Forge
Once you have one Mould and five Bloodgold Ingots, use a Black Forge upgraded to level 4. The result is Cast: Intricate Key; this is an intermediate item, not necessarily the object that opens the gate.
Black Forge requirements
- Black Forge upgrade level: 4.
- Mould: 1.
- Bloodgold Ingots: 5.
Crafting the cast consumes the listed ingredients. Keep the cast safe while you make the Liquid Frost, because the final step uses this specific intermediate item in a Frost Foundry.
If the cast recipe does not appear
- Check the station’s upgrade level; a lower-level Black Forge will not satisfy the stated requirement.
- Verify that you possess Bloodgold Ingots rather than unprocessed Petrified Tissue.
- Confirm that the Mould is in the same inventory used by the station.
- Look for a patch-related recipe change if your game version differs from the Deep North/Valheim 1.0 references.
Step 5: Make Liquid Frost and finish the key
Liquid Frost is produced from Ice in a Frigid Kiln. After converting enough Ice, bring five Liquid Frost and the Cast: Intricate Key to a Frost Foundry.

Convert Ice in the Frigid Kiln
- Place Ice into the Frigid Kiln.
- Run the conversion until you have five Liquid Frost.
- Keep the five finished units together with the cast before starting the final craft.
The available material does not state a separate Ice-to-Liquid-Frost ratio, so use the quantity displayed by your current Frigid Kiln rather than assuming a conversion amount from another version.
Finish at the Frost Foundry
- Open the Frost Foundry.
- Insert the Cast: Intricate Key.
- Add five Liquid Frost.
- Start the process and wait approximately 50 seconds.
- Collect the finished Intricate Key when the Foundry completes.
The roughly 50-second duration comes from game-guide snippets rather than an official developer timing. Place the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry close together if your base layout allows it; doing so reduces repeated trips while you move the cast and Liquid Frost.

Return to the elevated entrance with the finished Intricate Key and the Grappling Hook. Reach the gate with the hook, then use the key on the entrance interaction. A Mould or an unfinished cast is not the finished key and should not be expected to open the gate.
Why key consumption is uncertain
Available sources disagree on what happens after the first interaction:

| Reported rule | What it would mean | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| One finished key per entrance | You craft a key for each entrance you intend to open. | Listed by one guide snippet; patch context is not stated. |
| Three keys needed through progression | Multiple keys are consumed as you advance through Mörkhalla. | Reported by another source; exact gates are not specified. |
| Exterior key remains, inner gates consume keys | The first gate may leave the item in inventory, while later gates can use it up. | Reported by a separate source; not reconciled with the other accounts. |
| Entrance consumes one finished key | The outer interaction removes one usable key. | Also reported, but conflicts with the claim that it remains. |
Because these rules conflict, do not treat a single number as settled for every patch. Before crafting additional keys, check the current Valheim Wiki entry and patch-specific information, then watch your inventory after opening the exterior gate. If the game removes the key, plan another complete Mould–Bloodgold–Liquid Frost cycle for the next required gate.
Efficient preparation route
The following order minimizes backtracking while preserving the dependencies between stations and materials.
- Secure a Grappling Hook before traveling to the tower.
- Search the Winding Tunnels and defeat eligible Deep North enemies until you obtain one Mould.
- Collect Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls and smelt five Bloodgold Ingots.
- Upgrade a Black Forge to level 4, then cast the Intricate Key.
- Gather Ice and convert it to five Liquid Frost in a Frigid Kiln.
- Use the cast and Liquid Frost in a Frost Foundry; allow about 50 seconds for completion.
- Carry the finished key to the raised gate and use the Grappling Hook to reach it.
- Record whether the key remains in your inventory and consult current patch information before committing to further gates.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No Mould after clearing the tunnels | The drop is chance-based, not guaranteed. | Continue checking wardrobe shafts and rubble, or pursue Eyeless Ones and eligible Elakings. |
| The tower entrance cannot be reached | The gate is elevated. | Bring and equip a Grappling Hook; approach the raised entrance. |
| The Black Forge will not craft the cast | Forge level or ingredient form is wrong. | Use a level 4 Black Forge, five Bloodgold Ingots and one Mould. |
| The Frost Foundry rejects the recipe | You have the cast but not the finished Liquid Frost, or the quantity is wrong. | Convert Ice in a Frigid Kiln and supply five Liquid Frost. |
| The foundry appears idle | The process has not finished. | Allow approximately 50 seconds, then collect the result. |
| A key disappears after opening a gate | Some accounts report consumption at exterior or inner gates. | Verify the current patch rule before crafting the next one and budget another full set of materials if necessary. |
What is confirmed, and what to verify
The crafting chain is consistent across the available snippets: Mould, five Bloodgold Ingots, a level 4 Black Forge cast, and five Liquid Frost in a Frost Foundry. The Grappling Hook requirement for the raised entrance is also consistent. The uncertain points are the exact Mould drop rates in your patch, the Ice conversion ratio, the approximately 50-second processing time, and especially the number of keys consumed during Mörkhalla progression.
References in the available material point to Valheim 1.0 and Deep North content, but the current patch was not checked. Treat the in-game recipe and current wiki as authoritative if they differ from the figures here.
